Remembering those we have lost...

Ouch, it's really depressing looking at some of that quality stuff to have been killed off in the name of 'progress'. That scrappage scam was nothing short of criminal and the sheer wastefulness of it still boils my blood even now.

That's had that private plate taken off I reckon. Its a newer shape than a P plate so I expect its still alive.

If one of these cars gained a personal plate it would also cause the original registration to disappear from Cartell.

The scrappage scheme was a criminal waste and it is the gormless idiot politicians who instigated the scheme, such as Mandelson, who I blame rather than the dealers. Because of the scrappage scheme, Labour have lost themselves my vote, for ever.

I remember reading about the Bond in CCW at the time. That scrappage scheme was the worst thing ever to happen to the classic car scene. A lot of cars lost and for no real (in my opinion) purpose.

How did the scheme work? - Did dealers surrender V5's for the 1k payment?

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment - and please understand I agree with everything that has been said about the scrappage scheme so far - but I can't help but direct some of my ire to the car owners themselves. Let's be honest you would have to be a bit of a cock-nob to think trading in your MGB or Morris Minor for a down payment on a pov spec Atoz was a super-brilliant idea. I mean, it's not like government storm troopers crashed through their skylights in the middle of the night and frog marched them down to the Hyundai dealerships at gun point, did they?

I agree with LW. I would have thought if the owners of a very old car had decided it was getting on a bit then they would have chopped it in way back in 19-oatcake and not waited until 2010.

I would really like to know what their thought process was there.

I have a confession to make............

In September 2009 I did allow ( and sign as guarantor) the sacrifice of one classic* 3 cylinder Corsa shit heap with 2 weeks MOT and an engine that sounded like a Chrysler Alpine with no oil. With a value at the time of less than £200 to be used as £2000 deposit on a Fiat 500 1.2 Lounge. This seemed ( and still does) like sound economic sense. The payments on the Fiat are about £150 a month and it's still here, although a different daughter is paying for and driving it now- it'll be paid for in September and should have some value if we decide to get rid, but I see it hanging around for a few years.

I get the finance slave thing, but knowing my daughters ,the money paid on the Fiat would have gone on clothes, shoes, festival tickets etc so at least there's something tangible to show for the money- even if it's Italian!

The reason the scrappage seem took so many cars was down to the marketing of it. Every dealer had adverts splashed all over the interweb and news papers promoting it, which sews the seed in peoples minds who may normally have just kept a hold of the car.

 Polish! ;-)

Using a mark 1 Corsa in the scrappage scheme seems reasonable to me. :) Glad it wasn't a Chevette!
