Volvo 340 1.7GL

Nostalgia. My first car was an '84 1.4 3 door in beige, one previous giffer owner and not even a wireless fitted. I liked it. Never did any OMGDRIFTIN but that was probably down to the 360GLT alloys and sticky Pirellis I subsequently fitted.

I can still hear the incessant ticking of the seatbelt warning light even now.

Two of my favourite things about the car are the way the bonnet opens and the spare wheel rail

Also the amount of space is bound to make doing any job on the engine a doddle

My old boss' s dad had one of those many many moons ago E666 tsd from memory. I hated them when they were new. However i saw the booted one on evil bay and kinda liked it!. Not sure if i would buy one though. Bickets sold them by the car transport load, and usualy to the blue rinse over 60 brigade! I s your one an x Bickets car perchance?

I'm unsure about that one, I'll have a look at the details/history book when I'm next at the place its stored, I think it's been up here its whole life though.

I'm not sure why so many people don't like them or wouldn't own one, but that's perhaps because I'm too young to remember them!

I'd love an early one with the coffin type seats. I've got a brochure for the 76 model year, it's ace. Also got one if those mega wonky Stahlberg plastic models if a blue rinse coloured 343gl.

They're probably my favourite Volvo, maybe I'll own one in the future. Now I'll just have to make do with my 240. Do you think if I stuck some volvo badges on the 18 anyone would be fooled?

Posted

See I'd love a 240 but I don't think I could afford to drive it very often, the renault engine makes this slightly less thirsty, if a little less reliable.

Just need to get the finger out and fix it up.

I ruined a 360 GLS 3dr in some eyes. Fitted a 940 Turbo motor and the other usual stuff. Glued up the diff and had a weld-in cage fabricated.

I enjoyed it.

It's now a BDC drift car, after I sold the shell on.

OP, yours looks crispy! I have an OMG NOS gen front panel for one (mk3) if you need it.

You can't beat a nice Daf 77!

I drool after a Variomatic one

bonnet opening this way is a Daf design, other volvos of the time didn;t have it

And the same applies to the spare wheel rail... There's quite a bit of DAF 66 in those beauties !

My uncle had a couple of them during the 90's, one was a burgundy B reg 1.4 DL and when that died he bought a white H reg 1.4 DL, both of them proved to be very reliable runners doing monster mileages traveling from Colchester to Harlow everyday.

He only scrapped the H reg as the radiator was leaking and the car was worthless, he replaced that with a L reg 440 1.7 but that wasn't anywhere near as reliable as the 340's.

A bit off topic I suppose but has anyone fitted a Gordini engine and Volvo 340 box to a Daf/Volvo 66?

I had a Gordini tuned Daf 55 Marathon..

an absolute hoot of a car to drive - totally loved it

I think it was a 1.4 the Marathon had a rude boy exhaust and a webasto sunroof.

Think a 1.6 Renner Kangoo engine fits straight onto a vairo trans. Not sure about Dafs, but it certainly fits in a 340 bay.

The 55 I had didn't have the 2 belt system, it had a single belt system which was the same as the one that went in the 77/340. The 340 was originally designed as a variomatic car, the manual gearbox was a later addition by Volvo.

Converting a car from Variomatic to Manual would be uneconomical as the whole drive train would have to be replaced. variomatic systems are both front and rear based and take up a lot of room. You would need new prop shafts, gear box, diff and axels

the Vario system in the later Dafs could cope with more revs - it is the early one in the dafodil, the 33 and the 44 that struggles with power.

if you have never had a variomatic car before you need to have a go - they are a total hoot, CVT, the modern variation not only sounds crap compared to variomatic but is boring in comparison.

3 cheers for Huub van Doorne!

The 16v 2.0 F7R from a clio williams/megane (clio preferred due to having dizzy) is the one to go for.

The block is fundamentally the same and uses the same mounts, and probably what will be going in mine eventually.

The only issue with 340s is the propshaft, its shit.

Also overrun, I'll get back to you on that one, not sure what condish mine is in

740 turbit motor in one sounds amazeballs. Imagine how many arses you could put in a plate and serve up to unsuspecting tailgaters.

I so want a CVT when I grow up. I do think it's the gearbox (okay not really descriptive of it really) of the FUTURE!

Of course, it wasn't just DAF and Volvo playing with CVT either. Ever heard of Torotrak? Well they're one of the main players in the commercial CVT market. They started as an offshoot of Leyland and their first CVT development was in this:

I would like to try a cvt too. There are issues doing brake tests during mots with them huh?

I don't know about modern chain driven cvts. But the original system as invented by van Doorne, and found on dafs and volvos, the variomatic system must never be put on a rolling road. The system relies on surface friction to set the belts, if you put a variomatic car on a rolling road it will destroy the transmission. Many dafs were killed by ignorant testers. The brakes must be road tested. I had a laminated warning I used to leave on the dash for the tester and I would get the tester to sign a letter stating that it would not be put on a rolling road and if it was, they were paying for the damage.
