F-word wonderful waftbarge lives!

Good stuff!

I had a 1982 Granada 2 litre with 4 speed manual when not long after University, but it was pretty underwhelming to drive in terms of acceleration.

But the inside was comfortable, even with the rough cloth seats.  One of the few cars that gave plenty of legroom, it's only that and my Porsche 924 where I couldn't have the seat all the way back

Entirely btw, this is my 15th (fifteenth) MKII. Here are some of my previous ones, if anyone cares.

Bergheim reg. LOL

Rarer than a 2.8injection may only be the 2.8i S, only seen 1 example ever on the TC in 2012.

You mean overtaking was risky?

Yep, I had them registered via a friend who lived in Frechen, since the road tax for a 2.8 litre was prohibitively expensive in Belgium.

I believe the Aston Martin built ones are the rarest of the bunch. I have only seen two of them EVAH.

Right.

We replaced the fuel pump, had it running again, but it is still missing slightly.

So next is takage apart of the fuel separator/metering device for cleanage.

What's hard to believe is that the underside of the car is in museum condition!

Save for a hole in the spare wheel recess, there is not a trace of rust underneath!

Posted

Wow, what a result! Have to say I didn't expect that what with it living in a muddy puddle! From the sounds of things the cars had only been turfed out of their storage recently though. Hope the running issue get sorted easily.

Ah, it'll be fine.

The cars have lived in the mud puddle for quite some time, judging from the condition of the chrome and all those little rust spots all over the bodywork. This is a bit of a headache, since good replacement bumpers for Ghias are very hard to come by.

Anyway, I just changed the terminals of the battery leads, since you can't get ye olde screw-in type Ford Batteries anymore.

Ah, it'll be fine.

That's the mantra I live my life by.

Where it is now I could only make some ebaymong type pics.

I'll make up for it when the car can be moved.

What is this Aston Martin built variant of which you speak? I know Tickford was involved with that horribly ugly Turbo Capri, and also summat with the Orion 1600E, but was not aware of any Granny tinkering.

Yes, please spill the beans....I have a hole in my Granada awareness plane now

About 30 of them were built for the motor pool of Balmoral Castle, one of the commercial companies of the Royal Family, where people can rent cottages, meeting rooms, etc. They were used as transport for corporate events.

They all were MKII facelift 2.8i estates.

Ford delivered them unpainted and without interiors to Aston Martin, where they were finished in dark green with handpainted golden coach stripes, and trimmed with cream Connolly and burled walnut. After the usual company amortisation period, they were unceremoniously sold on to private owners. I have no idea how many survive, but I have seen two of them so far. One at the Granada nationals at Billings, one at a mad Granada collector's near Hannover.

Looks like an ex-Junkman Grandad is still around-ish:

The vehicle details for A333 WGH are:

Date of Liability 01 08 2012

Date of First Registration 12 04 1984

Year of Manufacture 1984

Cylinder Capacity (cc)2792cc

Vehicle Status Unlicensed

What this story fails to tell is that the car has some reasonably interesting history.

It started life as an unmarked car with the Metropolitan Police.

I found this out when I discovered the business card of a police officer behind a door panel and tried to track him down. It turned out that the chap had meanwhile moved on to be the chief of police in Edinburgh. When I gave him a call there, he could clearly remember the number plate, filled me in with the details in regards to the reading light the article mentions, and screwholes underneath the dash where the police radio was fitted, and was noticeably delighted that "da good ole lass is still kicking aboot".

I can only hope that 'Unlicensed' is DVLA speak for 'currently undergoing restoration'.

Sorry, no pointless semi-interesting story about the car known to me.

Ford delivered them unpainted and without interiors to Prince Phillip, where they were finished in Fiat Ermine White, and trimmed with an eBay Sparco bucket seat and Reinforced I beam. After the usual company amortisation period, they were unceremoniously sold on to private owners. I have no idea how many survive, but I have seen two of them so far. One at the Granada nationals at Billings, one under a tarp in Paris after it was mysteriously exported there in 1997 and unused since.

Right. What started as a little garage session turned into an all-nighter.

Tried to get it running properly, but it's time to admit defeat.

It turns out that it needs a metering head/fuel distributor, or at least a seal kit for it.

Can anyone out there help by any chance?

I'll confess. Lack of money aside, the one reason I didn't take this on myself is that I knew it was quite likely something would be tired in the fuel injection side of things, and I knew I know very little about how they work. Good luck in your search - presumably it isn't a part specific to the Granada?

K-Jetronic is hardly more sophisticated than a hayfork, but it's a nightmare to get parts for it now.

It"s not specific to the Granada, no. All 2.8i Cologne have the same, so does 2.8 Ovlov, 280E and 911 2.7.

I've used these to get the K-Jet metering heads on Audis rebuilt in the past, not cheap but they might sell you the seal kit for a DIY.

That's great, many thanks for that!

I also found http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261375409928 and http://www.atpelectronics.co.uk/pages/mechanical-injection.html

Betweenm those three something should emerge I would think.

So.

A remanufactured fuel metering head is on its way from France, of all places, and a complete exhaust system from Germany, because even including postage, it only costs half of what it costs in the UK.

I'm now looking for a decent set of bumpers, so if any of you have a set knocking about, or are friendly with the banger racing community, I'd appreciate any help in this matter.

Note: if the racers need bumpers for racing, they can have mine. Apart from pitted chrome, they are OK.

Banger racers? Why not get Vulgalour to ask the bloke in Altrincham with the Princess, it might show something up locally...

Great save Junkman - always loved the MK2 Granada. My dad had a black 2.3 LX (A625 VVW) with a hella fog light front grill, that was in 1989! I have a photo of us standing with it at Colchester Zoo in circa 1989/90. A lovely car.
