MGF in Devonland

Got the chace to buy a tidy and very cheap MGF located in Devonland. I live in the hateful capital city.

I can buy the car with a mate who is also into MGF's. He tried to get a trailer but the owner flipped it a couple of weeks ago. I was going to tow it with the Amazon as that has a great towbar set up.  Another mate has trade plates but has become paranoid about other people using them.

I know that there is the 'book it into a local MOT place and just drive it' thing but has anyone actually done that without being killed at the roadside by VOSA and/or the filth?

The car is not MOT'd or taxed and failed on emissions. It is a lovely car as the owner has lavished much love upon it and we are hoping to get it road worthy and flog with the proceeds going to a cancer charity which is close to my mate's heart.

I used to have an A frame but got rid of it a few years ago (yes, I am stupid), I don't know anyone locally who has one either.

Am a bit screwed as to what to do for the best/worst.

I don't even know anyone with a red MGF that I could clone plates from (not that I would ever do that*).

Any ideas/advice/help? Otherwise am going to have to pass on it which would be a major arse product.

I guess it probably is but the thing is I know no-one who has actually done it. Especially from Devon to London.

I guess I probably couldn't even call out my breakdown people (grass coloured flappy thing that gets raised on a pole).

as long as its not unsafe you should be fine - or book it in in Devon?

Get it insured a week before (so the MID update should show it up on ANPR) pre-book the MOT and drive it back. If you get pulled show them thjis thread, it's on the internet after all, so you cannot possibly fail to win any argument with the police or VOSA.

Arse, it's in Dorset, not Devon. Never post anything when you've had fishfingers, Baileys and Co-codamol because it turns you into a tree-hugging butt monkey who can't tell the difference between Devon and Dorset.

Soz folks. It's Ferndown in Dorset. Dorset isn't Devon and I'm an idiot.

Dorest is a million light years from Devon as the crow drives unfortunately so I won't be of much use.  Best of luck!

On the map it's about an inch above Bournemouth.

Which indeed is about a million light years from Devon. It would need to be a very hardy crow and have lots of endurance.

I'm still an idiot regarding geography.

Have put an ad on Shipley so lets see what happens there. I hope Shipley person knows where Dorset is. Wish I did.

Dorset is nearer to London, so less distance to drive back to the MOT station

I'll deliver it for fifty quid. However, if I get pulled by the rozzers I'll bung it into the Armco and leg it across the fields like I'm on Police Interceptors.

^^ That would be worth paying £50 for anyway.

Yes, it is nearer but it's still scary.

Where exactly in Ferndown?  I know it well, and have quite a few mates (or they might not be, if it involves shenanigans!) in the close proximity -

Industrial Estate is just off the A348,  the evil "by-pass" skirts that from Canford Bottom roundabout; AVOID that at all costs.... (Trickett's Cross is up tother end, towards Ringwood and the A31, ideal for escape to M3, but a no go area after dark).

I looked at a really tidy 03 silver MGF in Bmth earlier this year, took it for a spin with a humungous lady seller crushed into the passenger seat - couldn't fault it at all, but lost my nerve after offering her 1200, which was WAY below her asking price, after hearing about how you change the plugs !!

Good to see that your fleet reduction plan is going as well as mine, Ken

The 'pre-booked MoT' thing is legal, but I'm not sure I would bother as I really wouldn't want any hassle with ANPR-generated tickets and such rubbish.

I would probably have the thing transported, but it wouldn't make financial sense if you just intend to fix her up and sell her on.

Were there any MoT failures apart from the emissions ? Would it make sense to do a heroic lambda sensor swap on the roadside and take it for a test more locally ?

This dangerous practice has been reported to the traffic wombles.

Watch your letterbox.

Yes. Just like these show plate websites that allow you to actually, factually fully clone a car.

Sickening crimes that should be severely punished.

Taking a vehicle on the public highway without a government issued certificate of safety, following a very stringent test, is akin to firing a loaded gun into a crowd.

I think you missed a few asterisks there...

I really hope your tongue is so far into your cheek you're chewing your tonsils ;)

I can imagine HATOs having nothing better to do, but legally you can book an MoT and drive a car to it. Whether a police officer could order the car off the road for being in a dangerous condition is another matter, but emissions? I just checked and it wasn't the biggest Nunkitten killer of last year.

Cloning cars is silly. We're on Autoshite - why would we want to have two terminally decrepit old bangers? Cloning animals is better as that means more meat for my belly.

I've done the "just going for an MOT" journey many time even from Dorset (PUG 205) BUT only in decent clean looking chod.  Get the V5 signed, get a copy of the Insurance (last time used a short term 3 day insurance) book an MOT or two  via interweb for your destination Halfrauds  ALLHALFRAUDSARSHITE and print it off. Check that your chosen vehicle breakdown service will waft to your aid when you fill it with 4star diesel. Photo montage of collection saga for extra points.

I'd never clone a car reg 'cos that would be just kitten killing wrong!

Yes, I seem to be fatally unable to understand the concept of fleet reduction in any way shape or form.

The silver MG wento some friends of a friend and I made a tidy profit which was nice and to be fair they got a good car. With this I bought a fleabay MGF in BRG uber cheap and a Daf 66 estate. I am damned.

This one has no other faults apart from being unable to get the emissions sorted. It is a stunning car. Just puzzling as to how to get it without any nuns or kittens being killed.

Man up & drive it home, where's your sense of adventure?? ;-)

I know, I know. I'm getting old and seemingly fairly socially responsible. It really irritates me and I have the rash to prove. 10 year ago the bloody thing would already be here. Fugging ANPR. Plus Mrs PBK would kill me if Plod got involved.

So, any kind soul living not a squillion miles away from Norf London got a trailer or a front wheels off the floor towing dolly that they could let me use for some beer tokens? This MG must not escape my clutches.
