I CAN HAZ WANKER

Nice buy Wuv, hopefully it outlasts the last car you got off ebay.

Mrs P bought one on tick a while ago when I was away for the weekend..  It was the 192 in black with the fancy leather chairs.  Striking appearance but hardly bonny. I really liked the suicide rear doors. Struggled to get 20 mpg and used almost as much oil as petrol. Like Wuv says, it didn't feel particularly fast or special and it needed caning to get a turn of speed on.  I'm glad she had it though, as, like most of us probably feel, it is something of an enigma and it satisfied a curiosity.

She got rid sharpish when a dealer told her that he wouldn't part ex at any price ...

Hope it gives good service  :-)

There are two at work gradually building their own oil storage depot on the floor where they park. 8)

You really are humourless John.

Eh? You make some highly critical comment about exactly the car I own, and I should find it funny??

Try again.

I think it already did!

We'll bought wuvvum I've been dying these up for a bit but nothing this bargainous has come up. The 192 one was the one everyone rated back in the day as I was torquer than the more powerful one. I read the hot start issue is a compression issue and it can be helped by fitting a faster starter from a later car. Yours looks quite late so may have it anyway.

it was funny. This is autoshite, if you are gonna get upset about a mild remark like that you're doing it all wrong. Calibras are fucking shite. Merry Xmas!

Good choice, that's certainly a car with 'character'. You are clearly a wankeler of distinction.

I think this may answer the question "what is the newest model of car that we all agree is definitely Autoshite".

For £500 though, if it lasts 5 months its still full of win. Who cares. I want one now.

How much are the rebuilds on these when they do go wrong?

2 grand for a rebuild. You can get the rebuild kits for about 600 quid.

Superb! I hadnt reallised you could pick one up for so little! Seems like yesterday they were being ragged about in the motoring weeklies etc.

I think id suffer from rotor anxiety but my loss when they drive like they do. Whats the redline set at ?

I've defo got the hots for one. The going rate for an un knackered one seems to be about a grand so wuvvum got a right barg'

600 for a rebuild kit eh. That doesn't sound like much. OK you've gotta get the engine out and take it to pieces but I'm sure that can't be that hard. I wonder what the chances are of a rebuild kit actually turning a dead one into a usable one, or is it one of these things where you get it to bits and find that all the key castings that make up the engine are fucked beyond repair.

That doesn't included the rotor. I imagine all of the below just springs out the engine when you undo the crank cover.

it looks like this

These guys will do a basic rebuild for 950 if you take the motor out yourself. The hot start issue can be offset by that high powered starter motor so I recon you could nurse one along for a bit before forking out. Either that or fit an endendor diesel from a Sierra or a 1600 x-flow

Is it the case that basically you remove and dismantle the entire engine, meaning replacing every gasket in the damn tbing, in order to replace 6 2-inch metal strips on the rotor tips? That's all you're replacing to turn the engine from a dead duck into a goer?

It does seem to be the rotor tips that are the primary cause of failure to proceed on these.  That being the case, I reckon about 80% of that rebuild kit could be replaced by a tube of Hylomar.

I had a Rx7 (the bloated Porsche shape) that i bought as a non runner and once i had got the engine out, which was a mare and split it open i found the chambers were scored  and a rotor tip had broke and damaged an exhaust port so it needed more than just a kit.

I was going to scrap it but found an engine online for £450 that bolted in a lot easier than the one i took out as it was all complete with its wiring loom that just passed through a big gromit on the bulkhead and plugged into the ecu under the passenger side foot well.

It had a janspeed exhaust system that would spit flames out on the over run if provoked and it really drank fuel,i never got it running properly and it was a bitch to hot start.

Its gearbox front bearing colapsed on the way back from the Enfield Pageant of Motoring coating the clutch in oil so i fixed that

Then i crashed it into a jeep because the brakes were woeful and i hoped it would be writen off but no it got its nose replaced, then i sold to a lad who worked with me and he had it stolen off his drive.

I'd buy that kit just for the cock shaped one with the baggy foreskin, bottom left.

The poor hot starting is usually the first sign of trouble, it's caused by a lack of compression which means the rotor tips are on the way out.

I wonder if they ever get sold with the engine rebuilt and healthy?  I've only ever seen them in 2 conditions - already fucked or about to be fucked.

I think if your keen enough to pay for the engine rebuild you'll not sell it. There was one for sale recently on eBay for 1500 with a recent rebuilt motor.
