Diabolique: Damian the Renault Cinq

Today I had the pleasure of meeting Panhard65 of this parish, who kindly signed his latest Ebay win over to the Livered fleet.

It's a rattly old thing. The speedo doesn't work. The driveshaft goes knock knock like it's about to tell you a very bad joke indeed. It frequently requires a good shove to get it into gear, particularly second, whereupon the lever tends to come off in your hand. Lots of bits of the dashboard are broken off. The drivers window is open about a crack, and stuck like that, and there's no door card on that door. The fuel cap has been drilled out.

Yet it is a characterful old thing, which didn't miss a beat on the way back from collecting it, which has nine months MoT and six months rent in the window. I quite like it already. I'm hoping that as it's a nimble little front wheel drive thing with skinny tyres that doesn't weigh much, it will be a good winter runaround. Then in the summer I'll either move it on or keep it and fix it up, depending on how well I bond with it in the meantime.

Have a miserable "Lidl car park in the drizzle" picture :)

You don't find colours like that any more. I have fond memories of a mate's D reg TL when we first started driving as sixth formers in the mid 90s. The gear knobs in these things are massive for some reason.

A Renner Cinq is the only car that has ever left me stranded...on the A9 at 2am. Seized solid. Hate 'em for that reason only.

Nice, decent wee cars these, didn't they carry on making them till the mid 90s? I know they were on sale for a few years alongside the Clio.

I love these, I'm always scanning the bay for cheapy ones. I reckon they are the sort of car where you can delight in the simple mechanics, light weight and lovely French suspension even on the shittiest journeys like driving to Asda in stoke to buy cat food. I'd love to scoop one up. Gotta be the 'campus' too.

They did, yeah. Called it the Campus and aimed it at students. Base spec.

(Or rather, students with rich parents. When I was at uni the car park was inhabited by Mk1 Fiestas with shonky MoTs)

They did the same with the Clio at one stage, when the new model came out they arse-lifted the old one and put a campus badge on it for a while. Probably over-ordered bodyshells or summat.
