What Shite Diesel

Recommended Posts

So, the folks are moving down to deepest Devon and this brings the possibility of cheap holidays and also what with still being the closet offspring the debatable pleasure of racking up the miles when they can no longer wipe their own arses and whatnot.

It also offers (as if one was needed) the opportunity to purchase yet another shit car because what with gas guzzling 4 wheel stock we currently have what we really need is a cheap diesel.

Ideally it would be;

A. Cheap or even better free

B. Capable of running on oils other than pump derv

C. Shite

I quite fancied the Corsa B 11/2 litre turd blower as these have the added benefit of cheap tax though if could well be argued they are missing the e from the end of shite.

Peugeots are an obvious choice and I had a lovely NA 309 last year that with the benefit of hindsight I should of kept, had a 405 TD estate as well come to think of it. I do like a 205 though they have the crash protection of a soggy paper plane which is not ideal for a car which I would hope to one day become mums taxi as well as the long hall beater. Not much better in the smash stakes though I've never had one before is the 106, loads of cheap ones about but like the Corsa probably a tad small for 4.

One long forgotten plan is grabbing up a Sierra aga and just running that or possibly dieaseling up the Cortina as a long term project come daily runner. I like this idea lots as the tina needs to get used and using it on the regular again would mean I could get something older and more interesting as a fun car. The issue seems to be that Sierra D's don't seem that plentiful but I'm keeping them peeled.

This old Rover also looks ideal* a fair bit out of my price range mind, especially since I just had to forsake the pack of baccy so I could get my beers to clear on me bank card!

A fair few other often completely random choices have made the watch list and my choice is most often made by what comes up once I have a few notes in my hand though I'd be interested to know what you learned chaps and chapettes would go for to lap up the mileage for pennies.

There's a few lads that done diesel conversions on BSC.

If your struggling to find a sierra for bummage how about an LDV pilot? (pug XUD motor and rover box)

Alternatively the only diesel car i've owned was a '92 mk3 astra 1.7d (n/a) which was mega on fuel, 50+mpg, and wasn't that bad speed wise as long as you kept it wound up.

Corsa 1.5TD with the Isuzu engine if you can find one ... crank up the boost for lots of black smoke.

Do you really need a diesel though? Didn't DW say he was getting 50mpg from his little pez Daihatsu.

The old na diesels like you find in the Astra just plod in for ever but they're pretty grim to drive. My mate did 100,000 miles in one over 5 years and other than servicing and him occasionally crashing it into stuff nothing went wrong with it and it;d just plod along doing like 60mpg.

Good shout Shiterider, I didn't give much thought to the other possibilities with the tina. I need to check out Buy Sell Cortina, not been on there in yonks.

The Isuzu Corsa B has been the favorite for a good while now. Something small and disposable has it's benefits and the reality of cash flows kind of means doing this or following through with the Cortina conversion.

It's the other fuels aspect of derv ownership that I miss, hence the yearning for another aga.

Maybe getting a bit pricey now but a Mercedes 190d might be worth considering, think they are veg friendly the 2.0 in particular is very frugal and you can still tell anyone prepared to listen that you drive a Merc.

Bortaf would be the one ask about cortina conversions, he's done a few. from memory i think the last was an 1800 sierra motor in a mk3 GXL.

There's a BX Turdblo Diseasel for sale on this very forum. Sorted.

I've clearly missed that one, do tell...

Pa had a NA Astra, it was horrid though most of that was down to the metallic light green/blue paint it had.

Why not go one step further than the Corsa and find yourself a Nova 1.5TD, supposed to be pretty quick and reliable.

What you really want is a Citroen ZX TD. A white hatchback example for example. If only we knew someone selling one. A white hatchback one, for example. That runs on veg oil.

Mercs have been looked at though the 3 box itch is ticked and IMHO better played by the Cortina.

Yes, Bortaf is one knowledgeably dude when it comes to Cortina's, fairly local too. I'll have to hook him up and pick his brains.

His Astra was a flat burgundy merit and generally hateful. I wonder what bhp it had.

I like BX's but I wouldnt want one as a daily. I know they're well loved on here but that suspension just adds an extra level of compexity on an old car that just caused bother that you don't want if you just want to turn the key and go.

Maybe I'm just scunnered by them as I had a GT and my mate had a GTi around the same time and they both shat out their LHM and tried to kill us at about the same time?

Posted

I agree with the ZX, that sounds about perfect. It's like the BX without the LHM shiting out all over the place. Pity there's no one selling one right now. Oh well.

Forgot they did them TBH!

We had a 1.5 diesel corsa for a while. Horrible thing with no power steering.

Sounds Ideal.

Thought you had found a home for this, got one in the watch list as it happens so could be a goer.

306 ticks the box in many ways but doesn't flick my switches, zx looks like a shiter car in a more pleasing way. What sort of finance deals does Cavcraft offer?

May I highly recommend my winter car of last year, the mark one Clio 1.9d

It's one of those that just loves to be abused, will take all the shit you can possibly throw at it and has a fuel gauge that defies gravity.

It's the only one of my cars that was completely unphased by any amount of snow, and leaky sunroof and shit heater aside, I miss it!

:-D  I do hope you own a sheepskin coat and a flat cap, you'll have much more credibility.  I assume you perform a 114 point check on every car and offer a competitive finance package?

Swap ZX for leaky portacabin and bunting?

Posted

I'm going to visit one night and put a load of fluttery bunting up and park a shonky Portakabin* on that bit of land.

Other jack leg cabins are available cos PORTAKABIN are as fucking ruthless as DisneyPixar over people using their name.

This phase 1 405 1.9D looks utter class.

Great cars, good to try something I've not had before though, even it turns out to be crap it's always a good experience one way or another.

They really have aged well, they don't look dated at all considering the design is 25 years old.
