An album of old photos

Recommended Posts

I've spent an hour or two turning old pics into electric form with the scanner and thought I'd pop some of the car related ones on here. If, unlike me, you don't like looking at someone else's old photos, hit the back button now.

In rough chronological order-

1969 the year I was born

This was my Canadian uncle's hire car when they visited in 1970.

Land rovers have been in the family longer than me. My wee sister getting in the way here. She was 40 two weeks ago.

The 80s

Needless to say I learnt to drive in a land rover but also unimogs...

...and pinzgauers...

...and the Birkie Beast. I think it's Tayne who has a pic on his spotted thread. It was built by a mate of my old man's and this pic was taken just after he finished it in the mid eighties.

This unimog rolled while on the hill. My brother was the front passenger and I was in the back along with a dozen fellow grouse beaters.

My first car was a mk 2 escort bought at auction for £375. In '89 I found myself 500 miles from home working in Reading. The escort made that 500 mile journey a few times.

The 90s

The money I made working dahn saaf allowed the luxury of a x reg 1.1 polo

Then I got this 1.2 two door Astra estate

Ace! I remember rocking that chubby-knees-and-sandals look back in the day.

The threat of divorce finally persuaded me it wasn't a good one.

Donegal Close, Caversham. I lodged with an old widow called Cynthia and that pic was taken from my bedroom window. It's the only pic of that escort I can find.

The driver broke his toe (bizarrely) and the broken end of one of the canvas hoops stabbed the guy beside me in the forehead but it just needed a stitch or two. It was pulled back onto its wheels and it drove off the hill with us in it. Having been upside down, every slight movement off the level had us grabbing on and shitting ourselves. I don't know where it is now but the double cab one still exists (I know where it is and I want it).

Thanks for posting. I love these period type pics. The colours and the fact that they always tell a story.

Fantastic effort mate. Great days; the Merc and the Escort van are sweet. Also, the Glenshee car-park is exactly hoe I remember it.

A successful outing with the rod and worm.

ID the car. You've got three minutes or I declare this site to be NWIUTB and I burn my computer.

My brother and I had a Yamaha DT 250 too at the time. It was a smokey 'stroker (and it brought out the Steve McQueen)

Seeing that pissed on meds thread reminded me that I had uploaded some old pics here a couple of years ago.

It would be good to see shiters old photos too, so why don't we copy the idea?

What shall we say - pics taken pre 2000? Must be your own and Include a line about the pic if you can.

I'll look out some of my dad's cars.

I don't want to derail the thread, but can anybody recommend a good way to digitise photos without spending £££? I gave up on my cheap scanner years ago and tend to use my camera these days, but it's a bit of a faff.

Here's my contribution for now, you can see why I sacked off the scanner.

Viva88l.jpg

Taken in 1988. I am trying to fit an engine to the green Viva from the blue one. The guy with the axe (because I didn't own a hammer) lifted the engine in place, everybody else was just getting in the way. I had about two hours before I had to set off to work- I had to give up and borrow my mum's car.

Here's another one I did earlier. Top tip- if a fireman asks to check your flat because downstairs has had a chimney fire, it's best to let him in.

Apologies for cross post, I felt it was suitable for this thread too.

Not wanting to open the flood gates here but I have access to a Kodak i3400 which scans pics beutifully, I have done those small business card size pictures from the 1930's and printed them A3 and they come out quite nice, I can burn to DVD. If you want to try you can send recorded delivery and I will return recorded. Not taking resposiblity for lost in post though!
