Insurance for New Drivers.

My friends son has just passed his test, and now is itching to get on the road. Insurance is proving a problem however - no surprises there to be honest!

She's had a quote to add him on her insurance for a '52 Honda Jizz, and the cheapest came in at £6197.53!!!!!!

So options are to get him a car of his own, I'd assume something like a 1.0 Corsa/Ka etc would be cheapest to insure?

Anyone got any experience or advice?

Just the usual, look for car that is low ins grp & shop around.

From memory old style Fiat Panda's and 850cc Daihatsu/Pertodua's were grp1.

A lad on the local news (this is Norfolk after all) paid about £45 a year for his tractor insurance on a 1950s Fordson. Not sure he was fighting the honeys off with a manure covered stick however.

I've just insured my 18 year old daughter on her own policy, fully comp on a 1999 Golf 1.4 16v for just under 900 quid a year- has got the telemetric box thingy on it though.. couldn't believe it was cheaper to insure than a Cinquecento.

Yeah insurance in Leeds is always bad though (assuming they are in Leeds).

Not sure how accurate this is:

http://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-ratings.php

They are listed on a scale A-F.
A = Good Post code/Low Risk
F = Bad Post code/High Risk
* = Motorbikes need to be locked in a secure garage

LS Leeds
1-13, 15-16, 19, 26-27 . . . . . . . . F *
14, 18, 28 . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . E *
17, 21-23 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . C
20, 25 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . D *
24 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A
29 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . B

So unless they live in Tadcaster, Shadwell or Ilkley (2 of which are strictly not Leeds) you are considered a bad insurance risk by just owning a car.

Do you have any relatives in a low insurance area? Get him to "live" there as far as insurance is concerned.............

what about a new car with free insurance? some aren't available for under 21s but it could work out cheaper than spending a couple grand on one years insurance

I was pissing about wth quotes the other week, and I noticed in my case (18 and in full time education, license held for <a month, living on edge of Manchester) that it was often cheaper to get my own insurance than get added to someone else's.

The only things I could get remotely cheap quotes on were things like an F reg, automatic, 998cc Mini - it was something like £1950/year, £500 excess.

Will be watching this thread with interest.

Still two grand though Ghosty. I never realised it was as bad as that.

Shit. I've got a 16 year old daughter. Better start saving.

Cheapest my lad got was £2,000 on a 1.0 Corsa with InsureTheBox, who fit one of those black box things.
