The hilux pickups are dear thanks to top gear. There's a Nissan d10 for sale locally but it's got no mot and doesn't look like it'll get one without a battle. "Ideal 4 export"

I used to justify 4wd for winter, arguably the worst in the snow I had as the Subaru SVX, but that did have semi-slick track tyres on it

I got mine for £650, the cheapest I can find at present is £1500 though.

In the silly, large, heavy, 4wd JDM category Mitsubishi 3000GT/GTO are also quite cheap - bit of a chavvy image, but I still would, as long as it wasn't red.

There's not really any justification for it to be fair, I've managed to drive anywhere I need to go the last couple of years in a rwd Merc. I just fancy one.

My trade policy has exclusions for certain Subaru's else I'd quite like a Forester Turbo.

There's always the estate versions of the evo & skyline ..

Mitsubishi Legnum, I think Pete-M has one, which has been refereed to as "happy death express" or similar.

Nissan Stagea - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nissan-Stagea-RS-Four-Non-Turbo-2-5i-Auto-/380746529063?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item58a642f927

If I could have any 4wd (and find one) I'd be after one of the late 80's, early 90's hatchback Mitsubishi Galant VR4

Can't seem to post the link up but there is a Vauxhall Monterey for sale near me, a quick search of evilbay should find it;

Those UMMs are nifty in the muck, but hardly pleasing to the eye....which makes them even better, of course.

gotta be a musso with the 2.3 merc engine

gr9 for filling with water :(

utterly shite (not in a good way)

UMMs are ace bits of kit, Peugeot diesel motor, built like a tank

Great to piss off pub bores too..

"What you driving now?"

"Umm...."

"What, don't you know?"

"Yes, it's an....Umm..."

No. My previous Frontera experience wasn't a good one.

This I can agree with. The one I (briefly) had attempted to turn itself over on the M4 after the propshaft UJ went, never felt fear like that before

Never again.

I'd love one of those transit County's. Not sure my wife or neighbours would agree.

Land Rover 101.

Under a grand - No chance

20 MPG - Are you having a fucking laugh? Move the decimal place 2 to the left. 0.2 MPG is probably fair.

Taking stuff to the tip - It would be cheaper to post it to the tip with the comical MPG you will get.

Dragging stuff from the scrapyard - You will probably need something to drag this back each time it gets hiab'd.

My mate put this one into storage about 8 years ago and then promptly never paid the farmer for keeping it in a barn it so its been left in a field for several years. Last I heard the farmer had agreed a cut back price to get it back but nothing has been done so its still sitting there.

if you're not afraid of a bit of work then what about this multi coloured delight*

£425

quote 'engine went out of time and lunched on a couple of valves'

quote 'diesel injector pump, vacuum pump and alternator not with vehicle'

quote 'this is up for 3 day listing and needs to be collected before the 8th of december'

quote 'Time left: 6d 07h (08 Dec, 2013 20:09:59 GMT)'

Looks about as appealing as a penal scrapeing. It's hard to know what's the orignal and what's been tacked on (probably literally(.

I don't quite understand this approach - as if it's the car's fault that it probably wasn't serviced as well as it could be. Or as if no other 4x4s use propshaft UJs. Land Rovers can suffer from very loose axles if the radius arm mounts go (as at least one Autoshiter knows). That's pretty bloody dangerous but you don't here folk saying "avoid like the plague."

Perodua Kembara?

I've just spent a week driving this very one around Paphos, and as a runabout they are very acceptable (to coin a phrase).  1.3 Toyota engine, but otherwise pretty much a Daihatsu Terios.  This one's auto; I'm sure you can get them with a DIY if you feel you have to.  There isn't a lot of spare power, nor much in the way of spare space, but on the plus side, it'll fit almost anywhere and you are sitting high(-ish) so you get a decent view over lesser cars.  Can't comment on off-roading capabilities as I didn't do anything more serious than gravel car parks.

If you found one, I'd guess it'll be cheaper than the Daihatsu, which in turn should be cheap enough!

I'm seriously thinking about a Terios myself now - all I need to do is sell 3-4 cars and get a job.

Looking at it you could see it had one or two usual Frontera issues, surprisingly though the driveline was the only thing that appeared to work as it should. As you know the propshaft can go on any RWD or 4X4 so I can't just level that solely at the Frontera. However, I was in the bloody thing at the time and it is not a pleasing experience when the joint goes. The floorpan looked like a tin opener had been taken to the transmission tunnel.

I didn't mean my post to read as me stating to others GM SHITE AVOID VOXHALLS, but stating that I personally don't want another in fear of lightning striking twice. Ever.

Same as slating all Rovers when a head gasket has gone on a K series variant

Aye, I understand it must have been about as pleasant as setting fire to your own underpants while wearing them. But the brush/tar thing is surely what we always see beyond on this forum? We listen to 'sage' advice about 'avoid that horror story' and buy it anyway.

Daihatsu Fourtrak. Mostly the facelift on ones are left now. Watch for rust, just about the only thing that kills them. Welsh hill farmers are still devoted to the ones that are left.

Or as DW says, Ford Maverick/ Nissan Terrano, possibly the most durable vehicle to ever come out of Spain.

I feel obliged to recommend the Delica - the L300 looks the best IMO.

Probably wide of the mark for cort's requirements, but here's one anyway.
