Cavalier MK3 Help needed!

Right then been having a bit of a minor issue with my trusty 1993 L reg Cavalier 1.8i LS Hatch.

The Radiator fan keeps staying on after its cut in for too long since around 3/4 months ago. So back in September just before I went away for my B'day I changed the Radiator temp switch. Fitted that and seamed fine so I thought but shortly after I got back I became aware that it was still cutting in and sometimes staying on longer than needed.

So Im sure it's the Fan relay at fault as the temp gauge works fine as does the heater so that would rule out the Thermostat?

Which leads me to my main question. I know the fuses and Relays are located under the righthand side of the dashboard.

But when a friend took a look at it for me a while back when it was running with the fan staying on despite removing all the relays while it was still on he couldn't locate which one if any operated the fan.

The book of lies I have doesn't mention it though and I don't have the original owners book pack neither sadly to see if it covers it.

So was wondering if anybody knew where or had any information etc as to where the fan relay is.

Cheers. :-)

They're often under the bonnet, with the injection fuses/relays

Edit:

Just read up on Vectras, and there is a Brown relay in a black box next to the battery, apparently these are the fan timer relays, that allow the fan to run on for a couple of mins after you switch off. Try changing this one - if it's the same and see if it makes any difference.

May not be the same on a Cav, but worth a shot.

When I first got my 1988 944 the radiator fan ran constantly, so changed the radiator temperature switch for a new one. Fan came on as it should, but ran on for far too long. Replaced the temperature switch again with another new one and now it works properly and cuts out after a few minutes.

is it cutting in too early ?  was it the right switch  some are different temp ratings

Thanks Volksy for the link. Unfortunately there isn't an underbonnet fuse box just the diagnostics plug and the plug that has something to do with the fuel forget what it is now. Checked under the scuttle while I was there but to no avail still gave me the chance to spray the heater motor as it started to get a bit squeaky on the highest setting again. Just needs lubricating again as the motor dries out over time been 3 years since I last did it.

That thought that had crossed my mind Bobthebeard already but wanted to try the relay first before going to the hassle of changing it again.

Will be my next call if I can find the relay an fit a new one and it remains the same though.

Im sure that it the right switch as my brother who works for a Motor factors got it for me and he checked it all out for me with the rating etc before hand.

An I compared the two before fitting it to make sure they had the same number of pins just in case.

Faulty temp switch?

I'd say temp switch as well - test resistance with multimeter and off boiled water and see if it falls off when the temperature goes down. Boiling water can knacker these as the same with thermostats. These also have ballast resistors.

Thanks Cavette and Station think it's more likely to be the temp switch too but would still like to find out where that fan relay is though just for peace of mind.
