Audi quattro not gene hunt.

I have never used Vactan, but I am told it is effective. I am glad you are restoring this - I haven't seen one for so long, I cannot even remember when it was. I like the look of them.

The engine really is incredibly far forward in this era of Audis - I wonder why they did that. Does it affect the handling?

A good cheap alternative for rustproofing is white vinegar.

The toolset which came with my BMW was completely covered and I put all the tools a container of vinegar for a few days and it came out completely rust free.

So if you have any small parts that need removing and cleaning up it's well worth using.

After a second coat of vactan it's gone a lovely dark black,

Just need to pray for some warmth now.

I think it was because they mounted the engines longitudinally and had the gearbox behind.

And yes, it affected the handling rather substantially!

I would agree with that in the front wheel drive cars but it is not as bad on the Quattro's as they have extra weight over the back to even thing out a bit.

It's not so bad for the 4cyl cars, they were known for so-so traction in the snow compared with crosswise VAG because of mass behind the front axle. And one reason why they were fairly sweet through corners.

The 5 pot ones otoh would climb a snowy 1 in 5 on summer tyres.

I had a V6 quattro A6 3.0. It was possibly the most understeery thing I've ever driven, though I have to say in every other respect it was an awesome car. But chuck it into a tight roundabout and you could feel tread being scraped off the front tyres as it nose-dived past the apex.....

I think they cribbed the layout of the NSU Ro80 but instead of a compact Wankel they ended up with big 4 and 5 pot piston engines. Possible bollocks theory there.

They handle okay but my Audi coupe wasn't nearly as good to drive as the 405 estate I had at the same time.

What does, though? The 405 is an everlasting benchmark for so many things, if only the Lion could recover some of the 405's brilliance.

But I've always respected the handling of 80s, they're no-nonsense and actually fairly sweet even on bumpy road tight corners, for a German car. Those with the long engines were less nimble, even with 4wd. And far worse when the round shape came out in 87 - even the 5 pot quattros were judged unpleasant.

An interesting thought regarding the NSU influence at Ingoldstadt. But it's always a bother with inline fwd stuff. One solution is a lightweight engine or a boxer as with the 2cv, GS, Sud and in reverse, various German stuff.

Can you paint over Vactan?

Love this era of Audi, keep up the momentum!

I thought the engine-in-front-of-gearbox stemmed from the early 60s models that grew out of DKWs, and IIRC they had a lot of Mercedes engineering in them. Means the rad is at the side and makes the front of the engine vulnerable to damage in low-speed shunts.

Forgiveable for the noise the five makes, though.

Makes me realise I sold my 2.1 80 Quattro nearly 15 years ago but I can still remember the sound. My head was turned the other day but it was a new A3 - I assume the RS3 has a five. At shiter's prices, does the Volvo five sound as good?

I've scraped of all dodgy bits of under seal wire brushed all the rusty bits then two good coats of vactan and two good coats of industrial girder paint.

The finished look.

While acces is easy I though I would just stick the new fuel pump and filter on.

I unscrewed the bottom of the sill cover and lifted it up to clean up the sill lip as the rubberised underseal was pealing from the metal, this too was in good condition so vactan and paint and job done.

My C70 T5 sounds amazing. Especially with roof down and above 3k.

Why did the man end up selling after saying 'no'?

Are those tilters any good, are they easy to tilted over with death?

Dads had an 850 AWD for 20 years, I occasionally borrow it to shift furniture and that. I think it's 193bhp, not the most potent engine they fitted in them but it still hauls its ass along very smartly when the throttle is hoofed. And yeah, nice sound!

The trick with these quattro's is to load the front up unto understeer then induce lift off oversteer, and dab the throttle to make it behave.

Or if you're feeling particularly Stig Blomqvist you use the left foot to dab the brakes on as the front end starts to scrub the tyres off, that tends to bring the back round a bit.

Also.  I bloody love this era.  I'd have another boxy 80/90 in a heartbeat and a 90 Quattro loon is on my list of cars I should really have laying around.

I mind watching a stage of the Scottish in the middle of the night mid 80's. Stig in a short quattro on an S bend.

Lights, noise, sideways, flame, flick, noise, stone throwing, gone.

Pure violent magic still fresh 30+ years later.
