Reliable* winter motoring passed on to a fortunate* other

No excuses for BL's troubled management-worker problems through the seventies and the ensuing communist-like nightmares it produced, but the Stag was probably designed, tooled-up and launched for less than the cost of MB's canteen's weekly order. At least there was a different engine for the Stag - doesn't the 129 just the inline sixes used in all the others?

Mercedes didn't have a saloon car anywhere near elegant enough to be re-processed into a two seater open-top car - and I don't think a Stag is unattractive. Remember these Mercedes were made when MB were at their peak, the Stag when the British industry was at its nadir.

Yes, there is always a reason for everything. But that can't be changed in retrospect and thus the cars do exist now as they are.

What do you think I would chose if I had the choice between a Stag and a R129?

Well, actually neither, but let's pretend it's the Stag.

Question is, did he bother to rebuild the engine? 30 miles could take two or three years to cover in Jersey.

He did, but I have a feeling that he rushed the job a bit, as he was anxious to get it finished.Timing chain went within 3 days of being back on the road. On inspection, it was discovered that it wasn't what it said on the box, and was a counterfeit part. Apparently, this is not uncommon in the classic car world, apparently there's a lot of counterfeit Lucas / Unipart ignition stuff floating around, although in the case of Lucas I'm at a loss to see how it could be any worse than the original kit!

Are you going to grow a fake moustache?

Yeah, and sideburns and wear a Hawaiian shirt with the top five buttons unbuttoned and a golden neckchain with a fake tiger tooth pendant on the hairy chest. Fuggin ace.

If it only were true. Unfortunately the majority of Stockport's male populace considers being shaven, tattooed to the neck and clad in track suit and trainers appropriate attire for showing oneself in public. Quite disgraceful, really.

Good purchase, an old boy who lives near me has 3 stags 2 of them road legal and underneath them is as polished and shiney as the body but he actually uses them pretty much daily, he has done an excellent job of the restorations, the other one is getting the same treatment as we speak

Can you tell the females apart?

Yes, they sport Croydon facelifts instead of being baldheaded and push a three-seater pram.

Good to know your taxes are being spent wisely, then.

Let me put it this way - I'm a strict opponent of Social Darwinism and Eugenics, but my position is challenged every day.

And that's as far as I will go with politics in a thread that's about the wise* decision to purchase an open car with appropriate weight distribution as a WBoD (Winter Beater of Distinction).

I don't have a problem with these at all.  I recon they're good looking cars and have a v8 all be it a bit cobbled together. I think slagging off a car in here because it's prone to rust is like slagging off chocolate on a website forum about chocolate.

Rust is like stubble on BL cars, you cut it or grind it off and it just comes back the next day, it's all part of the ownership experience. My SD1 has done 500miles in a year and been inside for most of that and the bastard's already starting to bubble up.

...less dosh would have bought you a phairly phit R129, which would give you faithful, trouble-free service for the next decade or three.

Based on the W124? I'll say no more...

Not given it a good clean which is my favourite bit about getting a new car, but been blasting round constantly watching the temp gauge which so far is rock solid no messing no overheating.

Spent the afternoon cleaning it and its come up good, ordered some parts so got oil and filter coming and it came with one of those 'accu spark' kits so going to fit that tomorrow as its still on the points, I am too young to understand the working of points and I have never had a car with them, even my mg had electronic ignition.

Already ordered some rocker cover gaskets before I picked it up today so going to fit them tomorrow as well, and when I move into my new house in the next few weeks when I am not ripping woodchip off I am going to back flush the cooling system so I know there is some good stuff in there get it up on my axle stands and put four to five tonne of the underseal on after I have scraped the old shit off. And obv loose the stag head on the dashboard. Its glued on with some military grade stuff though.

Then some omghgfsnowcaosgr8fordriftin will comence. Its got passio debica tyres on the back so I am sure there will be no traction issues at all*

Good work Dant. If you are moving into a new house and yet still have enough energy to contemplate 'managing' a stag at the same time you must be made of stern stuff so RESPEK!!!!

You know you said that stag ornament was glued on, is it possible it's actually bolted down and that's why it's impossible to remove?  Of course, you'd decrease the (shiter's) value if you removed it.

Posted

I drive along laughing at it, its glued on as its a speaker cover that comes off which its attached to and you can see the glue underneath.

The bloke I bought it off looked like he enjoyed a good ornament.

I need to know what glue he used, then maybe the boot badges will stay on the Princess.

No glue can actually do that, it is a known law of physics, or biology, or chemistry or something. Read in April's PC mag that some bloke in Finland decrapped his cooling system with 10 litres of white vinegar. Warm the engine up and leave overnight, drain and admire the gleam.

Used it all week for work, commute is 14 miles each way= cost a fair bit in cash money, might have to use the 306 dizzler moar often for work, all the smiths dials fog up in the morning, but the clock is made in West Germany so obv this doesn't fog up at all and makes a very loud noise.

I got caught up in the rain and I wont be going through any drive through car washes in a hurry, unless I need a shower.

When your telling everyone at work your dead busy so can't help anyone but really your hiding away telling people about your rusty stag. Well it is Friday, sod working.

Done a good 500 miles in it and it hasn't broke down yet. Touch wood.

The fuel gauge flashes on when you accelerate.

Think it's probably just flashing up to tell me I am using lots of fuel take it steady.

It leaks engine, gearbox and diff oils on my nicely painted garage floor but only a bit so I will let it off.

People was telling me you can't use that through winter and I was like don't be silly it's a grand tourer.

Above 60 hurricane Catrina enters the cabin from the gr8 fitted roof and you can't hear anything because of the wind noise, it takes about twenty miles to defrost the windscreen and on the unlit bits of motorway the 1970s spec hids and my gr8 eyesight is a challenge.

I have flushed, back flushed and then flushed the rad and cooling system and it was all clear with hardly any crap coming through so that's good changed oils plugs etc

But fitted a accuspark elec ign jobby but now it takes a few more turns to fire first thing???? So don't know what I have ballsed up there but apart from that it's been ace.

Yes, newfangled tosh. You need more petrol with it, too and it has less powah.

Put the points back in and shit on everything designed after 1986.

Slightly dodgy stag being used for winter commuting. That's got to be a 9/10 on the shiteometer, only dropping a single point for it being an appreciating classic (if not turned into rust by April).
