We constantly hear of cars being rare, or extinct, and I think the evidence of this comes from the howmanyleft.co.uk website?

 

Looking at my Saab 900 T16, it's a bit complicated because it splits them up into so many sub-models, but seems to be claiming that there are only a couple of hundred left. Shurely not - I seem to see them everywhere I go.

 

Austin Ambassador and Princess, 158 combined?!

 

For the Hillman Minx, it claims 1,300 on the road, which sounds a lot more along the lines of what I would have expected.

 

Could it be that the numbers are understated?

i rely on it for my car spotting, its a really good and reliable site for that kind of information, as you said they do split them up into sub categorys for like special editions and different models. you need to know if your car is a special edition for not before you use it.

It's unreliable as it relies on the dvla being accurate and up to date, as well as registering cars correctly in the first place.

 

I've had 3 Daihatsu Mira's and none said Daihatsu Mira on the V5 because whoever originally registered them did so incorrectly, they were not imports either.

According to HML my HPE is down as the last one on the road. This is because mine says HPE 2000 VX on the log book. The thing is some HPE's were registered as Beta's, Beta HPE, HPE etc. etc. It is not the last one on the road.

According to HML, my Rover Montego is one of either 9 or 11 left; not entirely sure as my 1.6LX is down as a 1.6L on the logbook.

 

The best I saw was Q677 ATV, one of our Douglas DC-8 pushback tugs, which was recorded as a Reliant. We also had several FMC Commander 15s and AMSS TC886/888s which although were registered didn't actually have a make or model against them in the Doovla systems. Anything reliant on the DVLA is a steaming pile of woe and mistakes best left to people who rely on it for their car spotting.

Apparently, I have a Sapphire that is one of around 160 survivors, out of 28000 of the type. True? Possibly, nobody saves the base models any more.. people try to rescue the Ghia/XR/Cosworth models first....  Will it be worth more for rarity value over a similarly aged high-spec model? Well that would be nice.

It's about as accurate as Parker's Guide. If it didn't leave an ink mark when you wiped your arse on it it'd have a single, solitary use.

 

Seems to me that HML is predominantly used by internet auction site tits trying to pass off their Mk5 Escort as being the only one left. Probably because they typed in 'metallic blue with 3 non-matching wheeltrims and it's parked at my nan's house in Oban' or something.

I somewhat believe it, given the OMGMPG of 2.0 GTX automatics. I get about 26, so most of the 160 made must be scrapped by now.

OmGHowManyLeft is, unfortunately, a crock of bollocks. Thier data is is a few years out of date and doesnt take into account that some batches of cars were incorrectly registered.

 

Didn't someone here have a Talbot or Renault of some sort that HML said there were none left?

HML lists Land Rovers from the 1930s (production started in 1948), various 5cyl Land Rovers from the 70s (no 5cyl engine prior to 1998) and only 2 of the Heritage editions left (there were 6 for sale on the net and one parked three streets down from me when I last checked). 

 

Any one-make geek could probably spend half an hour browsing to find loads of incorrect listings relating to "their" brand.

table veh0120 is the one you want for licenced and veh0121 for SORN

Domestic Management's late dad had a 2.0GTX auto estate. I was allowed to use it a few times - it went like the proverbial. Never realised they were so rare! Rest in pieces, G272BFA...

There's also some other quite interesting tables available on the DVLA dump.

VEH0124 gives number of each make and model newly registered in a given year - so not survivors, but actual new cars hitting the road.

 

So who was it, I wonder, who newly registered a Rover 827SLi Auto in 2011? Was it the same person that also put a Renault 25 GTX on the road in the same year?

WHAT.THE.ACTUAL.FUCK Someone has registered a new Rover 827 SLi auto. I bet its been given an age related plate.

 

Come to think of it, won't these just be re-imported cars or something equally explainable?

It probably is an import. It's more exciting to think that the entire production line was cranked back into life just to spit one car out the end, like the biscuit factory in Bagpuss.

I was thinking more that someone had bought one and stored it away for years when someone else came along, bought it and registered it. I did hear about a Mk1 Sterling that had never been registered, never saw it myself, it had been sold to a collector from Austria or something.
