Considering an MG ZT V6 on LPG - am i a lunatic?

fancied one for ages, and had been looking at the diesels, but a V6 190 + on a 51 plate has come up with a BRC multipoint LPG conversion on it.

104k on the clock, seems to run well on gas and petrol, no overheating issues and timing belts changed at 93k, plus its had recent tyres, clutch and brakes.

he wants a grand for it with a years ticket but no tax, although doubtless i could chip him down a bit.

Would I be likely to enter a world of pain trying to run something like that or are they actually alright? Anything else i should look for other than the belt change?

Was quite surprised by the lack of toys given its quite high spec with the v6 etc - no trip computer or cruise control etc although it does have the leather seats and climate control.

I'd bloody love one of these but a grand is slightly salty. As you point out, you could certainly knock him down on the price a bit. It's had all if the OMGROVER bits done though so I can't see anything nit to like.

If the timing belt has been done and you can knock him down a bit, I'd say it was well worth it. I reckon it can't be too long before cared-for examples of these start creeping back up in value.

I had a V6 75 with an LPG conversion and it was gr9. I only wish my current one was so equipped.

Which timing belts have been changed? There are three apparently, one at the 'wrong' end. A good LPG system is worth having, but it'd be interesting to know if it has been serviced. People seem to fit and forget.

Have a good test drive and (assuming it's a manual) make sure the synchromesh is good on all gears and that the clutch operation is bob on. The clutch slave is a bit of a sod. If you buy it, run through the 'I've just bought a 75/ZT' list, which includes making sure the scuttle drains are clear (or the ECU gets flooded when it rains).

1000 does sound like top money for one. Nice cars though.

If the you get OMFGHGF on one of these I think it's pretty much night night as the engine's buried in the car. Then again that could happen on any old car. Much like any FWD v6 the back bank is pretty much impossible to get to.

I recon if you could chip off a the price of a years tax you'd be laughing.

Alan Partrige is offered a V8 K series running on LPG to replace his Rover 25

Tempted. I'm going to bid him 800 and see what he says. At that if I get a year out if it im laughing. There's £200-250 on a good day over the bridge and probably £150-200 in the alloys and tyres, so even worst case it's not a hellish loss.

Given I work in radio, an mg/rover takes me one step closer to becoming partridge which is worrying.

It does sound quite promising. If the worst does happen and it's a decent lpg system on it that alone should be worth a few quid.

One of the chaps on the 800 forum was selling his LPG equipped ZT-T V6.  Then he had an attack of common sense, realied how much he loved the car and decided to keep it.    Glowing endorsment I reckon. :)

Mad as a mad thing but good luck with the bid. These are nice but they scare me.

Bought one... But not the V6. A 53 plate cdti for a grand. Pics to follow...

Let us know how you get on with it. I have a feeling I may end up replacing the boring with 75 dizzler

its a CDTi - 133k - with a lot of the tasty optional extras - auto dim mirror, reversing sensors, rain sensitive wipers, xenon self levelling headlights with the guide me home thing, the alpine stereo with harman kardon speakers ( which were a rare option - cost someone a fortune at the time and while good, really arent that amazing) and the information centre with the fuel computer etc - the V6 i looked at didnt have any of that and was really basic for a big car

Its got a few issues - the central locking is dodgy - unlocks on the fob fine but doesnt lock on the fob or with the key - yet it will lock and unlock fine with the button in the centre console. Weird.

intermittent ABS light

and the airbag light was on. Fixed that already with a squirt of WD40 on the yellow connectors under the drivers seat.

All new tyres, 11 mths ticket and tax til december with half a tank of diesel - I dont think i was robbed at a grand. Chuffed with it.

I live in Troon Dave you could have got a free cup of tea.

It looks smart I think you've done alright at a grand as the diesel ones seem to have a decent premium on them. I'll be interested to see how you get on with it.

The only thing i'd may look at getting done is the swirl flaps. This old girl is bound to have problems with her flaps soon......

I don't think the blanking kit is too expensive or hard to fit. Given your previous form with cars I'd be tempted to do it.

That sounds pretty good for a grand as the cdti's are usually a bit more than the cdt's ... cdti = more powah

What the hell are the swirl flaps?? You're right about the form with cars although I will say the Focus TDDi I bought a few months ago has been bloody good. Not had any problems with it despite being all over the UK in it.

The MoT is just out and the clutch is very high (although not actually slipping) so temptation is just to weigh it now I've got the MG but since a clutch kit is only 60 quid I'm going to get my mate to stick a test and clutch on it and find it another home.

I always feel if a car has been a good un you owe it another chance !

They're flaps that disrupt the airflow in the inlet manifold so fuel can adhere to it better or some such shite. Well know on BMW diesels for dislodging, dropping into the engine and sharting the whole thing.

I've probably given you false concern though as it seems the Rover/MG version didn't have them, which I'd say is good news.

I'm quite had I don't have any swirl flaps in that case. Strangely it's on the logbook as a 114 but badged and in the service pack as a 135+ .. It seems too perky to be the 114 but how do you tell the difference?

Feck, that's well tidy Dave, massive wantage from this side if the Forth! On my ' to own' list one day.
