Access a cached copy of autoshite.co/index

Each time I try and access AS I get the message above saying that Google Chrome couldn't find AS. I'm now on via this cached copy thing whatever that is.

I hate PC's, web things and technology generally.

Ah, just remembered the .co and .com thing. Just done .com and all is well. Sorry for being stupid but it is quite early in the morning and the cat litter fumes have obviously increased the dumb.

Dave, would it worth us chipping together and paying for some hosted servers space ? I'm sure there's hosting that's sole job is just to run these boards?

I'm just mentioning it as If you're running in house (I presume you are running the servers in house) then the board's at the mercy of power outages/your internet connection going down/other things outside of your control.

It also means that if (lets obviously hope this never happens) something happens to you or you get pissed off with our constant wittering someone else can take control of the board. One of the mods/electric leyland can have some credentials to get into the hosting should you not be available.

I'm not bringing this up as a criticism.  We all appreciate the hard work you've put and the new board is much better than the old one but but if we keep having issues around availability the forum will eventually die off and new members won't come back etc.

What does everyone else think?

There was mention on FB of free hosting packages. I do agree that a hosted service may be better - the BX Club is on a server in a bedroom and it does have a habit of falling over fairly frequently. If the chap's out at work, then there's no chance of recovery until he's home.

Obviously I'm very grateful for Dave's work, just pondering options.

I wholeheartedly agree with cort/Trig/DW above.

Apart from all the work you do Dave it would appear that you're forking out for the hardware and leccy as well, which isn't fair on you. Plus, hosted should have back-up power and network should the worst happen.

Its already on one of my servers on tinterweb.

Its not at my home, its actually in Europe.

I would like to put it on a much faster server as i have had to scale mine down considerably since illness stopped work.

My servers are fairly ancient by current standards now

but we are talking £60 plus for a basic dedicated or a good vps server & thats per month.

£60 a month just to host a piddly wee car forum??? You're 'avin a giraffe, Shirley...

Thats how much a decently fast server costs some of that being for cpanel.

At moment you are getting it for free which i am happy to cotinue.

If you think you can do it cheap on a tuppeny hapenniee server be my guest.

The only chrome in your life should be pitted and on the trim of your cars.

Sorry if this is a stupid / irrelevant question - I don't know much about IT stuff. But what was the server arrangement for the old forum and how much (if anything) did that cost?

I know the old forum had its own major problems which we are thankfully now rid of - spam, access for new members, etc - but I don't recall the server ever being as problematic back then.

is there a problem with server  that i dont know of then?

I was assuming (based on what others have said) that the reason the site has kept going down in recent weeks was because of an unreliable server. If that is wrong then just ignore!

Think Dave may be (rightly) taking slight offence here!

He is working hard at keeping us online, presumably at his own expense, and putting in a lot of his own time. Not to mention the effect on his health.

All this at no cost to us...

Be gentle with him. None of us want Autoshite to disappear temporarily or heaven forbid, for ever, but it is too soon to start asking questions that could be taken the wrong way eh? His nerves/patience must be wearing a bit thin by now!

We are grateful Dave!

Dave, no offence intended, it was just myself and some others thought that you were running the server on a box at home. Following the outages and issues last week, mentioned below it did sound like it was at your house.

Got up this morning to find no power in street.
Just came back on.
B
My pc and one of my lappies are dead, presumably from power surge as they had both been left on overnight.
Am on old sloooowww lappie and have just discovered that i have many messages from pingability saying that autoshite server has been up and down like a whores knickers overnight and has finally shat itself totally.
Autoshite is getting put on my main server forthwith.
Its going to take a while as i have to go buy a motherboard/cpu for my pc first, then get that running before i can do anything on autoshite.
Should be up later today though.
I cant believe my run of problems recently, dunno what i have done to offend the great server god recently.
Well pissed
off

The suggestions of paying to have it hosted were merely to try and aid the forum stability and relieve some of the pressure from yourself. Now you have told us that it is all ready out there and not at chez daveb47 we can drop that suggestion.

No offence was intended, I think we all just want what's best for the forum and if at all possible to relieve some of the pressure from yourself.

What Skattrd said .Yes indeed, if the ship has steadied then I don't think there's any point in changing anything over .

Please don't get offended by what's being said we're just trying to offer up a different solution that wouldn't cost you anything if the problems persisted (which it looks like it hasn't)

I was suggesting going over to a host who runs IP Board as a dedicated service, which meant it's cheaper, you get to use their DNS and there's no server maintenance to work about.

These seem to be from 15 - 30 dollars a month £10 - £20 a month depending on the no of visits the site gets.

Something like this.

Review on Webhostingtalk on Siteground.

icon20.gif
Warning to SiteGround.com users who consider their shared hosting

Their shared hosting settings, namely:

- MySQL wait_timeout (currently set up to only 10 seconds? standard on other shared hosts is at least 60 seconds)

- Cronjob running time (no more than 1 cron job per 30 minutes)

and possibly all other common settings are so restrictive that it feels like XX century again. Having hosted sites in the XX century I didn't experience such restrictions on a shared hosting.

When I asked them about it, they posted a typical response about 'saving server resources' and directed me to their much more expensive VPS hosting plan. But my site is very simple to even have to consider VPS hosting.

I thought to myself - 'IF you didn't oversell, you would not have problems with server resources. It's XXI century here, hello?'

So now I'm stuck with another 10 months of useless SiteGround shared hosting. Nice marketing ploy they have: oversell as much as physically possible, change all settings to bare minimum, and count on suckers to buy their VPS plan in the meantime.

Cheap is not good on hosting,Using a server like my one they are probably running 200 or many more sites on it,each sharing the resourses.
Waste of time on fairly busy site such as autoshite.

Hey Dave,

Not sure how much of our ramblings you actually read on here, but in my opinion all is now fine on planet Autoshite!

The general mutterings are just out of fear of losing the forum. Nothing personal was ever intended I am sure!

Huge respect for actually sorting the thing out. I would have been in tears after two minutes based on even the most simple IT stuff I have needed to correct. All thing computer based is a closed book for 99% of us I am sure. Easy to point the finger and whinge.

Less easy to actually sort the shit out though. Obviously!

From early evening till the sun came up.

I had to resort to porn.
