My neighbour has a 1997 r plate astra tds. Is this the gm or isuzu lump? It has diesel written in black on the rocker cover. He just wants to know if it will run on veg? Thanks

Low blow GM turd.

Dunno if they like veg. I will do some digging.

Computer says no. Thought as much,

Come to think of it, volksangel's brother is/was running a GM TD on it, despite advice not to - from many, including me.

I feel like I have forgotten so much information lately. :/

Apparently the 1.7 Low Blow Job is simply an enlarged Cavalier Mk2 1.6d unit, bestrapped with a turbo not to increase performance but to improve emissions.

Two Fords in my sig shall hopefully redeem me!.

I have been unfortunate enough to own a couple of Vau*****s before. The Early Learning Centre-style interiors are a source of amusement and annoyance.

B the dub, Bollox... My Volvo-diseased mate is interested in your jew canoe. He doesn't like to see them fragged.

God no. Anyone who ever drove a 1.7 DR will tell you the low-blow is streets ahead in terms of acceleration.. Literally.

Anyone who has TDCI in user name and mocks the glory that is Teh Griffinâ„¢...looool 'coughinjectorsdmfdashetcetc'

Ugh, ghastly things with shat all power. tough little buggers though..we had a 1.6d cav on a minicab fleet circa 1992 that we all despised because of its lack of power (even the 2.3d sierras were quicker)  and it resisted all our attempts to blow it up

You do know, shirley, that ALL VXLS R SHIT...?

The last word in my username may give you an idea of where I stand on certain issues with these fine steeds! 8)

The slow blows are awful compared to the Isuzu engines. They seem quite gutless and wheezy in comparison.

Oh bub2006 you should've known better than start a Vauxhall thread, as THY ARE AL £&@$ and everyone on here HAS DRIVIN TEHM ALL.

ENCLUDING YORS! (ps although the 'insert old vauxhall car here' wos good)

Isuzus are Magnum P.I.

Low Blows are Hetty Wainthrop Investigates.

I have driven all of everyone else's cars at least twice, and the only ones that are shit are Vauxhalls. Except with the Isuzu unit in place. They are the shizz. Particularly if you have the 3.0 V6 Renault unit.....

I would beg to differ. The TDS were all Slowblow that I know of, plus in the OP it says 'diesel written in black on the rocker cover.' Shirley if it was an Isuzu it'd have that funky red '1980's computer font' type type?

Hey all we need is another Proton thread and the set is complete. I erroneously started a small/big thing interface and here's the Vauxhall thread. Who put the horse/train picture and that Land Rover up in the top cupboard where nobody can reach it?

Bub - if you can post a pic of the engine then we can tell for sure.

If you can't post a pic then check google images for pics of the differences between the GM & Isuzu engines.

These are the so called 'GM' engines:

This is a so called 'Isuzu' engine:

Never looked before, but they look the same apart from the turbo and displacement (1.5 and 1.7)? I always assumed the red 'TURBO' rocker cover was the Isuzu and the black 'DIESEL' cover was the GM, but think the only difference is turbo/cc???

I had a look here and it says the GM engine has no sticker, and looks more like the old 8vs of the 80's/90's:

http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/engines-transmission/316618-isuzu-vs-gm-engine-appearance.html

So in fact anything with a 'DIESEL' or 'TURBO' sticker on the rocker cover is an Isuzu engine. ;)

they look same becouse there all isuzu engines.the later vauxhall diesels all had diesel on the rocker box.and id much rather have a vauxhall than some french bit of crap

An XUD? C'mon, even as a Vauxhall man myself, you can't knock this rattly old workhorse. :)

they were a good lump it was the car around them most ofthe time that let them down.mind if it wernt for them id prob be out of work cos thats 90% of what we have in at work.

All the above pictures are Isuzu engines.  These are good.

The GM low-blow is this one-

GMturbodiesel.jpg

It's not good.

Isuzu engines have turbo at the front, GM low-blow sites it at the back.

All are suitable for decent bio as I believe even the low-blow has a Bosch pump.  The Isuzu has a Bosch copy and is equally reliable.

Incidentally, any Astra-F that has TDS on the tailgate would have been born with an Isuzu engine.  The low-blow models (generally Merit and LS spec) were badged 1.7 D Turbo.

Posted

That's the one, with the mad oil cap - I haven't seen many of those GM ones about to be honest, it's mostly Isuzu's.

Posted

With any luck, most of the low-blows will have been 'recycled' a few years back.  I worked on them from new, they were always a disappointment.  Isuzu cars were good from day one, whether it was a 1.5, 1.5TD, 1.7 or 1.7TD.  You can tune these engines for good power, but I've never seen the point when a 20XE sits so nicely in an Astra-F :)

There's a version of the GM TD that has roughly the same power as the Isuzu TD, it took its place, fact fans.
