CortinaDave Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 AKA the "computa - digit" style that we were talking about on here a while back. Did anyone manage to find somewhere that could make up a set? my mid-80's capri is crying out for them....
Milford Cubicle Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 I don't think so, but Framptons do some suitably period plates with not-quite-right fonts. http://pl8s.co.uk/page3.html
Ross_K Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 I haven't forgotten about the place I was going to check out over here re. the Serck plates. The early arrival of the twins here at _K towers has kinda put my ventures into the outside world on hold, but normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.
mk2_craig Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 Dave do you want pressed steel or will laminated plastic do? A1 Plates of Leicester will make the latter.
CortinaDave Posted August 28, 2008 Author Posted August 28, 2008 Laminated plastic would be about right on a Y reg car I thnk.. I'll give them a shout. Just checked the website and no serck option but I'll give them a buzz
mk2_craig Posted August 28, 2008 Posted August 28, 2008 Dave you want their "EuroStyle" font, their online plate maker has it under the Show Plates section.
CortinaDave Posted August 29, 2008 Author Posted August 29, 2008 Craig sir... you a a god of shite.serck coming my way http://www.a1-plates.co.uk/creator.html ... ubmit=Next
uncle silvia Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I got some pressed Aluminum ones for mine for £28 a pair next day delivery! Contact Carnoisseur or Dubmister!
Split_Pin Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Fantastic - I'm ordering a set of the pressed-on letter styles NOW!
CortinaDave Posted August 29, 2008 Author Posted August 29, 2008 They look fantastic.. my only criticism would be that the letters maybe look a bit thinner than the SERCK font.. its a bit like old charles wright vs new charles wright. Maybe I'm wrong though! They are near as dammit though and will look the biz on my capri!
mk2_craig Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Is the font size on the Corolla's plates actually a motorcycle spec perchance? They look to have the right height/width proportions for the pre-2001 standard but obviously smaller than the 57mm characters used for cars etc.Pressed metal plates are GR8 but I'm not sure about fitting them to anything newer than the mid-1980s; most dealers were all over the laminated plastic with their own logos incorporated by this time. Didn't stop local councils and the likes of Royal Mail continuing to insist upon them until the late 1990s however, and (if my recollection is correct) cars in Ford's own press photos had their own almost unique variation until long after other manufacturers had ditched them in favour of more modern looking items...
Guest Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 My A-plate Charmant has dealer-installed Sercks, wish the Galant did but I've got a set of those Framptons metal ones: Look smart enough but if I find some Sercks they'll be coming off! I'm undecided what should happen with my C-plate 323 though, as Craig says the metal plates would have been long in the tooth by the mid 80s and it might look odd. A bit like when people with early 70s cars install black/silver plates when from new they'd have reflective ones.
Father Ted Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Has anyone actually gone into a branch of Serck and asked them if they still do pressed metal in the italic font? I know I live in-between two branches and have been supremely lazy in not going myself, but its just a thought...
Guest Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 I was going to investigate it, but I think my local Serck branch has disappeared!
Split_Pin Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 My local autobits shop does italic Serck style I have an old serck from an A-reg Escort with the original Laidlaw dealer logo, overlaid with a later 'peoples' sticker!I'm going to get a set of the metal plates with the plastic letters for my 03-plate Astra, just for a laugh (and because I love them and dont have a suitable car for them otherwise)

Ratdat Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Just been having a look at all my cars and amazingly nearly all of them still wear their original plates. Most have aluminium plates with raised plastic letters like the ones on Bernies Charade... My Datsun 1000 estate which being 1968 has black with white letters but still ally plates with plastic letters... My 510 has the old pressed aluminium plates but white/yellow as it's 1971. Only one has Serck plates and that's Bernies (ex-DC) Pug 205... Incidentally, does anyone know if you can buy reflective white or yellow adhesive vinyl from sign makers? I got tons of old plastic letter style plates which would probably provide enough digits for me to make some fresh plates up.
CortinaDave Posted August 30, 2008 Author Posted August 30, 2008 SERCK used to be quite happy to make up the plates for you.. I got a set in my local branch for a sierra i had in about 2001 so it probably just depends which branch you use.The one near me closed down ages ago though and i dont know of any more in this area
mk2_craig Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Ratdat, it should be fairly easy to get some adhesive yellow and white number plate backings. I bought one last year for a trailer board and there's plenty demand from the rally boys.I did wonder whether the "Serck" style font (it must have a proper name?) has perhaps been "retired" and all users of the dies had to return them to whoever was the original producer? Ross_K has got the closest to finding someone to produce them as far as I can tell; I've seen a single solitary Leyland Roadrunner registered here carrying this style of plates within the last year and that's it!

Conrad D. Conelrad Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 I saw a hand painted Transit with Sercks this afternoon.
brammy777 Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Ive seen two MKI Fiestas in the past few days, both had original plates. One was SERCK and the other was raised letters.
