capri 2.8 injection - how much?

Recommended Posts

I've got the chance of a 2nd garage, so feeling the need to get another capri 2.8, preferably a special.

Obviously by now it's howmanyleft? scene tax drift yo! time, and people thinking any old toot without mot is worth coin.

eg:

No mot, dumped on grass, 4k to you squire.

So what realistically do I need in my piggy bank for something with mot and nice enough that it'll drive round for a few years without tea bagging?

£2000-£3000 will get a nice solid car that is a little rough-ish around the edges, that black car looks like a bag of shit.

There are loads of different capri forums out there, but this is one of the better ones http://www.fordcaprilaser.co.uk/

I know, as i've been looking at 2.8/3.0s for a while.

Most of the good ones get advetised on the forums first, as they tend to want them to go to enthusiasts, as oppose to the OMG HIT IT WIV DA STICK DATZ EPIC cock knockers.

I find Capri's fall into 2 categories.

Completely fucked and cost a fortune.

Spotless and cost a fortune.

I gave up on looking for another. Lot's more cars I want to try for a lot less than a worthwhile Capri would cost.

I've coming to the same conclusion, now i'm thinking mk1/2 supra essentially a japanese capri (that's how i'm selling it to my conscience anyway  )

Friend of mine has had two Supra's, very well screwed together. Toyota seemed to use 4 bolts where any other manufactured used two ! They do rot like Capri's however...

Capris are often seen with stupid selling prices, especially on Ebay. Yet I do hear of examples changing hands for very sensible money. Don't believe the hype. There are still too many out there for prices to get silly and they're still ridiculous value compared to RWD Escorts.

Amen to that!

Ive been there and done it, lost too much money on a supposedly "good" 2.8, that turned out to be a bag of shit.

They are not even that good, the driving position felt like i had to have my knees up to my chin ( Im only 6'1 not 7ft 2 ) and the gearstick/change was, well, ya know.

As for handling, dont go out on wet roads...

Its an each to their own thing, personally, there are as good, if not better out there without the need to sell a kidney to get one.

Overrated and underwhelming.

They sound good though.

Thats just my opinion.

i have to disagree with you there freebird

i'm six foot tall and found the driving position perfect (seat right back and legs straight when clutch depressed)

the five-speed type9 was a joy to use, especially with the straightened stick they use in the capri (even better with a quickshift stick)

the wet roads thing is a myth, yes they use cart springs but unless your using cheap, old, tyres and rotten suspension bushes the drive is fine

I would prefer the 3 litre capri over the 2.8i, but both are good useable classics at a fraction of the 'taxed' escort prices

There are lots of alternatives, and the one that springs to mind is a Porsche 944. Loads of tidy, saveable ones around for 1500 quid and a nice one with standard wheels etc seems to look better with each passing week - there's a pale gold one near me on a D plate woth the telephone dial wheels and it looks epic.

Not sure what spec this is:

But it's the one I'd be having on looks alone because black with the red stripe looks amazing. IMO.

Mine will be for sale soon but it's far better than most so not one at autoshite money

I saw that 280 at a meet this sunday gone and it wasn't as nice as I thought it would be however they will always fetch a premium over mine (a 2.8 special)

When I bought mine in 2002 - I had exactly the same problem.

1) either shite mods / not cared for / trashed / high mileage

or

2) mint original low mileage low owners.

I paid £3000 for mine back in 2002 which was strong money then - had 56k genuine (now 63k) only ever used in summer and I took it to le mans last year after a 4 year lay up and did 900 miles - car drove ace and driving position is spot on for me (i'm 5ft 10)

I don't want to do an auction as far too many dreamers etc - and as for price I've no idea / it's on par with that 280 condition wise..

Need to sell my festa pop and XR2 first :-(

Personally to get anything half decent I think your looking at £5000 minimum. Those at £3K will be just trouble IMO unless you drop on one lucky. As for mint ones I suppose it's what your willing to pay and if it's a 280 then just add a nought !!

Hmm, so 3 - 5 K required.

Or I could put that much into getting the one I've got fixed, but I guess it's better to buy one that's ok to start with as restoration cost are massive. (mine needs wings / inner wings / paint / is generally tatty).

I know they're expensive to buy but, as long as it's not out of your reach, surely cost isn't important if they don't depreciate?

Well it helps me justify my hobby anyway :D

They're good value, but a four-cylinder engine is just wrong in a sports car. Scimitar is still the 'value' Capri contender for me, they're true Autoshite.

Wasn't at Leeming Bar was it?

Its bananas. I bought a very straight but not by any means mint Y - plate 2.8 injection with a perfect half leather interior for £1500 in 2009, then sold it for much the same 6 months later. Now they've hit the OMGFORDTAX and you cant get anything with less rust than the Titanic for under £3k.

Sod property, wish I'd invested my cash in shite old Fords.

Yep sure was - you there ? great day out but sadly didn't take any pics.

No offence to the Ford fans, but I have never understood the appeal of OSF at any price, never mind the premium some command.

£3k for a not mint Capri seems daft to me. £3k would get a helluva Scimitar, a nice mk1 RX7, Alfa GTV, TVR Tasmin, or even a slightly scruffy Renault GTA.

I don't disagree and I don't class myself in the OSF brigade. as is usually the case as a kid I always wanted a 2.8 - one of those car itches I had to scratch. I was initially looking for a Starion Turbo but gave it up as a bad job (still want one 1 day)

Reason I want to sell mine is it just seams daft having all this money tied up in cars (the XR2 I paid £120 for 7 years ago and it's still mint)- and I fancy banking some of my investment and maybe buy a Silvia S12 for a fraction of the money and bank the rest- who knows...

Well Id deffo agree about the 3 litre. A nice facelift is on my bucket list, once ive won the lottery, of course.

Ive just shelled out £1800 on a 5A Scimitar, Id hate to think what it would have cost if it had been a 3 litre Capri.

Horses for courses, i suppose.

well when you essex pops a piston ring or boils its bearings

I agree.there are many nice rwd cars as an alternative, the bmw e36 328i coupe is so cheap at the moment and this is the type of car ford should have made after the capri instead of the fwd probe/cougar crud.Dont get me wrong,i like the 2.8i and really enjoyed a y plate 4 speeder i owned back in 86, HER434Y where are you now?.Just seems a shame that OSF tax is pushing prices out of reach of people who would really like one.Supply and demand i suppose.

I drove a 280 a few years back and thought it was just nasty. Fartless old V6, long throw five speed with ratios wider than <---------------this-----------------> and it felt joggly and just a bit crap. Drive a 944 or 325i from that period and it's a whole new ball game. I like Capris but would have a seventies one like a 3000 GXL. That way you can pass off the crapness as sheer old age - by 1987/8 there were cars available that would still be considered pretty good today.

Posted

I thought that about the gear change on my xr4i, which obviously has all the same oil bits. I thought it was odd as I always remember Ford boxes as being snappy and shot. The short shift kits are pretty cheap and supposed to make a real difference.

I go through phases with Capri's where I think I HAVE to have one then go right off them again. I don't think I'd go for a mk3 unless it was bargain offering I'd rather spend my money on a much better xr4i. I'd love a Roman bronze mk2 with a vinyl roof though.

another vote for the capri 3.0 here. I've owned both v6 versions, while its slightly quicker the 2.8i has no torque and a five speed box made of chocolate.

It's all academic now, Capris are priced way over what I'd ever pay for one.

Posted

I would like a V6 one at some point however they are getting so pricey that you can buy better cars for the same money - even if they don't have the cult following.

I would prefer a 3.0 to a 2.8 however the well known issues with the essex mean that as fords go it is'nt a cheap motor to rebuild.

Posted

I'd consider a 3 litre S in black, but an injection special is what really floats my boat. It's not important that there's better performing cars for less money. Performance is adequate.

I like them for the 80's nostalgia factor. 'Injection' says the stickers. Power! Futuristic! Yes, I know it's lies with the cart springs, but it's lies I want to believe.
