Micrashed Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Anyone else have one or use one?I bought a cheap generic Chinky one off eBay in January and frankly the picture quality is a bag of jizz. Its just about useful I suppose to show if someone does something a bit shit infront of you (like drives into you) but otherwise its of no use whatsoever really....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUtZF1PwvMI
Skizzer Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I used to use a Contour HD stuck to the side of my helmet when I commuted across London by motorbike, in case it was ever needed in court (bikers are often presumed to be at fault in accidents unless there's clear evidence to the contrary, thanks to a series of bizarre judgements in the 1960s and 70s). It was pretty good but you could have had about 12 of your £17 Chinese ones for what I paid for it. Here's a rather dull but authentic car crash video I shot with it:
Partridge Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 The number of times some plonker has done something silly which could have caused an accident has made me think of one. And with those insurance scams getting more and more prolific I think they’re not such a daft idea. As for those of a Impreza/M3/Supra “Turboah†disposition who want to put video clips of them drifting/speeding/crashing into a wall on YouTube they seem to already be quite popular. If you’re a real knob you can mount them on the side of your car to capture some "totally sick†drifting when you borrow your Mum’s 120d. If you’re serious about a dash cam why not just plug any old camcorder into the aux socket and gaffer tape it the dash? Done
willswitchengage Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 s are the daddy of compact HD recording, adored by the extreme sports community. Obviously dash cams can be interesting, but only really earn their keep if you're in London on two wheels. You will just end up being one of those people who writes angry letters to your local newspaper.

I should probably have added, after I stopped commuting by bike I lent my Contour to someone who was driving across North Africa and never bothered to reclaim it; don't really miss it.
Micrashed Posted April 7, 2013 Author Posted April 7, 2013 A helmet cam five years ago would have caught the bint who caused me to have a left arm which is largely titanium and keeps me awake at night - as it was she drove off into the sunset and we never did catch her.On the plus side I set off the metal detectors at work which is fun.

There’s some true arseholes in the world, aren’t there?
vulgalour Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 The best reason for having a dashcam isn't to prove the legal fault, or to record amusing crashes, or any of that. The best reason is so we can film utterly mundane journeys and update them to the internet or whatever we're using in the future and people can marvel at how we ever coped with explosion driven vehicles and recording things digitally. That and just how many Protons, Rovers, Qashquais, &c. there were on the road and how they don't make stuff like they used to. Sorry, my post is useless. I have been considering obtaining a dash cam though, just out of interest and to capture stills of those cars I seem to only spot when I'm driving and cannot operate a point-and-shoot camera at the same time.
AeroNautiCal Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Having a camera which records whatever you happen to be looking at would be good, and I'm sure there's affordable stuff available which does just that.
willswitchengage Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 That 1982 Ford Sierra that you saw on the way home on the Dunstable ring road but just couldn't get the phone camera out in time?
ProgRocker Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUtZF1PwvMI What tunes were being played on the stereo? Sounds a bit like a late 1970s/early 80s synth pop thing going on.

Des Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I'll not drive without one, the roads are full of arseholes who will run into you then lie through their arseholes, and lie to themselves that it's you fault.Don't search Russian dashcam on youtube, you'll be there a week. 'Rot bljad!'
jakebullet Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I keep thinking I should get one just for the angry letters to the local paper factor. Like why was plod driving the wrong way down a 1 way street? Or why plod on horse is exempt from traffic lights? Trouble is you really need 2 for when the tosser behind hits you and claims you rolled back into him.
ProgRocker Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 It's the theme tune to Brookside.... Thanks, Albert Ross!
Mr Lobster Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I like the idea of one and if I was doing a considerable mileage and a lot of driving then I could justify it. But most of my driving is relatively short journeys and the hassle of taking it out and putting it back in all the time would put me off tbh. If you could get a smallish camera that was hardwired into the car then that would be better I reckon.

For the price if it got nicked I wouldnt lose any sleep.

'Rot bljad!' +1 This. I don't tend to have one in the car, but at work I run a dash cam constantly in my artic. twice I've had altercations with other road users, both times the cam has proved them to be lying twunts.
Vanny Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 I have an Elm327 Bluetooth dongle plugged into the car and torque software on the phone which logs GPS position, engine telemetrics (speed, revs, throttle position, g force), it also does a good job of recording video. Excessive, probably, cost not including the phone was about 40quid. Given the excess on the company policy, it could save me a fortune in the longer term.
John F Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 : 1:30 - what's the tank, and what's it doing there??
John F Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 : 1:30 - what's the tank, and what's it doing there?? 1:30? That clip is only 22 seconds long. Arse. Wrong url, somehow. Here's the one I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUtZF1PwvMI It looks like a Chieftain but it's not massively clear in the vid.
Micrashed Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 Its a Centurian made in Leyland and we keep it pointed at Penwortham in case any of the fuckers try to invade.....
