Engine help....

Yo, PSA loving fellow shiters, here's a situation for you:

Today, after work, the 306 estate's clutch started making a sort of whining noise. Cleverly*, thinking it was the release bearing, I amused myself by sort of playing Morse code tunes with it at the lights. Not such a good idea as a few hundred yards down the road the clutch has jumped ship. It always felt a bit rough so I sort of expected it wasn't much longer for this earth, and I haven't helped by dropping the clutch and/or performing very quick changes to get it up to any sort of speed.

Now, it's no real biggie as I have other cars to use, plus the estate has to have the cam belt done soon I reckon AND one of the tensioners is a bit wonky, hence previous/current power steering issues.

Now, here's the conundrum: The hatchback (XUD) is my favourite but it needs to be a bit quicker, so this is the plan:

1) Can I fit a 2.1TD out of a Xantia (or something) into the 306 with out any major hassle, or is it going to either not fit or be a world of pain?

2) Assuming it won't, then the obvious (to me) answer is a 1.9TD, as some 306s had them from new. So, are there different versions of the 1.9TD, are any of them Bosch (thus veg oil friendly) and would a later (say 406) engine mean pissing about with ECUs, and all that shit?

3) Is the n/a gearbox the same as the turbo, or will it at least cope with the extra power?

4) Is the clutch the same?

5) Are DW8 and XUD gearboxes, clutches and engine mountings the same? I ask because I'd like to put the TD into the hatch, then take the XUD out of that and fit into the estate, which currently houses a DW8.

That's just a thought at the moment, because obviously I'm doubling/trebling the work required by piss arsing about doing a swap into the hatchback when it's not really needed. The other idea, of course, is to just lob a TD into the estate and have that as the hooligan/parts chaser/general tit about car. Assuming a TD will mate up to the DW8 gearbox of course, so...

6) Can I fit the TD engine onto the DW8 box and will the clutch need to be the TD one?

Thanks in advance.

No real help from me Billy, but I do think you're creating a lot of work.

I'd say just stick whatever TD in the estate and leave it at that. That will then very quickly become your favourite then you can flog the hatchback without the pain of 2 engine swaps.

Cavette, I’m pretty sure the later HDi stuff used the DW8 box as well, I don’t think PSA ever did a manuel box to use exclusively in HDi powered cars (not from the 90’s early 2000’s anyway).

Hope this helps.

Cheers lads, and I reckon you're right, Chris.

I don't especially want to put an HDi in as I reckon there'll be some sort of ECU related jiggery pokery and all manner of keys being coded and whatever.

I’d steer clear of any HDi stuff myself. Lovely and smooth but not as reliable as the good ole’ XUD. Plus they give you turbos to worry about and all the electrics to go with them.

Now ...I've a spare Magnum v8 and slush box you can have. A little bit of fettling to the bulk head and tunnel, knock up some brackets and cross members to hold it all in, add a rear diff axle and a couple wires to twist together and yor good to go. Gearbox and clutch worries are now gone and the whole lot should be transferable to the next tat hack. Easy, shouldn't take too long and good 5.9 economy.......On the down side there is no Bosch pump an it will not run on veg oil........but on the up side it will go like FUCKIN CHRIST. It is the best way to go............. Honest.

Plenty of 306s had the 1.9 turbo diesel. Mine was superb. If it's anything like the BX though, the gearing is taller. Given that it probably wouldn't be too expensive/difficult to buy a 1.9TD 306, I can't really see the point in bothering with an engine swap with the one you've got.

I don't want to sell my car to get another one!

1.9 TD engine from another 306 then remove the Lucas pump and injectors and fit your Bosch items

My 406 TD had a mechanical (Bosch) injector pump, so if you can bag one of those I can't see the electronics being too much of a nightmare to wire in.

Post-1996 1.9 406s and Xantias have an element of ECU control, I can't remember what it does - the pump still looks like a mechanical one anyway.

Post-1996 2.1s have Lucas EPIC pumps. Avoid.

Intercooler positions are different IIRC from the Citroens to the Pugs (though christ only knows why) which causes issues when you shut the bonnet. TBH if its that carked, get it cubed and use the inastate, or if youi really must use the hatch pull the engine from the estate. Personally it just seems like a lot of bollockache for very little gain.

There are other diesels out there....

The way I see it, Billy, it's way too much arsing around. Ebay/gumtree/preloved the estate for spares/repairs and buy a Dturbo hatch* with the money. If you want it quicker, it's an allen key and spanner job.

*I'd offer to sell you mine, but it's got a Lucas pump :(

Hmm, is it 'tweakable' though, Chris? I could (just about) live without veg if there's some decent, reliable power to be had out of it. Also (and here's the clincher) how much do you want for it, please?

Billy, it's already been done. It goes well, but to be honest, it's had an effect on the economy. I think I might also have to detune it a bit for the MOT, so I'll have to do a before and after to see what the way forward is. Really, I need to hook a boost gauge up, and check it's all been done properly, as I have a feeling the fuelling has been done but not the boost, as it smokes like a Huntingdon Beagle at low revs.

As for money, I'm not sure. It's due MOT soon, so I'd do that. Probably be around £750 mark, unless it fails it's bollocks off, then it'll be going spares/repairs.
