V6. No single letter and number more perfectly suited, enjoy! Looking forward to reading about it and seeing pics.

And yes... I do prefer V6s to V8s!

I've a reasonable idea who your crystal ball might be, on this occasion it is accurate - but don't rely on it to predict 6 lottery numbers cos it'll probably be a waste of a quid.....

Cheers for the supportive comments everyone so far, I'll update when collection has taken place, which weather permitting will be saturday morning. Should't be anything epic on the scale of some of the stories on here as it's only a few miles up the road, but there again it's an aging £500 car so anything could happen

Lovely engine, the Vauxhall V6. But having owned a 350 cubic inch V8, that's much more fun in every way. Except when refilling with fuel.

My mate could get 40mpg on a run from his V6 Calibra, most impressive.

I remember the owner of a business who was contracting at my place of work in 1990 brought his brand new calibra in to show everyone - a red example with alloys etc.

It looked a million dollars. Fast forward 12 years and I worked with a colleague who spent £3.5 K on a turbo 4x4. While he had it It had replacement chassis legs, gearbox etc but was moved on when the part of the transfer system died - by this point he was bankrupt. I told him that if he wanted a fast vauxhall he should have bought a 24v carlton or senator.

I really like the calibra - but I cannot remember the last time I saw one.

I saw one about 10 minutes ago, peeking out from under a pile of snow on my drive

Joe: Your numbers for this week are 12, 14, 19, 20, 26 and 34. Bonus ball is 17.

Right here goes ..... no major epics.

Collected johnf at some unearthly hour this morning (unearthly for a saturday anyway) and drove 60 minutes from Bradford to Oldham. Found the sellers house with no problems whatsoever.

ANyway onto the car ....

The previous owner has had it for about 10 years, but shortly after he bought the oil cooler exploded, so he put the car in his garage and forgot about it. Roll forward to last year when he came across a 3.0 V6 from an Omega, so this got fitted into the cally, after using it as a daily driver for the last 6 months he found it too thirsty for everyday use, hence the sale.

Its had a load of new bits including cambelt, stainless exhaust, oil cooler, sensors etc and has done about 10,000 miles since the engine was fitted.

I drove it home to Hebden Bridge where I live with johnf following in my discovery, we left the discovery at my house and then headed over to John's with him driving the cally.

1st impressions are superb, loads of grunt, nice smooth V6. Could do with the track rod ends replacing soon and retracking.

There is alledgedly a slight water leak, although in 70 miles today, it doesn't appear to have lost any, but will be keeping in eye on that.

The seller also gave me a copy of all the photos from during the work he's done to it.

Anyway, heres a couple of pics from collectiom, some decent ones will follow later when I dig the proper camera out.

Hoping to take it on the coniston meet if anyone wishes to see it for real

Yep, it seems to be OK.

We've just had it on the ramps & didn't find any horrors lurking underneath. The 3.0 engine's extra 40-ish bhp over stock is nice, I'm looking forward to fitting my 3.0 lump now

That looks great, the Calibra that turned up at the Dunfermline shite meet reminded me of their excellent proportions.

Is there a better replacement for those awful 'V' grilles?

Posted

Yeah, the earlier ones had the badge on the bonnet and looked loads better. I'd bet a 3.0 Omega engine must be fantastic in a Calibra.

Posted

Agree 100% about the V grille, it looks crap on the Calibra.

Unfortunately you can't just remove it as there are mounting holes cut into the bumper, so it would need an entire early bumper fitting. Or some form of cunning bodgery, which would probably be easier / cheaper.

Billy: yep, the 3.0 is noticeably livelier than the standard 2.5... it almost makes up for the lazy f25 gearbox / mahoosive flywheel combo.

Posted

I know somebody who put a 3.0 Omega engine in a Mk2 Astra. I saw the flywheel (carried over from the 2.5 Cavalier engine that was in the Astra before) and it was indeed gargantuan. Apparently having 14kg shaved off the flywheel makes the engine a bit more responsive.

I would imagine shaving 140 Kg off the weight of the bonnet would improve performance. Its years since I had a Cally but I still have the hernia from lifting the lid. :?
