Vegetarian motors for cheap - Now with purchase (page 6)

I am fed up.

I am fed up of having to spend about £50-£60 on unleaded explosion juice per week, just to get to work and back. I have a car I enjoy driving and do really like, but since I mostly drive it on a journey that is slow, miserable and I hate, it really isn't worth using it and I would be better off with something much more economical. With the hopefully imminent sale of the Orion, now seems to be the time to start looking for a new motor

I want a diesel, an old diesel without the DMF, DPF, OMFG, LOL or ESP bollocks so that it can be run forever and run on veg oil for ultimate mingebaggery.

Important Criteria:

It's not a Citroen BX or a Nissan Bluebird.

It needs to run happily on vegetable oil - with some diesel mixed in.

It needs to be no more than about £500 to buy and insurance needs to also be cheap.

I had been looking at the Rover 418 SLD, and there is a saloon close and cheap and a tourer (which I prefer) about a £100 train journey away. I really fancy one of these and have found numerous reports on the internets that they do veg oil, but then I have also found reports (including Mr Laquer Peels here) that they are Lucas pumps and will go boom if they go within 20 yards of a turnip.

I have also been looking at Poo-joe 306s but they seem to be an unknown quantity when it comes to what pump they will have and are also a little too expensive for my liking for one with MOT.

I was also very tempted by the Talbot Horizon that popped up on eBay with the XUD lump in it but it just didn't turn up at quite the right moment, and now that it is gone, I don't expect to see another crop up.

Anyone have any further ideas or suggestions?

A couple of years ago I ran a Fiat Tempra TD on both veg oil/diesel and used engine oil with no complaints

If you can find one an LCD dash is for winnahs

Ian Cavette?

I have pondered it, and it was up for sale, but despite it's complete lack of anything nice to talk about, I don't think I can sell it. Incidentally are you 100% the 218 always had Lucas/Cav/not Bosch pumps? I swear I read somewhere they could be run on veg as they were like the PSA in that some had the 'right' pump? Like the man in the built up shoes though I stand to be corrected.

Just found a dull but cheap and long MOT'd 1996 MK3 Golf 1.9 diesel reasonably locally. Any ideas on the veg friendliness of these? I'm sure that I have heard of these being run on it happily.

Other cheap options seems to be the Citroen Xsara 1.9, Rover 45 2.0 and the Pug 106 1.5.

If I found a Fiat Tempra, I would be chuffed, however they are a little thin on the ground now.

I think old Ian Cavette's Bosch pumped 306 is still for sale

Sadly Chester if fucking miles away from Devon (as is pretty much everywhere) so it doesn't quite make economical sense, and I don't quite like them enough as cars to go all that way for one.

99% sure Golf will have it, think they were all Bosch pumps.

*Edit: old Golfs like the one you mentioned, that is. Modern 'PDi' engine ones won't have it.

Golfs love a bit of veg, as Cavette says it's the later pdi's that don't like it.

Skattrd's Bora has been happily sucking down veg juice for ages.

I don't know for sure, the 418 on eBay definitely has a Lucas pump, and biomotors confirms my idea.

Golf 1.9Ds are good on veg, but a bit grim.

It's RAER to find German stuff with Lucas pumps, but they are out there - Polo 1.9D (and the Spanish/Czech equivalents, and van versions) and Mercedes C220D are ones I kow of.

Any PSA diesel (so Peugeot, Citroen, Rover etc) could be Lucas or Bosch. It really is luck of the draw. In my experience, Lucas fuel pumps seem to give slightly better fuel consumption, which added to the lack of faff, makes them worthy of consideration. Veg oil is a bit of a faff, especially in colder months.

It's the misery of a mk3 golf that is putting me off. Despite wanting something that I can run backwards and forwards to work for a tuppence I would still prefer it if I in some way liked the car I was driving. Having a bit of a BL fetish the R8 shape Rovers seemed perfect, being cheap to buy, cheap to insure and somewhat likable, just a shame about the pump.

This is the one that took my fancy locally for just £195:

I might enquire further about the pug. With the sale of the Orion and my much loved Alfa Romeo 156, I should have some cash for something plus enough to stock up on veg when its cheap, with change.

I'm yet to put any veg in my mk3 golf 1.9d, but it's nowhere near as grim as I was expecting, it drives pretty well and isn't really that slow. I'm used to having lines of fast hot hatches etc, but I'm really enjoying this thing. 50+mpg is also nice.

As said a 1.9D Golf should be fine on the veg, but they are incredibly dull, and SLOW. Mk2 Golf GTD if you can find and within budget would be a nicer drive, 1.6 but with a turbo.

VAG's upto the 110bhp 1999 should be good for veg. So maybe a cheap Pissrat or Audi A4/80 would be less miserable than the n/a golf.

I'd investigate the Rovers a bit more, I still want to try an L series myself.

Another option would be a V****all with the Isuzu engine, 1.7TD Cav/Astra or 1.5TD C*rsa.

The l series and the Isuzu engine can be made to go quite quickly with little effort - see Wuv's Rover of doom for inspiration ;)

If you could stretch to a 110bhp VAG, prob £800ish I'd defo recommend them, my boring isn't really slow and driven sensibly gets 60mpg.

Being able to run on veg, filtered motor oil, hydraulic oil and literally whatever else I can get my hands on is the only appeal that a Diesel has to me.

As a general rule I sevearly dislike driving Diesels, My first experience driving one was a Audi A3 1.9 TDI which was slower than cycling and utterly horrid in every possible way - apart from the soft touch plastics - so I was put off them very quickly. I have driven them since and enjoyed the older ones more, just not as much as petrol. The trouble is, running a 2.0 Alfa Romeo along an overcrowded A road with a town at either end for about 200 miles a week does not make me a rich man. Add this to a soon to be decreasing pay packet and my saving to get out of Devon and its ridiculously high house prices and low job count, I know that I need to start making some savings and cutting down on how much I am spending to get to the building where I need to be to get paid by using veg seems to be the best way to do so.

Have you considered LPG instead? I recon that my Audi is the ultimate Mingebag weapon, It's about £40 to fill, and I can get from Leeds to Birmingham on that, It can get classic insurance, so only £150 a year to insure, plus it's a Mahoosive estate.
