New Shite... MAESTRO - LET'S GO!

Cheers gents; it seems a fairly sound old thing although the cold running is utterly shite as I found out this evening; will tinker with it at some point in the near future I think.

I approve of this. What the are 1.6s like then? The 1.3 seems pretty capable as long as you don't mind NEGATIVE ACCELERATION, the bigger lump must make them seem pretty quick I'd imagine?

The 1600 is a pretty nippy thing though at the moment anything more than about half throttle results in either rapid acceleration or lots of revs and no movement. It should go fairly well when it's been looked at, but until then it's being driven in a giffertastic fashion.

Brilliant, takes me back to my Maestro driving days. Looks really tidy as it goes, have you tried the owners forum for parts?

Not yet Billy; it went on Gumtree last Sunday, I promised myself I wasn't buying it and it landed on the driveway late on Friday evening after the missus talked me into it. Still to even sign up to the Monstro forums, though from memory the seatbelts are the same as an LDV so we may have some lying about the shed at work.

It's not a bad little thing though, I was pleasantly surprised at how it drove so it might stay for a while if it turns out to be solid enough.

Irritatingly the brake lights have given up so tomorrow shall be spent tinkering if I bother to get up.

Simple chodular splendour. Well done, bloke.

I have just been told a fine tale of a local geezer who had and still has a 1600 Maestro, owned from nearly new. It is gently falling to bits around the corner from me. Back in the days when such cars were still plentiful, this bloke convinced himself one day that he needed to save money on petrol, so he traded in his 1600 for a 1300, paying the trader about two grand on top of the PX to get the smaller engined car. Then, the same day, he set off with a load in the back and couldn't get up Highgate Hill in third gear, so, later the same day, he went back to the dealer and asked to swap back again. Oh, says the dealer, those 1300s are hard to shift, you know, and now both cars have another owner on the sheet, and there's wear and tear, transaction costs, and all sorts of expenses involved. Give me a grand and we'll swap back. So, the bloke did. I have it from a trusted source that this is a true tale.

Don't ask me about how Princess Di speaks to him through the car's radio.

What a great Mrs you have! 8)

The poor cold running is probably down to the automatic choke (assuming a manual one hasn't already been fitted), they are notoriously shite. Manual conversion kits aren't too hard to find.

That's nice that. Really liking 80's BL stuff at the moment and quite fancy a Maestro or a Montego

That looks great. I was tempted when I saw it on gumtree too but didn't have the space.

Hopefully it'll just take a little bit of fetting to get it running right.

Been poking and prodding the Maestro again today, got the brake lights working and had a look at the clutch but it appears to be at the end of it's adjustment so I've ordered a new clutch for the princely sum of £21. The cold starting issues have been causing me grumpiness but it appears to just idle bloody low when it's cold, it's got the manual choke conversion but it's effect seems to be minimal. Harrupmh.

A colleague of mine has had an eye at the bumper and reckons he can do a pretty acceptable job of sorting out the previous owner's accident damage so it'll get done over the Easter Holidays. Should be looking fairly presentable in not too long at all.

Looks good.

I was surprised how not really shit they were. Mine was the 1.6, but with an auto box. It was quite a civilised drive and I'd defo have another.

Top marks, that looks pretty sound and honest. I'm feeling quite nostalgic now as my parents had one in the same colour on an A plate back in the early nineties, identical to this one.

I remember very little about it apart from rusty wheelarches, an overwhelmingly chocolate brown interior and overheating in summer traffic. By their previous car standards, it was superb.

1983 Maestro? That would have been a Miracle.

They were known at BL dealers as Maelstroms.

One day i might actually get my A reg 1.3 Maestro raod legal or even running!. However engine swap and general tidying of Paddington the Ital to be done first. I'm soaking up all this Maestro love, its making me want to buy this shitty-looking one and tow it home behind my Doblo at 40 mph.

I saw this the other day and was seriously tempted. Back in the day I had a poverty spec Montego and I still miss how crap they were!
