Des Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 OMG! Not acid rain / nuclear fallout / kitten aids Snow claims innocent victim, Don't Panic, Don't Panic. This blue thing: Slid into the arse of my car while parked up, brace yourself now, knocked a little hole in the O/S lamp, broke No. plate, distortion to bumper and rear panel, must have been going a fair lick as shunted the car forward a foot or so up the kerb. I feel bad for the guy, his car is in shite, headlamps hanging out etc. Best get generating a whiplash claim for me and my 4 imaginary kids.
mk1_4dr Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I do hope you don't feel the shunt tomorrow, the symptoms really can take a few hours to develop themselves. Its astounding the difference in damage, I'm guessing it didn't set his airbags off then?
wuvvum Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I've quite often seen that actually - the moving car often seems to come off worse than the stationary one. Not that I'm saying that the difference in build quality between a Zafira and a W126 had nowt to do with it, of course.
Bobthebeard Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Go out and buy all the bread you can! Everyone else seems to be doing it. Feck knows why. Save yourselves!
Bobthebeard Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 We make our own bread. Sorted! We do too.... Panic buying flour and yeast as we speak! Will boil snow if Tesco run out of bottled water. OMGBITOSNOWPANIC etc.
vulgalour Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 put him my way, I've got a Maestro and a ratchet strap that'll set him straight again.
Albert Ross Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 If that IS indeed a W126, best of luck locating an unrotted bumper. Pity about the Zafira... NOT! One less nail.
splatthefat Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 In went out panic buying earlier, but both TESCO and ASDA had sold out of panics.... I'll get me coat
Bobthebeard Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 In went out panic buying earlier, but both TESCO and ASDA had sold out of panics.... I'll get me coat Morrisons still have panics..... Though stocks are running low. Hurry!
fordperv Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 In went out panic buying earlier, but both TESCO and ASDA had sold out of panics.... im sure they still have horse burgers though
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 If that IS indeed a W126, best of luck locating an unrotted bumper. Pity about the Zafira... NOT! One less nail. Hmmm. Insurance claim, £2500 estimate, write off, £2000 payout, £300 bumper - result!!
Skizzer Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 put him my way, I've got a Maestro and a ratchet strap that'll set him straight again.
Station Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Had a rough time today, boss let us out early and managed to get out of leamington in 2 hours - that's 2 miles. On the motorway it was KAOS road was 1 inch thick with Icey snow and my front left tyre revealed itself to be completely bald. Most terrifying experience of my life, driving to next service station to change to spare wheel with the car suddenly jerking left and right before going straight, and touching the brakes locked the wheels up. Then a knocking and grinding noise as the back box mount wasn't tight and exhaust was left trailing along the road, sparks and all. Pulled into hard shoulder which took 10 meters to come to a stop to fix exhaust, while maniacs in audio and bmws were flying past. Next 30 miles was awful but vastly improved with spare on there. Not driving MR2 in this weather again, I'm still a bit shaky now.
Des Posted January 18, 2013 Author Posted January 18, 2013 Actually a ratchet strap would be overkill, I helped the guy push the wings back in to keep the headlamps from falling out, it was about as difficult as squishing an empty beercan in your hand when showing the laydees how hard you are.No airbaggery buggery was sustained, now I think of it, bouncing off my car saved the guy hitting a signpost. He's insured with Morethan, don't know what they're like, but I suppose I'm looking at them writing it off as soon as look at it, just need to think about what happens next time I'm renewing and the brokers ask about any claims, will that affect how muck they skank me for?
Vanny Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 The claim wont as its not your fault, and your not claiming on your insurance, just make sure you declare it. My personal car insurance has the claims from the company car listed (both other party fault) and it made no difference to the cost. Not sure how the Cat D status will impact on the insurance though.
garethj Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 If the insurance company can get some money off you, they will. I had an accident a few years ago which wasn't my fault (it's pretty clear cut when the other car crosses the central reservation to hit you) but the premium still went up. Some twat drove into Mrs_Garethj's Volvo last year, denting the door and driving off. She phoned up to find get an assessor out, ask about how much the excess was and everything, decided not to claim. The insurance premium still went up because she'd informed them of the "crash"
Pillock Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Cat D shouldn't affect the insurance premium, it might affect a payout if it was involved in yet another prang as it's deemed less valuable than an identical one that hasn't been written off.
Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 If your premia increase as a result of an accident that wasn't your fault, it's not your fault and it has to be paid for by the party who was liable for the accident. Obviously, the insurance cartel doesn't want to make much noise about that, but it's contract law at its simplest. They have to put you back in the position in which you'd be if the accident hadn't happened, and I 've been told that they always pay up when threatened with legal action. Of course, IANAL, DYOR and so on.
Morgan84 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 The older Mercs were built like a brick outhouse, but the newer pedestrain friendly crumple zone cars seem to go all wobbly at the slightest impact, and send plastic clips flying out from all angles ! Compare the Zafira to the resident Princess on here,as they were both rear end shunts;the Princess pulled out with a ratchet strap and a Ledbury, but the Zafira is a hell of a lot more sorting out ! There's a lot to be said for older cars being easier to work with

Sounds just like the normal trip to, and back from, the MOT station then.

I think whoever told you that story must have heard it third hand or were missing some key facts. Insurance companies always win in the end. It their job. Des Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 Car is to be collected next Friday to be repaired by Morethans own workshop, and a local rental company will drop off a car for me.Now just let's see what happens in reality, I'll keep an open mind, the car needs a lamp and the bumper repairing or replacing, and the rear panel straightening / painting, I doubt it's viable but I'm not an assessor so who knows?I phoned a few companies I'm insured with asking if a no fault claim will affect NCD, but unsuprisingly a certain lack of straight answers, Cherish, who cover the Merc said no prob for them but others may differ. I wonder if I can deny making a claim, I haven't asked anything of anyone, I've merely verbally accepted Morethans offer to repair my car, I aint signing nuffink right.

Not driving MR2 in this weather again, I'm still a bit shaky now. +1 on the MR2 vs. snow -I had an MR2 back in 2010. I bought it about three days before that massive snowstorm we had that lasted a month or so, back tyres were nearly bald so I was sliding all over. In the end I dumped it at home and borrowed my old Mk3 Escort which coped perfectly. I then sold the MR2 and it stopped snowing. Bloody thing.

I think whoever told you that story must have heard it third hand or were missing some key facts. No. The story is 100% straight, but I was too daft to specify that I was referring to the insurer PAYING the claim, not the one providing your cover. So, somebody drives into your car. Their insurer covers the cost of repairs. Three months later, you renew your insurance (with NCD intact, of course). You declare the non-fault claim to your insurer, and the renewal quote goes up by £200. The accident has increased your premium, ergo you have a perfectly valid reason to ask the third-party insurer to cover your loss. Of course, they are not going to be very proactive about it, and you'll have to threaten them with legal action. But you'll get there in the end.
Des Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 The bodyshop have called, the guy said as the bumper alone would cost £2K, repair would be unviable, get my car back on Tuesday and I should be getting an offer from Morethan of the cars value, and apparently they won't deduct my cars scrap value. Now let's see what happens.
