Just rescued one from the crusher. Missing a few bits remarkably rust free, 33k on the clock, engine sweet

remarkably rust free

Yeah I said that about a month before starting the so far 7 month welding saga on my Lancia. Still, in my eyes anyone who has owns a Lancia is a winner, also...

I know this isn't the blue forum, but a Lancia Beta Coupe that was almost a cube, we need to see this.

EDIT: Damn, beaten to it and with the same picher as well.

Some guy I knew bought a visually immaculate Beta once! We never seemed to be able to find it after a light mist one morning...

This was all that sat in it's parking space.

This.

Was.

An.

Epic.

Mistake.

You took it from its natural habitat. You committed a clear violation of species-appropriate car-husbandry.

In shiter terms:

Well done!

Sounds interesting! Wheres Betaboy2.0 nowadays? He's DA_MAN when it comes to betas.

Beta boy 2.0 seems to have gone into hiding post shitefest. I can only assume it was all too much for him

Posted

Betaboy2.0 was probably been busy sorting the NEC show. And playing with Gammas.

So, which model is it? 1300/1600/2000, Pre-facelift/Facelift/Facelift 2? Or even a HiFi? Carb/IE or VX even.

What do you want to know...? Pichers please!

I've have had two Saloons and a Trevi in recent years. Still have a shed of bits and pieces, factory manuals, special tools, buckets of Jenolite.

Best join BETABOYS today

If you can sort out any mechanical woes first, I will have it off you at a knock down price when the tiny amount of welding turns out to be much much much more than expected.

Also, nice to see you are still alive.

Good to see you're still around Scooters. Do you do wheels and stuff with the blasting or just whole cars?

i bought this earlier this year , impulse buy its a really nice car but i choose my cortina over it every time. so for that reason im out! 1st bit of nice weather nxt year will make a proper attempt to sell!

Beta coupes are FIT AS FUCK. One of the few cars I would give up my Celica for. I need pictures to satisfy my rust fuelled fetish

Also, good to see you're still around Scoots, although I'm sure you must be a little bit poorly considering you saved a SsangYong Musso

Sorry, but when Lancia are forced to buy them back off of customers as they started rusting at 3 months old, something must've been up.

I think Lancia managed to beat BL in the race for rust competition!

Wasn't that just the saloons rather than the coupés?

TBH, my first post was a joke (regarding the one rusty bolt left over).

My last post was what I've read in various historical reading.

The other way to think about it is that any car that's prone to rusxting that has survived more than 30 years must be a freak that was painted at least half-decently.

Aye, but autoshite is all about people that love the unloved (or unlovable), so wind yer neck in a bit, eh?

(That being said, as far as I'm concerned you can pour any amount of scorn on those fucking awful Xsara Picasso bastard carrier things though, hehe!)

Was it not just the subfame mounts that were rusting? I know the myth goes that the whole car rusted but all cars rusted in those days. I think the specific problem was rot in the subframe mounts.

*EDIT* Yes it was:

Nice one Scooters, looking forward to seeing this! At the end of that video, "They do point to the anti-corrosion guarantee, introduced in this country on April 1st" :D

Yes, but a 1024 pixel-wide stale joke

Best chop your Cavalier in for a Beta then and experience the myth first-hand then :P

Yes, but only on the 1st series cars, up to 1975. The subframe mount design was soon changed. All for want of a couple of drain holes...

My Dad had a series 2, in 1979. He had rustier Vauxhalls.

I seem to remember virtually the same 'joke' done on top gear a few years ago!

Posted

It was Clarkson himself on one of his DVD/VHS releases, 'Unleashed on Cars' in 1996

Played for earlier on TG in 1994

Later in 2010

Never mind all that. Scooters, pichers please!

So what was the recall for? They seem to be suggesting its the subframe mounts in that news article or am I getting the wrong end of the stick because of my own experience with them?

ITV news explains - watch this, it's good:

So I would say that it was a mount area problem which due to the press snowballed into everyone believing they completely disintegrate.

I had seen that. *

*EDIT* Yes it was:

My questions about F4A's point about the subframe mounts only rusting on pre 75 cars (I presumepre 1975 design as my car was a 1976 and was suffering - no drain holes). The news article does seem to suggest it is the rear mountings, which is what I had always thought it had been.
