Cheap Auto achieved...sort of

Well after much frustration of being outwitted by fast moving African exporters I very nearly bought a 1991 Golf 1.6 Driver Auto for £700. The car had full years mot, no rust but needed a couple of tyres and back box. It had 65K miles and is still on ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1991-H-VW-VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-1-6-DRIVER-AUTO-MK2-ONLY-65000-MILES-AUTOMATIC-/251163147190?item=251163147190&ViewItem=&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:GB:1123&nma=true&si=zV%2FwBK43L8bVD6IusWnSSQT8vDY%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Front wing had a ding and there was evidence of it being a learner drivers car (square patch of adhesive on bonnet) and one headlamp was smashed.

It was sensible, it was within 20 miles of home it had parental approval (who were prepared to stump up cash to see me moble again), so all was well in the world?

It had a few of the usual Mk2 golf issues like the rear wiper park wouldn't work and the factory steel sunroof opened OK but would jam on the air deflector when trying to close. The thing is I sat in it. I sat it in and I knew exactly what it would be like. I knew the rear wiper wouldn't park. I knew the seats would be like cloth covered cinder blocks and that I think was the trouble.

So instead I looked deep into the autoshiter in my heart, got home and bought a 1986 1.4 Volvo 340 DL Automatic , sight unseen from eBay. To add to the mix the Volvo is based near Cheddar Gorge the otherside of the country from me. My Parents went ape shit (and I don't mean like a rough piaggo either), but on sight of photo's of the car have agreed its slightly sensible.

So to the Volvo 340. Well its got tax and test, 5 new tyres, a new exhaust, its only done 40K miles genuine, full service history, its had genuine new Volvo vario belts fitted and answers to the name of Lulu.

Apparently the Milkfloat type noise is normal on a vario, plus it will go backwards as fast as forwards!

That's really nice. Did not realise they were still making the Variomatic ones that late.

My god. He's actually bought a decent motor! I await some hilarious adventures that are inevitable with one of your cars.

Yes the current Owners live near Cheddar and are a young couple, they seemed really nice genuine people and have loved that car. I think you can tell from the amount of work they have done on it.

All I need to do now is work out how to get to Highbridge & Burnham station cheaply from Chorleywood. :-)
