1979 Renault 17 Gordini Restoration

Just came across this superb restoration of a rare Renault Gordini.

I bought this car in California on April 2012. An extensive restoration took place at my shop located in Miami were my friend Alberto Cordero, a former mechanical engineer from Renault, retired after 42 years working with the company, comes to help me with the restoration of the car. He was the chief mechanic of Juan Manuel Fangio a famous Argentinean race driver who won 5 times the F1 championship and Alberto was at the 84 hs of Nurburgring with the first Renault model derived from the AMC rambler named “Torino 380 W†who gets the third place in that race on 1969.

The car was abandoned in a yard and the last registration proving the car was running was back in 1997.

Being a child of the 70's I always thought the 17's were lovely looking cars, but as I get older I now actually prefer the slightly less fussy styling of the 15 !

Either way those US spec bumpers really ruin the looks of the car as did most US spec bumpers of that time. Bloody American safety do-gooders :x

Same here

But... ignore the girders and that 17G is a thing of beauty (even if the rear stripes are upside-down...) and a hell of an achievement, considering where it is 8)

what a stunning motor (other than wank yank bumpers) My mates mum had a 15 when we were kids and I've always remembered the weird cable set up for opening the rear side windows..

That is rather special. Extra points for awkward yank bumpers and steelies that make me think of Romania.

However, I have recently learnt from a popular television programme that the work could've been done in 2 weeks for £2000.
