I'm going to visit Aberdeen.

Have some equipment to deliver to Aberdeen, 500 bastard miles, so will do an overnight there. Can anyone tell me if it's the kind of place that would be worth taking out a few days to explore, or should I hammer a socket the hell out of it.

Look out for the four-headed, man-eating haddock fish-beast.

It depends what you're looking for really. I like Aberdeenshire but I'm not that keen on Aberdeen itself. One thing I will say though. Even if the alternative is sleeping on a park bench during a Buckfast sale do not stay or eat in the Mill of Mundurno Premier Inn at Bridge of Don.

Leave Tayne out of this.

If you're not in a rush (and fancy a 100+ mile detour) then a run over to Inverness and a trip down the A82 is rather scenic ... it's much much slower than the A9 though

Via the A93/A939 of course - they're even better than the A82 because they're not a rolling roadblock behind a cyclist.

Aberdeen is OK, some decent pubs and the people are alright as well.....I enjoy going there and hope to be there during November 8)

Balvenie is my Number 1 dram. Still got some of my birthday supply left!

The NE looks like a grand place to visit!

Keep going west (sort of) and you'll reach the bleak mountains of the Cairngorms National Park and the ski resorts of The Lect and Glenshee, though I don't expect there will be much snow for a few months yet...

There's been fresh now on the top of Cairngorm for a couple of weeks.

I quite like Aberdeen despite having been there in January.

Bring a warm hat.

I'll second what Tayne said; I loved living there, but I'm struggling to think of much in the touristy way. At least the city itself is quite small really (most of the housing developments of the last 40 years or so, have been created as settlements out in the countryside), so you don't get the sprawl of Glasgow, and it doesn't suffer Edinburgh's nausea inducing tartan tat overload.

Go and see Union Terrace Gardens, before some rich knob concretes over it. From there, it's possible to wander thro' the old lanes and alleys under and around Union Street, and marvel at how they effectively built a two-storey city centre. Kind of.

I don't think I'd try surfing there, tho; I know people do it, but I well remember the incidences of hypothermia, frostbite and unpleasant human-chemical interfaces that beset the uni's surfing club  . Better maybe to nip down the road to Stonehaven, and try the heated outdoor pool. It's a bloody weird (and frankly almost Scandinavian) thing to do. Near there, Dunnottar Castle (Tayne's pic 'Pathway') is well worth a visit, especially the guided tours. Mostly 'cos the tour guides delight in emphasising the grisly nature of various bits of the place.

Royal Deeside is indeed fantastic for a spot of fishing, but be very careful of the permit situation; I ended up on the wrong end of a shotgun once (the other end being taken by a gamey who was either on his period, or had just had a humour-ectomy) near Banchory. If fishing, keep your permit handy; if walking, stick to the paths.

Other than that...go for a drive! I was up to Turriff and back, all weekend, and lost count of the fantastic views and autoshite/agrishite I saw.

Thought of something possibly shite-worthy; Grampian Transport Museum. Not been myself, but it's only a short way out of the city, and there's a train preservation thing out there too.

I was dreading the trip, but quite up for it now, looks a good place.

Tayne, you are the Aberdeen tourist board and I claim my £5.

The Rob Roy Caravan Park is always worth an explore.

Have fun in Aberdeen hope it is drier when you there!. Can be expensive up there. Worked out of Stoney a year or two ago during the bad Winter. Aberdonians are friendly enough. Nice part of Scotland.

First of all may I say the Gemstone of Medina has no idea what he is referring to.

Aberdeen is a charming town with a wonderful seaside, wide variety of stores & dining places, excellent night life & is very centrally based for some really wonderful castles. For example, Dunottar castle, Stonehaven (approximately 17 miles), Fyvie castle (approximately 30 miles), Tolquhon castle (approximately 35 miles), Drum castles (approximately 20 miles) to name just a few.

There are many awesome recreational areas which are readily available by bus from the primary road.

I recommend you examine out Aberdeen vacationer details center @ 23 Nation Street, Aberdeen.

Aberdonians are a friendly bunch & I am sure you will appreciate it. Have fun!

As opposed to Mancunians, who are vicious bastards who dislike having a site they once loved getting spammed by a semi-intelligent spam bot.

I do not appreciate your posts. Fuck off, die, and most of all...........have fun!
