There's a new red thing on my drive! (Sierra Content)

Some of you may have already seen this on RR, but I thought I'd share it here.

I've just "inherited" this 1.8 LX from an elderly relative...it hasn't been on the road since December '11.

Picked it up on Sunday and gave it a clean... :)

So...as you can see, it has true shite potential...some interior bits have dropped off and there's some grot to deal with (along with that nasty driver's door lock), but hey, according to Ford's marketing people back in the day, it's Man and Machine in perfect harmony!. :D

The tailgate leaks, so the spare wheel well is a bit orange. It could also really do with a damn good mopping (rather than T-Cut and Turtlewax). ;)

It drives OK, although there's a nasty vibration at over 40mph - feels like the wheels need balancing. However, I want to replace the steels with period Ford alloys - anyone got anything for sale? ;)

Things I realised when I got there/on the way/when I got home...

I need to sort the non-existent driver's door lock out

Sort the rust on the boot lip (not in photographs) and the OS/R wheelarch/sill end

Driver's electric window doesn't work

Sort the missing internal driver's door pull

Radio doesn't work

Needs a new battery

Petrol gauge doesn't work

Sort the tailgate leak

Service it

It'll need some door rubbers/seals here and there

Errrr...that's it so far...

:)

Bloody hell, that's come up a treat! Should get a decent runabout out of that for only a little work, top bombing!

Obv. though you have one job to do before tackling wheelarch, door lock and even the battery: Please frisbee those wheeltrims across a hedge several miles from your house, making sure to stamp on them a bit first.

That would look lovely on the 'Azura' spec alloy wheels which would be period for its age,and to have a period radio casette would be a 2007 or similar model, though a early MK1 Mondeo,MK4 escort of MK3 Fiesta 2006 model type would look perfect. With the missing bits reinstated it will be a lovely motor, which is getting slowly into classic territory behind the Cortina's

For the true period look, you need to bend that door straight around the lock, and then cover it up with a pound shop stick-on lock surround. :D

Will keep you posted as to progress...

But Cavette...you're right...those trims WILL be friebee'd!

Nice one. I do like these. Was the spoiler a late attempt to keep folk interested in buying them with the Mondeo on the way?

Posted

I think the spoiler was just an option. I had one on a G reg 2.3 diesel saph.

WOW! Great stuff UP. I know you've contacted me about this before. I'm still on the look out for some period Ford alloys for you. I did come across these at my mates garage:

I think these came from a Fiesta. I think they have the same PCD.

Not entirely sure exactly how much he wants for them, I think around the £60/£80 mark, I think there are a set of 5 or something, but if you are interested they are in Cradley Heath, alternitavely I can deliver to you as you are around the Midlands area.

I like the Sierra mats, where did you get them from? I think the rear mats might be the wrong way around, left mat in right footwell, etc... Sorry, but I notice these things

The owner used to work for a Ford dealership back in the '80's/early '90's, so the mats may well have come from there.

IIRC, they purchased the car when it was a around a year old.

Re. Wheels - cheers! I may have a lead on a reasonably-priced (or possibly free!) set - will keep you posted! :)

I'm going to need some Ford Aporto Red (XSC2489) in aerosol form (ideally by this weekend) - can anyone suggest a (reasonably-priced) source? I think Holts still do the paint.

Posted

Get some mixed up by a paint factor, the 'accessory shop' aerosols are wank - 50% propellant. 49.9% solvent, 0.01% paint

Try your local Ford dealership or Halfords;the genuine one stands a fair chance of being a close match

There is a bloke on ebay at the moment breaking lots of Sierra's. He might have some appropriate bits. I can't do the link but it was under the 'classic car' section and his ad featured a field full of Sierra's (make's sense I suppose).

Nice car and well worth doing the various little jobs.

Looks good! I suspect its lost its original bumpers at some point as any K platers bar the absolute rock bottom base model had body coloured jobs i think. They were made out of eggshells though so no suprises they've long since gone

A free jelly mould! some people have all the luck! :D

Those wheels Luxo found are off a late Fiesta Mk4 (2000-1), or a Focus Mk1.

Posted

Them alloy wheels are off a 99> Fiesta Zetec etc model, and I think the eBay seller is called Sierra shack
