Meat wagon

Spotted today in West Cornwall, could this be the only mobile Butchers van left in active service? I had a chat with the enthusiastic owner who told me he'd bought the van quite a few years ago from the original owner who apparently paid £23,000 for it new in '84. It still works 7 days a week all year through but maybe for not much longer as the owner is near retirement and it's becoming a bit of a challenge keeping the old van on the road, and he's only getting 9 to the gallon out of her

I purchased some of his homemade burgers that will be going on the old barby shortly :D

Oh wow! That is brilliant. Yeas, you gotta go for it.

It must not be allowed be put out to pasture as we will never see the like of that again.

Is the 2300 petrol really that bad

Fantastic! For years and years, Stanleys in Staveley had a looooooong Mercedes van for mobile meat and veg but it has long since been replaced by a new Iveco or similar so it's not the last mobile butcher still in service at least.

Lots of similar mobile shops butchers/grocers/bank in the remoter parts of Scotland, especially the islands. Well, a few anyhow. Nice van :D

I saw that van at the weekend! I was camping at the Cornwall VW owners club jamboree and it was doing the rounds at the campsite, it looked great!

That's truly superb. I suggest you make him an offer!

Hey DW, you should go and have a butchers at it too, and maybe go into joint ownership. If you decide that its not for you I am sure someone will buy your steak.

You should lower it though, maybe chop the springs although I am sure you would get a lot of beef about that on here.

9 mpg ! That either needs a overdrive or converting to diesel !

My dad's cousin runs a butchers shop in Parson Drove, and they do a butchers' round every day of the week, they use VW transporter vans.

My dad used to do a butchers round as well with a CF 2.3 petrol, the consumption must have been totally horrific.

Having owned a 2300 CF, I don't remember it being that bad on fuel. Guess if you're pottering about going house-to-house and carrying a butcher's shop with you, the mpg will suffer a bit.

I work for a commercial vehicle bodybuilders. One of my latest design projects was a butcher's lorry on a DAF LF. OK these days they're the ones that set up in markets and shout out their wares Delboy style, but it looks a nice thing now it's all stickered up. I've got some photos of vans from the 60s and 70s and some of them are butchers vans, J4s, Commers and the like. I'll dig them out.
