RichardMoss Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Grand cherokee won't be tail happy in the wet,its permanent 4x4 .It depends upon which transfer box is fitted. SelecTrac is RWD unless you select 4WD, but QuadraTrac is permanent 4WD (and is prone to trashing one of the viscous couplings ($450 worth of parts).
ayrshirelad Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 We had a cherokee for a wee whiley as a tow car and general every day car. 4L Auto. Was good while it lasted. Did need to replace radiator and front brake caliber but got me money out of it. Just check for corrision underneath. Thats what killed mine in the end sadly!
Des Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Get two, wait a few months for OMG snow armagedon and sell one for double = free car.

eddyramrod Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 You need talking out of buying an american car? If I'm in the room, you are definitely in the wrong place, lol. You know you want to, go on, do it! What else are you going to buy to do the same job, at the same price? Just ask Pete-M. In fact if you search his postings you'll probably find almost everything you need to know. Good luck.

The VC in the Quadratrac on mine failed and it was cheaper/easier to convert to Selectrac.
Ian Nexus Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Many of our Grand Cherokees here where specified with RWD only
fiatdaft Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 Seeing as it is the uk here,i was talking about uk market grand cherokee's.
Justin Case Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 Last February's Classic American had a feature on buying a Grand Cherokee. According to them, the first generation ZJ (1994 -1998) indeed had a choice of Selectrac (part-time) or Quadratrac (full-time) 4WD, but they didn't mention any particular problems with either systems, only beware of dodgy autoboxes, and diesels. The VM2500 lump has the unique feature of being a boat engine as opposed to the boat anchor often found under Ford and BL bonnets and has no less than four cylinder heads (but probably less than four cylinder head gaskets intact ) The later WJ series (1999-2004) was the one with the Quadratrac II system that has the VC problems, in fact if there are any rumbling noises that aren't coming from the engine, walk. So, I fear that not only have I failed to talk you out of any early one, I have talked myself into one
gadgetgricey Posted August 15, 2012 Author Posted August 15, 2012 Thanks for everyone's responses on this, was looking really promising/keen until I rang up my Insurance company My logic had been that I should be able to get one on a classic policy as over 15 years old, just to use at weekends or when the weather was bad. Turns out my Insurance company have changed the criteria, and this would now fall into a 20 year bracket. Will try another couple of companies over the next few days, but this would be a second vehicle and My no claims is on my daily driver. However I like a challenge... Thanks again - Dave -
RichardMoss Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 The later WJ series (1999-2004) was the one with the Quadratrac II system that has the VC problems:The Quadratrac in the ZJ also suffers from VC problems - frequently. Check out www.jeepforum.com for more info.

RichardMoss Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 My ZJ had a knackered QuadraTrac VC when I got t, it was ceased and easier to fit a SelecTrac transfer box than to repair the original.
