Have you always been a 'shiter? Newest car you owned?

For the first 15 years after passing my test I always bought sub a grand cars (on the proviso I could always buy them outright without finance). 1973 Mini, then 10 year old Fiesta, and 7 year old mk5 Escort. In 2007 I made the error of buying a 52-plate Mondeo with a bank loan and only just finished paying it off last year, despite selling the car in 2008. My justification at the time was I decided to ‘treat myself’. Some treat

Since then I’ve revelled in returning to the sub a grand category and enjoying every one of them!

I'm a believer cars under a grand too. No bank loans needed and they're reasonably disposable.

Newest car I've owned is the current 2003 Pug 307 7-seater. Purely out of necessity... Paid €2700 cash last August. It's shit rather than shite though.

The newest car I've ever owned was my 1994 Rover 214Si, which I bought from a general dealer near Canterbury in 2000 for £2995 when it had just turned six years old. I wish that I'd bought the 1991 Volvo 460GLT on sale at said dealer for the same price instead

The most recent car I've owned so far is TV2, which was 12 years old when I bought it in April 2009 :)

Current car (99 disco 2) is the newest I've ever had. I'm a believer in a car's for life so one day it will become a shitter unless some giffer writes it off first. I'd have gone for a disco 1, but too hard to find one with a floor now.

Oh dear, I should probably just get my coat......I've bought two brand new cars in my life, although in my defence they were for my business.

Beyond that, I tend to go for the 10-20 year old age, particularly recently when it's been much easier to get cars of that age that are still in good nick. I remember when I first started driving (early 80s) and the cars I would buy back then were mostly 5-7 years old but most of them were totally fucked by today's standards.

Just done a quick bit of mental arithmetic and the average age off all the cars I've ever owned is just under 10 years old , but since 2000 the average age has been just over 12.

Newest car I've actually owned was the 2001 Mondeo Zetec. Bought for £200, deemed to be too far gone underneath, alloys sold for £20 a pop, still got the stereo and code, weighed in for £185. In terms of age at the time of ownership my Hyundai Accent (P842 RGG) which IIRC I scrapped before it's tenth birthday.

Newest car for me is my current 2000 Volvo S80 bought last month, 12yrs old. The '99 VW boring I bought last year, also at 12yrs old. Both diesel and both bought specifically for work use, and touch wood, both done well. I've so far put 35k on the boring and 4k on the Volvo without any real problems.

I know they're not really shiters, but both were under a grand. My thing is that they're still worth what I paid for them and I honestly doubt anything newer would be any better/more reliable.

I think I've only bought three cars that had a four-figure price, the newest was a two year old Honda Civic back in the summer of 2000, at trade price (just over £5.5k) from the local Honda dealer. Nice enough car, but dull dull dull. Sold it after nine months, got £4300 for it, banked four grand and sunk the remainder into a 1984 Audi 80 quattro. Much better. Apart from buying a five-year-old Accord in 2004 (which I kept for two years), and a company car for 10 months back in 2006/7, the rest of the cars I've owned (that makes a total of 27 I think) have been shite.

Every so often I find myself browsing eBay ads for three-year-old ex-lease execs, then realise the money saved is much better served paying off my mortgage more quickly. My wife grins and bears the Avensis, but I know she'd much rather have a MINI Clubman given the choice

I bought a five-year-old Volvo S40 1.6 in 2006. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was hateful, but it was so impossibly dull that I almost never used it. I sold it on a few months later and lost £600.

The most recent car I've owned was the 607, which was on an 02 plate. I actually managed to turn a profit on that one, albeit a small one.

I've also bought a total of three brand new Chinese motorbikes, although one of them never actually got registered as I couldn't get the paperwork sorted. The first was a Xinling XL50 QTB which was one of those generic Chinese small-wheeled 50cc scooters that you still see millions of today. It was on an 05 plate and was the first brand new vehicle I'd ever bought - I was so proud. I was a bit less proud when the keyway in the top of the forks wore out after 350 miles and the handlebars gained about an inch of play. I "fixed" it with electrical tape and Araldite and sold it on. I then bought a 125cc scooter which was better, although the carb was shit so I could never get it to idle properly. The other one was a 200cc "sports motorcycle" which was basically an old CB200 single with a cheap plastic fairing - that's the one I never got registered, although I might have accidentally borrowed the number plate off the scooter a couple of times and taken it for a quick spin.

I won't be making the mistake of buying a Chinese bike again in the near future, and I don't have any particular desire to own anything newer than the Rover 400, which does pretty much everything I need a car to do and cost me £300.

The newest car I've owned was a 5 year old Megane (mk1 facelift) that my dad gave me because the trade in offers he was getting were so bad. I liked it a lot for the first year or so but then mechanical issues started to cost me a fortune, an L reg pug 205 arrived via freecycle and I ended up giving the Renault to a friend after failing to sell it.

Car wise everything else has been at least 10 years old.

Newest car I've owned would have been my second (roadworthy) one, 1981 Lada 1200 that was 7 years old at the time.

In 2003 I bought a '98/R Escort Gti for £12k under it's original price, it was and still is the most expensive car I've ever bought at £3300, it was a lovely car and ate up motorway miles, I've had a 99/V Xantia, but that was 11 years old and shagged by the time I'd got it, "one careful owner, and one second hand car dealer driving it like a cunt for 3 months"

Just had a thought. My P reg Lada Riva I had in 2004 would only have been 8 years old. Making it the newest car I've ever owned. No fucking way! I've been telling everyone the MG is. I certainly never considered it new, in the same way I do my ZR.
