Similar vein to the first car and daily shitter threads got me wondering if running crap old cars was in our blood or justa recent phenomenon. I started with 60s cars purely because I liked them not through any kind of economy drive or anything and the more modern cars I drove initially weren't particularly crappy or chosen to be making a statement, just around 10 to 12 years old for cheapness.

I had a brief foray into "modern car" territory with a Rover 414 that I bought at five years old but the depreciation was horrendous even though I certainly had my money's worth.

For me, running the "anti-cars" we all love is a fairly recent realisation I think, certainly within the last 8 years or so. How about the rest of you?

The newest car I've ever owned is an 80,000-mile 1999 (T-reg.) Vauxhall Vectra 2.5 V6 'Arctic', bought a couple of years ago for £225.

I drove it once to check it ran properly, then angle-ground the slam panel off to rip out its engine to fit to my 1994 Calibra (the Calibra's engine was OK, but it needed a new cambelt and had a couple of rattly hydraulic tappets... plus the Vectra's engine had covered about 30,000 fewer miles).

I stripped a load of spares out of the Vectra and still got £150 for the remains when I weighed it in. Win!

I've never owned a car that was newer than 8 years old, although with motorbikes I once owned a brand new Kawasaki KMX 125 and a 2-year old Yam XJ900F. The Kwak was ace but I was glad to be rid of the Yam

For me, a car is rated on looks, health and finally cost, usually in that order. I don't really find new cars appealing on the whole with the exception of one or two models, unlike shite which has a larger number of models with styling queues I prefer. If I could have afforded it, I would probably have bought a Rover 75 estate when new, but that's the closest to wanting a new car I've ever really come and at the time I think it would have been first car territory, so you can imagine just how expensive that would have been!

I think the newest car I have owned was probably about six years old at the time, and was possibly a Vectra C I had in 2010. You'll be happy to know that I desperately wanted to like it but myriad stupid f*ck*ng sensor faults drove me up the wall.

Having said that I think one of the Kas I binned a few years back was possibly only four years old at the time, but whatever it was it was depolluted on the back of the truck then sent straight over the bridge.

My newest car has been a brand new 53 plate Renault Clio Dynamique :? Back in 2004 I thought It would be a great idea to treat myself to a nice new car that i could keep for years and that would save us money over time, After popping into the local Renault dealer we saw this Clio on special offer with free air con and electric sunroof and 0% APR and low monthly payments so ordered it.

Unfortunately I ordered a 1.2 and it was hateful, the slowest thing ever, it wasn't big enough, things kept breaking on it and then me and the misses bought a house and couldn't afford the payments as well as a mortgage anymore so a year later and 10000 miles we sold it and lost a fortune.

After that i went back to older cars again as where less grief!

I've only paid over £1000 for a car twice and it was a disaster both times. I was on something like my 17th car before the total purchase price cracked four figures.

Newest car would be a five year old Escort in 2001. Worst moneypit I've owned by a long way.

I've been into shite from the moment I first moved to England about 12 years ago and realised just how cheap used cars were outside of Greece (where cars had always been taxed to buggery, artificially inflating their prices). Newest car I've ever owned was a 1996 Xantia in 2002, bought for a grand with no history but a genuine-looking 43k on the clock. Kept it for about 9 months and, after failing to find a buyer for it and wanting to go away for 4 months, ended up giving it away to a mate.

First car owned was a shite Fiesta Mk2, because I couldn't afford 'owt else. That got scrapped and I got my first 2CV - they've been a constant since then, but they were very much seen as shite curiosities when I started out with them. First one cost me £650.

Owned a Skoda 105 at one point. Bought for £150 with a knackered starter ring gear. Never did get that fixed. Then I reached 18 and mistakenly thought that finance was a good idea. Small loans got me more 2CVs but then I managed to get £1600 out of the Halifax, so I bought my first BX at the age of 21. Still on the depreciation curve! Showing how clever I was, six months later I chopped it in for £650 against a brand new Daewoo Matiz (1999 T). The things we do when we're young...

It got worse. After 18 months, I chopped that in for a Subaru Impreza Sport, binned it, then chopped the remnants in against a Peugeot 306DTurbo. That owed me about £10k once all the finance was taken into account! I've not bought a car on finance since.

Sold the Pug and replaced it with an Isuzu Trooper Mk1. Decided that was crap, so sold it for only slightly less than it owed me and bought an Audi 100 on a D-plate. This really marked the start of my proper Shite-ownership. It cost me £350IIRC and was ace. Loved the 5-pot warble. Since then, I've been firmly on a shite-diet. The Audi was replaced by the world's shonkiest BX 16v, which covered 4000 miles in eight frantic weeks. That was swapped for a 'bubble' Rover 414, which had a nice ride but was otherwise a bit disappointing. My wife hated it so much that we flogged it and bought the Mini. I was running a Maestro 1.3L about that time I think.

Occasionally, I buy something that's actually nice. A Rover 3500 P6B (cost me a fortune, but I was earning a fortune at the time) showed me how not to do it, so I wallowed in shite for a while before scraping enough cash together to buy the A90 Westminster. I bought a good car for once and banged it through an auction when we moved to get back most of my purchase price. The Land Rover V8, Reliant Scimitar and Range Rover are my most expensive recent (past 18 months) purchases and I managed to not lose too much money on them (actually made some on the Landy!). Skint again now so it's shite all the way!

So, the newest car I've owned was brand new. The Maverick is the only car I own at the moment that's too young for classic insurance (1996 N plate). I've discovered that shite motoring can be full of win. There are an awful lot of 'crap' cars out there that really aren't crap. However, there are some that are...

Outside of company cars or cars that my company leased the newest I've ever had was a 4 year old kangoo pezz powered green heap of hatefulness.....but it was the only vehicle I could fit into with my halo frame on, once the neck was healed I traded it for a 5 year old Pug Partned van........fantastic vehicle for 18 months until it becamea complete twat.............forever cementing my opinion that French cars are shite................outside of that pair all my stuff has been 10+ years old when I have bought them

My newest car ever owned was an '89 Trabant - bought in '99

although the NEWEST I ever owned was an '82 Cavalier 4 door in that disturbingly mellow pale green.

I paid £3,000 & an Allegro for that in early '85.

Sold it a couple of years later for £1400 & learned an expensive lesson that has never been forgotten.

Newest car I owned was my C-reg Fiat 126: first registered in December 1985, bought by me for £350 in August 1991, taken off the road with gearbox trouble in August 92 and scrapped in 93/94.

Never owned a car that wasn't at least 10 years old at the time of purchase. In fact I've only owned on car that was 10 years old (K reg Citroen AX way back in 2002)

The newest car I've owned is 1967, my Anglia which I've currently got.

I've just not felt the need to go for anything newer. My first car in 1997 was a 1961 Ford Prefect which just seemed to make sense. £650. Practically the same engine as a 957cc Fiesta except free tax and the insurance was about half and the spares cost peanuts. It was a bit of an old badly-restored MOt-dodging bodger so I've never felt too bad about writing it off, but I replaced it with my Anglia which I've still got. While I was doing some restoration work on the Anglia I had a barn-find '54 Pop 103E that I left looking as-found on the outside, then I had my ratty looking T that was at the RR gathering last year.

None of mine are shiters as such, but none of them have depreciated and none of them have been money pits. The T cost me a bit getting the front end done because it was something I couldn't do at home, but with free tax, £110 fully comp and no depreciation, practically anything newer would have cost me more. One annoyance is that the value of the Anglia has flown up which means I have to garage it for the insurance. I guess it's inevitable for anything that age, but accelerated due to the Retro Ford fackin Zetec scene.
