I was looking at that Almera as it didn't sell on ebay for £200. I could live with replacing the starter motor but the clutch sounds like a bit more of a ball ache.

Looks pretty decent actually, that one.

Or a Xantia I put in the Ebay thread last week, £215 and 5 hours to go....

If you were doing the Kelso to Berwick-Upon-Tweed Co-op charity fun run for 20 L&B you'd still need a back up car for the Laguna.

one of only two things that have made me chortle today......nice one

Bit of an update on this today. We've possibly done a deal with a local dealer to plunder their "too shit to trade" part exchange section. Hopefully I'll know more on what's available towards the end of the week.

So it looks like we've blagged a Honda Accord. Probably a 1.8 pez of enormous boringness, which will no double make it to spain without much effort.. The deal does however mean I might end up with my mug in the Daily Record doing the double thumbs up in front of a badly decorated Honda.

My mum's Accord 1.8 goes quite well, it has a crashingly hard ride compared to the French shit I'm used to though (including that Xantia up there).

Posted

is it that red sticker bombed accord that was on ebay? if it is i saw it last month in scumdee tescos.

Posted

I know the one you mean but that's not it. The garage is basically going to give us the first decent old Honda Accord they get in. I'm hoping for a nice old Rover 600 style one.

Posted

These old Rondas are OK, you'll die of boredom before you wear one out so long as it's not too rusty.

I once bagged a nice leather-lined Rover 618i for all of £350. Spent zero pounds on it in the 6 months or so I had it, and got £475 for it afterwards! :D

Almost made up for the 600 turbo I chucked in the bin a year earlier with the usual Rover problem....

Just about anything feels crashingly hard after a green blooded Citroen.

We have a car! I feel a bit bad as it's a stonker but not really exciting enough to worry too much about.

It's a 1.6 Honda Civic Aerodick. It's a later one so it's V-Tec YO! Only 68k on it with leather and aircon. The bodyworks tidy too and it runs sweet, loads of go for a little 1.6 although you need to work it to get it going. The rev limiters 7k, just like bollox's FSO!

I recon it might get a bit revvy on the motorway and the discs are fugged giving mega wheel wobble but the chances of it making it are in it's favour I recon. It's also got a pretty big boot for all the charity stuff we're taking with us.

If the discs are going to be cheap to change I'm gonna do it as I don't fancy 2000 miles with shitty brakes.

That looks pretty damn smart for £500, nice colour too. Don't imagine a set of discs & pads will break the bank for one of those either. Should get your money back if/when you pass it on too. :D

Banger rally? That's a modern!!!

Posted

We got given it by a dealership we work with, which I'm well chuffed with. It'll be getting sold for the charity in a special BCA auction once the rallys finished.

We need a theme for it now. I think I know what we're going to do but as the dealership gave us the car they want some input into it's design, which also means we get to use their huge sticker printing machine.

Posted

That's really nice, I wouldn't mind one of those myself as a runabout, especially in that spec.

Posted

That looks bloody nice and will be dead reliable I bet.

Posted

That looks a tidy bus, and if my old one is anything to go by, (1.8VTI) it'll make it there just fine! Theyre a nice place to sit too, just exceedingly dull! Discs and pads are an easy job, just keep an eye on the oil level, and take some with you, as mine liked to sup it...

Perhaps decorate it like your local community civic centre?!

Posted

It really is nippy for a 1.6. It's a bit odd putting an engine in a car for family's and old giffers that's designed to bounce off the rev limiter at 7000rpm. The 1.8's are 8000rpm red lines and feel properly v-tec just kicked in Yo! rapid.

It's tidy inside too with black leather sports seat and stuff. It seems to idle really high when cold then really low when warmed up. I dunno if they're just like that or not?

Posted

Why do you still post on here Leonard when all you do is moan about everyone on here then moan about them on your forum?

Posted
Driving a reliable modern car 1500 miles will be quite a feat.

Your right. I should buy something so old and shit that I don't make it past Hamilton services on the M74. That'd show them.

Posted

Yeah, you should have bought that Volvo I offered you.

It's a part of the weakness of charity banger rallies for me, all the forced wackiness being another. What's so worthy about driving a reliable, competent car halfway across Europe?

Also, I'm a horrible person who hates charities.

Posted

It does seem a little pointless if it's not really a 'challenge'. Might as well just go to Hertz and rent something.

Posted

You'll have to write to Honda to tell them that one of their cars did a long journey to a country full of strange people that talk another language. Sheesh. I know it was a freebie, but bloody hell, leather, aircon, etc. Fuck me, rip it all out and fit two of those fart-amplifying school chairs instead. Then break a window. Just before the Frenchies do.
