Excellent stuf as usual! Is this estate a rebadged Cavalier Mk 2 Estate with a new nose or is it me?

You are right, it was badged as a 'Sunbird' which I think was made out of Cavaliers.

Think its covered in an earlier part of this (or maybe another) thread.

 

Theres loads of these chavalier clones around the world, all based on the same platform, GM J-car I beleive. There's Holdens in Oz, and numerous different types in the states.. including a preposterous Cadillac version - Behold the Cimarron..

the spring sunshine has brought out the shite for my spotting camera is full after just a few weeks sitting on the passenger seat.

 

Don't know what this is/was but it was made out of pudding and the Italian Mini Clubman was the other side of it

The last two are great.From posts a bit further up, I rather like the Stanza too. I am rather partial to those razorback Cadillacs as well.

What's going on with the headlights on the Volvo and the Pug? Is there some reason they've had their original units replaced by totally out of place rectangular ones?

Don't see enough Pugs to be sure but you see plenty of Volvos around with lights like that, suspect it's a 'US Spec' thing.

Yup - divvy Yanks only allowed sealed-beam headlights prior to '87, which is why all Mercs, Saabs, Pugs and Volvos have very obvious square/round lights up to that period. The US government only allowed round headlights until 1975 as well.

You're probably right - I think he means that round headlamps were the only ones allowed until 1975 but after that they allowed other shapes too :lol: Anyway, welcome to the forum!

No no - my fault squire (welcome by the way). I meant that only round headlights were allowed up to 1975. D'you mean the original Mini by the way - I didn't think they were ever officially imported to the US? I believe the US DoT have now relaxed importation rules, effectively you can now easily import non-Type Approved stuff over 30 yrs old. I believe there's at least one RHD Dolomite Sprint in the US now.

It's worse than that - it was actually 'Merkur', I kid you not, they actually thought that sounded like a 'premium German marque' :lol:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MerkurOn the subject of proper Mercurys the Cougar (gold colored coupe at the dealers) looks very tempting at $2650.The 50s looking blue sedan in the earlier set of pics is also a Mercury - one of the 1949 to 1951 models. These have a iconic status amongst US customisers - lowered and chopped ones are the orginal 'lead sleds'.

Couple of interesting pages on the European-built cars Ford tried to flog in the US during the late 1980s:Merkur . o O o . XR4TiSurprising that it was built as late as 89, I presume that the mk1 Sierra front end and double side rear window arrangement was kept throughout the run even after the "mk2" Sierra came out over here.EDIT: Beaten to it!
