O/t-ish but how about...

...some sort of 'sticky' at the top of the forum welcoming people to Autoshite, asking them to introduce themselves and perhaps a couple of pointers?

That way (hopefully) we'll save people pissing us off, people getting pissed off themselves and might stop endless 'K reg' or 'how do I add pictures' type threads.

Maybe a few polite suggestions to newcomers i.e post a bit about themselves and their shite car history before posting a for sale advert, asking them to try the search bit before asking questions and general stuff about manners, 'txt tlk' and offtopic stuff. What we need to remember is that there will always be spammers and jokers trying to sell stuff, we might get the odd genuine one with an interesting car (Marina, Princess etc) to sell that some of us might be interested in so trying to dissuade people selling stuff from the off might not be to our advantage. As long as they make an effort in introducing themselves first I personally don't see a problem.

Only a suggestion so don 't shoot the messenger.

ISTR there was a "How to add pictures" sticky, but I can't find it now.

Sounds like a good plan, a quick guide to posting pics (copywrite Tayne) would go well with it

It was taken down in a fit of pique last year. I think it's not a bad idea Cav.

I think it is a good idea. May make the place seem a bit more welcoming. When I first posted I was looking for such a thread and was not sure of the best way to introduce myself!!

Well seeing as nobody's posted in the confirmation sticky since January then I'm sure something could be added there instead.

Have to agree with Tayne on this one.

Do we have 'Forum Rules'? Again nobody will read them off their own back, but if someone acts up or pisses others off, they can be referred to them.

That way if they continue with their behaviour, we have a reason for at least suggesting they do one.

However, I think there are only 2 viable options. Either don't read the annoying threads, or have a more formal method of policing them.

Yep, an "introduce yourself" sticky would be helpful.

What about, for a welcome, a retirement age ex services type gatekeeper approaches, barely restraining an apeshit snarling, rabid alsation while bawling "Oi get yer arse out of it, go on, hop it you little bleeder, I know where you live."

But then again, is it too much to ask for people to have some manners?

The vast majority of newcomers do actually say hello, and tell us what cars they have / like. It's only a very small minority that turn up & give us the "HI M8 AV HIABED XYZ OFF PENSHUNARS DRIVE MI BANGA M8S DONT WANNIT WILL SELL 4 £800 NO V5 WINK WINK" treatment without any foreplay.

I agree with Cav Lad that there should be some sort of sticky 'READEN HIER FIRST BEFORE POSTING' type post. I think the post should be on its own to make it clear to newcomers as many just dont have the 'feel' or understanding of the internet and forums. Important info needs to be made clear and easy to access.

It does sound a bit "Blue Forum" to me, since the rules of this place are pretty relaxed anyway and should be pretty self explanatory. Not sure of the logistics, but the best way to stop people signing up just to sell would be to make a separate buying and selling section, then stipulate you need to make 10 or so posts before you can start a thread
