Croatian carriageway crap

Last September family Lobster went to Croatia. Plan was simple - fly to Venice arriving about lunchtime, pickup hire car, drive through nice scenic bits of Italy and Slovenia and into Croatia arriving at the campsite by teatime. Sadly this plan was buggered by Italian air traffic controllers doing what they do best (ie not actually controlling air traffic but having a quick strike). An eight hour wait in Manchester Airport isn't much fun. Its even less fun with an 18 month old let me tell you.

So anyway, about 6pm or thereabouts we arrived in Italy and collected this -

The original plan of a nice scenic, leisurely drive was shot to bits by this delay so it was straight onto the Autostrada to dice with Southern European Ivecos, full beam Audis and the like to get to the campsite at something which might be considered 'before bedtime'. Once we got away from Venice and towards Trieste traffic improved and around the Slovenian border its actually quite entertaining (for a motorway at least). Anyway, we got there with the satnav taking the obligatory three mile detour down a gravel road but Budget Rent-a-Hyundai didn't need to know that.

The following morning we had a wander around the campsite

Out and about in Croatia there is a fair amount of same-as-everywhere-else-in-Europe cars. Newish Audis, BMWs etc. But there is still a pleasing amount of old chod to be found as well. You would expect there to be Yugos about but there aren't perhaps as many as you might think. There are A LOT of Renault 4s though (they were produced in Slovakia until 1992 y'see).

Heres a selection of the local tat -

After a week of generally not doing much we headed back to the airport. Stopped in Trieste for lunch though and pleased to see that the Police di Italia are using loads of these -

I reckon it's a Yugo with some kind of bodykit.

I, in turn, am wondering what this is...

As the badges say, Lada 112, and damn ugly from behind too. Still would tho.

A great selection Lobster. Thanks for reminding me just how FIT Tipos are.

*slinks off to eBay; types 'Tipo'...*

Great pics Mr Lobster

Love the pic of the Delta with the Tipo and Golf behind, It's like some Autocar 25 year old tat test :D

Really getting that too, the first car I got some real use out of was a white 5 door Tipo 1.4 which I loved but treated appallingly and killed within a year. Always said that I'd get another at some point.

It had some proper late 80s graphics down the sides (bottom half of the doors) If anyone has a pic of one like that I'd love a copy 8)

Zastava Koral (AKA Yugo), post-facelift. Rarely seen outside Eastern Europe.

Tipos are pretty common out there. Gotta say I'd never really taken much notice of them before but they are quite a nice looking car really. And is it just me that thinks from certain angles that Yugos look a bit like Mk1 Golfs?

I assumed that some hard up Croation lad had driven his 45a through Halfordskis front window
