Too cold in this country, in winter. It would need to be VERY heavily insulated for you to have any life outside a high tog duvet.Good from March/April on though....

Probably only habitable between June/August realistically.

Been there. It's shit.

Well, having visited my van-dwelling friends in very cold weather I can confirm that the presence of a wood burner makes the small space lovely and toasty very quickly, for negligible cost (in fact it's free for them most of the time because instead of passing skips by, they stop and throw the burnable contents onto the roof).

However, living in such a small space is still harder in winter, because when the weather's nice you can use the grass next to where you're parked as an extension to your living space.

Stayed in Steve's camper for a week or 2 doing the Opel Monza weldathon, the red diesel heater made it nice and warm I would have no worries living in that with the heater. If it got too bad I could provably stay with family.. next year i would aim to be in Southern Europe for the winter

British winter is relatively comfortable for mobile living.

Just avoid South Eastern Europe. Bulgaria was -25C this winter, and the locals said that was a 'mild' one.

When I was in Bucharest Winter 2003-2004, it was -35 at times and there was a white substance called snow, which is frozen water.

I was thiking Spain... plus then I could hunt down a Samba S from actually living in Spain

Posted

There were 2m of snow and minus 10 last time I was in Spain.

I have no idea why many English have this misconception that they have a harsh climate, while the opposite is the case.

I recon if you get one with enough space you could line it with heavy duty insulation and board, which should make it a bit cosier. I suppose it's getting the balance between size and economy if you're going to take it europe. I've got to admit the thought of buggering off into europe to try to find seasonal work (if they have any jobs left in europe) sounds highly appealling especially if you're bringing your own house.

Friend of ours is just about to head off to work at a ski resort for the winter - chalet as part of the deal, you might make a few more quid if you had your own accommodation.

Winter work throughout Europe is still pretty easy to find. I've got a few options lined up for Jan/Feb. The best paid is comfortably in the ski resorts in Switzerland but I met a GR37 French lady recently, so my mind is heading in that direction.

I think I know your friends, they turned up at my folks and offered to lay a new drive for them.

Haha no they're definitely more hippy than pikey. They're a family of four, moving around in their LWB Sprinter doing casual jobs and home educating their kids.

Off for a gander at an old 4 berth caravan today, what is the cost of a trailer license, anyone know?

Posted

Would you be interested in a old Leyland hippy bus?

It's this one...

Still the same livery etc - but has been out of use for a while and needs some tidying up.

The engine and running gear is all BMC FG (threepenny bit) and is spot on, the motor (BMC diesel) is a honey as is the gearbox.

It is near Lincoln and I'll happily put you in touch with the owner...

Less than your horsebox above, but you would need a 7.5 ton ticket as well.

HGV test? Whats it reg'd as?

Motor caravan (camper) class4 (yes even 7.5 ton)

Playbus MOT exempt

Special vehicle MOT exempt

Dont think you could stretch to living van as its not originally a commercial vehicle....

It is bloody funny.....I am going to try that line next time I go to a holiday park, at least I would feel like I was getting what I asked for

Channel 4 at 8.00 converting 1960's ambulance into campervan.

I saw the start if that just now - it looked like it was goona be like something off travelerhomes.com - but when they said they had a budget* of only* about TEN GRAND(!) I got up and left the room.

Posted

I thought it was going to be a self build for 20p and buckets of sweat.

For that budget you could have a camper with a shower, dumper and headroom.

Posted

I was going to say that reminds me of the guy who made a programme about converting a static caravan into a holiday home (whatever will they think of next!), but some Googling has revealed that it's the same person.

13 grand LOL. Looks nice though although full up it looks about as comfortable as a long at the bottom of salt marsh.

I was saying to Mrs C I bet it conks out and it's on ebay next year for 3 grand

I might have solved my problem in the form of 2x Romanian lodgers, sadly dont have TV as, well. Cars. Anyway would be temporary until I get new home and 75quids a week may actually see some of my damn rotboxes sorted. Definately fancy an 80s Eldis horror to tow with the FSO the one I went to see was too big
