Dare I mention....Top Gear....?

I saw the CX a few weeks ago on a low loader, the TG workshops are in Didcot and the car was being trailered out. Clearly nobody was brave enough to drive it to the top gear studio.

I bet they chose the route carefully to avoid low bridges (and some quite high ones too).

I didn't think they'd have another fire stunt after last time. I didn't particularly find that funny for the second time considering the first one was very clearly set up, but what did Clarkson say as they all stood there looking out to sea...? "All we can hear is the burning, cracking ashes of Richard’s motorhome" or something along those lines. I must admit, that cracked me up!

I think we all knew the CX was going off the cliff. Shame really as I didn’t think, from what we saw of it anyway, looked that bad. A dinted wing was about all that I saw wrong with it. It was recorded several months ago and I remember seeing pictures of it hanging off the edge online somewhere. I’m almost certain that scene I believe was filmed at Hartland Point (North Devon). It’s very remote around there. Single track roads and fields pretty much as far as the eye can see. I usually holiday in Croyde at the other side of that bay, where you can see the lighthouse at Hartland flashing at night...

I recognised the road Clarkson was 'timming' the trees with his CX... I'm certain that was the A389 at either Little Petherick or St Issey. It can be a nightmare if you get stuck behind a tractor there. I'm pretty sure I recognised the petrol station where he hit the roof also, but can't place my finger on where exactly. Ive travelled almost all of that 'Atlantic Leg' coastline of Devon and Cornwall over the last sixteen years...!

I thought it was mildly entertaining. Shame we didn't get to see the CX fall over with Clakson in it, as it was it wasn't very convincing.

The lack of 'here's us actually building these vehicles'-scenes made me wonder if they actually ever saw 'their' moronhomes before they went out to shoot the first scene, or if they even had a hand in the design themselves...

I have always wondered about those "car going over a cliff" things - presumably they have to clear up the mess after-wards and I bet thats a twunt of a job.

I thought it was one of the lamer episodes. One of those ones that if it comes on Dave I'll skip it. There aren't many I skip, but this'll be one of 'em. The airship caravan holiday one was another.

Shame really, the Cosworth, 190, M3 one was much better. I much prefer either mad supercar stuff of their cross-Europe challenges to their camping ones.

I watch TG to see them going mental in properly quick cars.

And suck it dry of all fluids before it goes over.

A problem, in a CX...

i enjoyed it, about the only thing im aloud the remote for

Not to be a kill-joy here, but with the amount of people saying they laughed their cock/balls/face/hair off, I have to wonder how - even when you take out the whole car destruction thing, I just don't think the jokes really hit the mark. Even when they're being at their best, about the best it can raise from me is a wry grin or a positive "hm".

I'm not trying to sound above anyone, I just don't understand how it gets so much of a reaction out of people on Internet car forums - I've watched a few episodes at other people's houses (including "car people") and about the best reaction I've ever seen from the audience is a stifled chuckle. Not saying that's bad, but I just can't imagine all these people sat there crying with laughter, I just can't process it in my head.

In all honesty, I think I've laughed more for The Golden Girls.

+1

I said that "I LOLd" but it's a common internet phrase. I suppose it was more of a knowing snigger. But I'm easy going: not the type of toe tapping "go on: AMUSE me" types. I do not consider humour to be an absolute.

Anyway, I just liked seeing the CX on TG even if it got the Marina treatment, at least Clarkson first said "can your cars do this.." Suspension lowered. I guess he doesn't totally hate CXs then.

I wouldn't watch again either but I'd say that for any of the past TGs.

Now the Golden Girls was funny. If you'd said you'd laughed more at George & Mildred it'd have had more impact.

Only joking, love the avatar Hirst. Geoffrey Fourmile was one of the best things about '70s TV. Apart from the spotting opportunities.

Watching it, the bit that I did actually laugh out loud at, was the painting of Hammond's 'ancestor' in his own likeness

Nice bit about Senna, but obviously best bit was Ms Diaz.

I'm off to beat myself to death.

Goodbye.

"ruthless" driver in the pursuit of glory.... or Cheating B'stard as the rest of the wprld knew him.

Yes, interesting that since he died and a few years have passed those vices have become virtues. Would have been interesting to get Schumacher's take on it ...

Schumacher at least acknowledges being a Cheating B'stard.

Philanthropy or no, Senna was a humourless automaton with an interest only in winning at any price.

Probably why they had humourless automaton Hamilton singing his praises.

HARSH

Senna was a fucking genius. Be honest, if you had his God-given ability, you'd be just the same. I know I would.

COR! Can you imagine the Autoshite F1 team in the Turbo era, restricted to 1500cc? TR6 chassis, 1500 B Series with the turbo from some old Leyland truck and banded steels from a Montego. WIN!

Dunno why people get so surprised at the ruthlessness of these folk. They've been brought up since nippers to strive to be the best. Racing isn't really a place for a nice chap - which I why I don't do it. I'd end up saying 'no, you go first' to everyone before getting back to the paddock to receive a flogging for coming last again.

Overall, that was the most enjoyable episode of TG I've seen in a very long time. Well, ok, Hamster's play in the ice was a little tedious - just like the man himself - but James May in the Veyron was ace, the two stars were ace and the Senna tribute was serious TG at its best. Watching Lewis in Ayrton's old McLaren was bloody great. I love the way that Lewis's excitement at what he does just shines out of him in exactly the way it doesn't for Alonso/Schumie.

Succinctly put DW. I enjoyed it immensely. Mrs Ash did too, but was signally unimpressed by the fragrant Ms Diaz's antics in the XKR. My missus drives like that all the time, which is why I discourage her from RWD.

I thought it was a great episode, It started of a bit slow with the VW feature but soon picked up once Captain slow got behind the wheel of the Veyron.

Tom Cruise made me laugh when he nearly rolled the Kia, That was very close! and the Senna feature was very well put together, I wonder how many people are now on youtube watching old video's of him racing.

1 is, anyway. Me.

Am I alone in thinking that Cruise looked slow, and that the times may have been "Sexed up"? I'm no stranger to racing, and if you are VISIBLY slower or quicker, the clock will tell. I appreciate that the program is edited, but even so.

Frankly, no.

I would be James Hunt, abusing the fame to lob my cock up any fly honey who came my way.

Any many who can get thoroughly cunted, knob a load of fillies and STILL win an F1 race of a weekend is a man truly worthy of worship.

Senna, Mansell, Schumacher (though I have to admit he has mellowed nicely), Hamilton, all utter dullards. I would like to see Jensen getting more 'bad behaviour' in. He has the talent for it.

Fair play Pog. Wasn't it James Hunt who had a patch on his overalls that said "SEX, the breakfast of champions"?

Respect to him for that, but while Hunt was good, nay very good, he only won the championship because Lauda refused to drive through that unbelievable weather at Fuji. Lauda had almost been burned to death earlier in that season, and it was amazing that he was back ever, never mind that season.

Anyway, this is Autoshite - aren't we at the absolute, complete and utter opposite end of the market for cars? US= £80 = F1=££,000,000+

Respect though, Pog - I'd have loved to have lived like JH, in the 70's. If anyone ever invents a virtual holiday, like the film "Total Recall", I'd be first in line for "an Eddie Irvine, please"

Hamilton was a dullard when he was on Blue Peter racing remote controlled cars as a little kid, remember seeing it on some program and he just looked like a robot.

Some people just don't have the wit, repartis and natural charisma of the quintessentail shiter. And they had better get used to it. Give Hamilton a 78 Sunbeam running on 3 pots and he'd probably shit himself.

Overall, a big improvement in general from last week's episode and easily the best we've seen for quite some time, yet alone this series. Anyone who doesn't watch the show any more because of it’s silliness should see this one.

Hammond's bit at the start was dull but apart from that, very little else I could pick fault with. There wasn’t any cacking about, no painfully staged stunts (although Tayne has a good point with the end of Tom Cruise's lap...) and no obvious scripted jokes. Just good items, decent guests and genuine humour. This is what I expect from Top Gear.

No, I wasn't the greatest fan of Senna's either but what a driver and a great tribute.

Yes, Tayne. I also noticed the rather odd angle Tom Cruise's two-wheeled stunt was shown. The end of Michael Gambon’s lap was shown from the finish line like pretty much all the others (showing the car approaching). I wonder why Tom Cruise's was shown the other way around - i.e driving away from the camera with no forward-approaching footage...?
