I propose a minute's silence.

...of frustration when you try to switch it on in the morning and the battery's dead.

Will the still be making them in Egypt I wonder? Oh well, there's still time to pop over to India to buy that new Hindustan Ambassador 1,000,000 years after it was designed :)

:(:(:(:(

I'm surprised they made it for this long though.

On the Lada Website its hard to find the 2107. Its tucked away!

Bloody hell I didn't realise they DID still make them. I've had one and whilst they are reliable enough the driving experience is not very pleasant. Like the Trabant, whilst the captive market was in existance under communism and there was no alternative it was bound to sell well. these days though I can't imagine any Muscovite buying one through choice.

Alas, they don't offer up any pics of the interior...

A new one would be a good future classic - rust proof it from day 1,and convert to RHD and you will have a future classic ( of sorts )

Oddly, I really wouldnt mind one of these to smoke to work and back in.

Same here especially that Hindustan as well.

Never fond of that daft grille on the front of the above cars. Much prefer the gray plasic one a la my old Riva Estate. Must have another =)

Having had one from new in the past, I agree Rivas are brill and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!! I agree you'd have to pay attention to the rust-proofing though. For a car that's supposedly reinforced to survive Russian conditions, they rust to b*ggery in no time :)

Aye but remember that there is no salt on Russian roads unlike our indolent bourgeois drivers the glorious Russian worker knows how to handle a car in the ice and snow!

Down with gritite-saltyroadism!

Research has led me to believe the the basic Lada Saloon with a 1600cc engine costs around 206900 Rubels, thats around £4400.

I reckon for around £6500, you could import one, and register it, Thats if can pass the Emissions and what not.

However, Even better is the Tata Nano, Which the basic model costs around Rs. 141898, thats £1688.59.

So probable for £4500, you could have a brand new Nano, Including Shipping, Registry, and test's.

Yup, sales of the Lada 2104-2107 have fallen by 71% compared to cumulative figures comparing to last year in Russia.

Also the Riva part of the factory still operates largely on Soviet terms - ie make sure everyone is employed before worrying about efficiency. I believe they still get government grants for keeping people in work and so this one one reason why the model lasted so long.

I would still much rather have a new Riva than one of those Nano things. At least a Riva looks like a car.
