Just so I only have to add to this thread now, here are the links to the other two threads of cars from this yard.

//////////

As promised here are some more details of the above cars. I went up to Leyburn today to the scrapyard and had a chat to the son of the owner who was as interested to see if the Horizon would start as me! He stuck a battery on it and after some turning over it tried to go... so with a bit of Start Ya Bastard in the air filter she fired into life! Happy days :)

On closer inspection there is plenty of work to do. The TAX disk was from 99

And I seem to have lied about the miles. Its done 29,000 not 49,000!!

There are also some pics of the TR7 in a different yard. Had I have seen that green interior when It came in I'd have been trying to buy it for myself - lovely.

Also, I do want the Horizon, but I'm offering it on here as I shouldn't be buying a 5th car, and someone else may be able to give it a better home. That said I've been thinking about it at some length today so may just buy it - we'll see. I can provide any contact details via PM if anyone's seriously interested in either.

Oh and it drives and the brakes seem to work, but I only drove half a meter forwards and backwards just to see if it was seized up.

Please could someone let me know the link works okay, I don't know how my privacy settings are on Facebook. Thanks. Will take a few minutes to upload all the pics, but a quarter of the time to upload to FB than to here :)

Link works fine here!

Is that moss in the third picture or a bloody big hole in the floor? :D

Would love to save it but personally it is beyond my meagre ability and certainly beyond me financially at the moment! Hopefully someone more adventurous (or mad) will step forward.

Owning an Horizon is definately an itch I want to scratch at some point!!

I am sure these drive just like an Alpine, i.e. pretty nicely with a smashing ride quality and comfy seats. However, in my eyes an Alpine is a neat and well-proportioned car, just kind of ‘right-looking’ if a bit bland. These things on the other hand look RUBBISH. All the sharp edges and big-sticky-out wheelarches with massive arch gaps, the styling is a fuggin mess TBH. I would still ‘do’ one like, the one I would do most vigorously would be the believed extinct XUD-engined one.

Posted

Have never driven one but my friends brother had one in the mid 90's. I thought it sounded like a bag of nails but one day we went for a ride in it and I recall being quite shocked at how comfortable and smooth it was. Even the "bag of nails" engine seemed fairly unobtrusive inside. I do recall him telling me that the gearchange was like "stirring treacle pudding".

Well I'm quite taken by the econometer 'flashy LEDs' in the speedo. And mad enought to buy this. AND I'm starting a course on vehicle paint and body refinishing in September all being well

Cavette: the floor is far from solid but that's not a big hole. I think a leak from windrcreen or door seal. There is weird flaking sellopane type stuff all round the inside seal on windscreen. Bizaar.

Posted

I want one of these too but probably only as my Dad had 2 of them when I was a kid and 2 Sunbeams, a Citroen Visa, a Dyane and a Pug 309, all before they were shite.

Posted

You might as well buy it, since you sound sold on it already. If you do start that course, it will be a useful project to work on. At least its only been outside for one year.

Have you done a welding course though? :D

I could not think of a better way to way to become proficient at welding than to buy a Horizon that has been parked outside on the grass for a year.

Posted

I was intending doing a welding course as I'm self taught and could do with getting some guidance. My thinking was I would be proficient at welding by the time I finish the Horizon

Posted

I don't want to practice so to speak on my Monza but I'd happily weld the Talbot. I already did some on the XR3 and Samba for MOT

It is fantastic. Every day I find something else that makes me smile, its just how a car should be

Posted
Hmm... It doesn't look too solid!

That area of rust didn't extend to the chassis leg, its a bit of a weird one the panel that's rusted stops short of the chassis and not due to rust alone
Posted

Yes there is rust on the leg but it looks much worse, most of that mess is what's dropped of the inner arch? panel

Your Polonez isn't on the DVLA.

So what's that got to do with you precisely? - stop stalking him and his car FFS  ?

I think I will own this Horizon, I can feel it. It is so crusty though! But the gold paint is drawing me in, its fantabulous! Should I, or shouldn't I?

I think you should by it - the Horizon is SORN.

It's been untaxed since 1999 when it's elderly owner passed away. It was kept garaged for the best part of that time but the last 12 months up that scrapyard have taken their toll.

Posted

What do the scrapyard want for it? If it's little more than scrap value surely you could buy it, if it turns out to be a total shed then you could split it and weigh the rest in and make your money back. Alternatively it could be a lovely motor and you're onto a winner!

Posted

£300 and it's gonna be a welding minefield. It wants at least 4 areas welding underneath, a panel under the bonnet repairing, a front valance, 1 rear arch, 1 rear strut top repair, the rear inner arch/sill area and the sills repairing or replacing. Just after a quick look last week. I guess a good clean/ wire brush up and strip down will reveal more. The only bit that scares me is around the jacking points because they look like a complex area to weld, and it is no fun lieing underneath a car welding, as I dont have a four pillar ramp or inspection pit.

Why do I get so bloody attached to cars! I just cant bring myself to let any go! I have in the past and always regretted it. See the logical thing to do here would be sell the Samba, or the XR3.
