Help finding brake shoes for a 1981 mk2 Cavalier

I friend of mine has a very early Mk2 Cavalier 1.6 GL saloon.

Now the problem is trying to find brake shoes for it as the ones he keeps getting supplied wont fit his car. I will post pics up soon as I plan to take the drum off for some pics to try and trace some but basically from what I can remember later ones are self adjusting but the ones on this are manual adjust.

It looks a very old design and I'm wondering if they've been parts binned across from say a Chuvette or say a Mk1 Astra - Opel Ascona.

All the pics on ebay just show generic pics and state fit all models but thats not the case.

Can anyone help / assist -

Almost certainly mk1 Astra will be the ones.

Trying to remember my time in GM parts 20 years ago, ISTR 1.3 Cavs had Astra shoes, 1.6 had Astra Estate shoes and the 1.8 had Astra Van shoes BUT they were often incorrect from the factory.

If the worst comes to the worst see if you can get a later rear axle and swap them over - there are plenty of owners on mk2cav.com who have fitted complete rear axles from mk3 Cavaliers with discs and so should have the drum set-up kicking around in the shed.

Cheers for the replies - we did think axle swap but obviously that would be last resort -

Tontops - you reakon then that I should be looking at 1.6 astra estate ??

He's popping up at weekend so i'll add pictures then :-) thanks

Surely, if the worst comes to it, the shoes could be relined?

Try Chelsea Frictions if they're still going, if they haven't got 'em - which is unlikley they can reline yours.

They look right but it's been a while since I took drums off - Can I come back to you after i've viewed em again Saturday .. Hold them for now

Regards over comments about relining em. problem is this is his only car as such it's constantly in use. If above dont fit then yes thats an option ... I just thought they were robbed off somat else which above pic seams to confirm.. Thanks everyone for input :D

Those ones in tbe picture are marked 1297.

As far as I can remember, the lockheed part no.s were LS1242 for the 7" Astra drums, LS1292 for the standard 8" drums on the 1.6 saloon/hatch and LS1297 for the wider 8" drum fitted to the 1.8 and estate.

Or they might have been 8" and 9"

Edited because I posted from my phone initially, but its a bloody pain and the result made me look illiterate!

Right - had car at my house this morning and took drum off - On reflection the shoes dont look that bad but thay are contaminated and he's been saying that there 'not like they used to be' If push comes to shove I should be able to strip clean and rebuild them and they should be better - i've now got it my mind that he had a leaking wheel cylinder on the o/s and thats why we started the mission to find some shoes.. At least it's not as bad as it could be and i've some pics now to help me.

Basically the differance is the fact that these shoes have manual adjustment and the other ones we find are automatic. As such the cut out is differant to allow adjustment on the cam.

Anyways have some pics - added some of the car also ;-)

That is a seriously lovely Cavalier. These were so far ahead of the game in '81 and the OHC engine was a peach. Given regular maintenance and Waxoyl dosage, that would be a superb daily driver. That's got to be the oldest Mark 2 Cav left surely?

That was supplied new by a company that was taken over by Perrys. It still sells Vauxhall from that site. I work for their parent branch in Doncaster.

That's lovely! It might not be the utter earliest, but it's one of them. It's also in better condition than my 1987 one!

Very nice. Love how even the GL is considered too povo for a passenger mirror in 1981!

Cheers for comments i'll pass them on. I must admit I thought it stange no pass mirror but my mate loves the car and it's in good hands. He bought it from ebay about 4/5 years ago with my assistance for £700. It was a one previous owner and I think it had 30k on at the time
