I've found this in a old issue of CAR from 1990, I thought you guys might fancy a go, Sadly no Quartic steering wheel to win, just the pride in knowing that your at the top of your game when it comes to shite.

All i ask is that you don't cheat and ruin it for everyone, so no googling or hunting through your stash of old magazines in the loft for answers!

I remember that one Trig, and even remember most of the answers for it.

I've also got the one they did a few years earlier (or later, can't remember) which had such gems in it as "What car from the last 25 years (back in 199x) was available with 4 different wheelbase lengths?"

I'll try and find it and post it up, if it doesn't fall on your scanner before it falls on mine. 8)

I must have that one in the pile beside me somewhere I'll track it down and post it up at some point if you haven't done it first.

Ok for a bonus point can anyone guess what this car is?, I wonder if this would even stump Barret as there's very little on google about it.

Can you guess what it is? by Trigger's Retro Road Tests!, on Flickr

Posted

That wouldn't be very good in the rain would it!, No this is a proper steel built car.

Posted

Agreed it's Steel built

But it doesnt look proper

It's the size of ideal Jaywick accomodation though.

Posted

Yeah, I'm stumped! Looking forward to finding out what it is actually, I do love stuff like that

I found it easily enough but I'd written my answers all over the page so mine's useless I'm afraid. :( It's the January 1992 issue if that helps.

In that guess it's right in front of me then, i'll scan it in a bit and post it some point later. Thanks!

Right, ready for some answers then... The car above is a Lancefield Transcontinental Hudson, I found some more information whilst googling.

It is a 1935 Hudson with British Lancefield body, which the coachbuilder built for the 1935 Olympia Show.

It was a 8-seater limousine and according to Ralf JF Kieselbach: "Lancefield's idea of aerodynamics was expressed in the rectangular cross-sectional shape with pontoon-type sides, a flowring rear and - unfortunately - an almost classical radiator.

Wheres Pierce Arrow had stored spare tyres behind the doors in the front wings, Lancefield, like Gustav Ericsson in his 1933 Volvo "Venus Bilo" used this space for suitcases, many of which had to be tailor-made.

The "boot lid" under the large undivided window covered the spare tyre. Even the petrol tank cap was to be found behind a special lid. The rear wheels were not covered which probably increased the drag from 3-5 per cent

Sensational about Lancefield's show car was the increased interior width, achieved by eliminating the wings. There was sufficient space for 4 people sitting arm in arm on the front or rear seat.

The vehicle remained a single specimen, as can be expected of the conservative British, and it is unknown why Lancefield Ltd, which stopped production of bodies in 1948 had to use an American chassis for this rather progressive body remains a riddle to the aerodynamics chronicler, since already in 1934 it had caused a sensation with its streamlined body on a British chassis, the Siddeley Special

Notice the 4 seats in the front and the driver having passengers to both the right and left of him!

As for the main quiz, most of you done very well, but none of you got them all right!

Competition winner Gary Axon is now the PR man for the Goodwood race circuit/festival etc and was previously head of PR for Saab. I think he's still got the Quartic wheel...
