A few vehicles rarely seen on these shores have rocked up today; Mira Seat 128-3P, Guiloy Granada (with broken front suspension) and Mira Taunus. Oddly proportioned but beggars can't be choosers  when it comes to 1:64ish Cortinas

I see both colours of Cosmic Blues (another pair I had as a kid), a very nice looking Pi-Eyed Piper and the Adams Drag Star, an original 16 Python and the Piston Popper

I finished illuminating my display cabinets today, this one is Hot Wheels original 16 (all of them) a couple of other Redlines and some of my Blackwall era cars.

Also, Fake Sand Digger does indeed cling to glass!

Yes, that is a 1967 first-series Hot Wheels Silhouette

Blue Cosmic Blues was actually Sierraman's one, but it crept into shot to be with the white Cosmic Blues.  Should be Cosmic Whites then.

Adams Drag-Star was grabbed for a couple of Quids because I was was so extremely embarrassed for owning one without the MAG FRONT WHEELS.  Now sorted and will transfer over from this donor. Before anyone else notices

I think you'll find that's 105E; 109E was the Consul Classic. [/pedant]

In other news, I shot some pics today so I'll upload them when I'm on the other computer.

Thank you for the continuing history files!  I can't fault your facts from my own memory and I'm delighted to keep learning new stuff about the things I love.

Yes sorry Silhouette not Python. Adams should be a good engine donor too I reckon

Well that was why I grabbed it.  In reality it's not that bad TBH.  Not bad enough to strip it just for the sake of it...  Oh what to do.

Can’t quite explain why, but as a lad the HW cars always left me cold. Was it they seemed weird, being focused on customs and unknown US culture? Always seemed a bit too small too; compared to MB Monteverdi Hai and Maserati Bora, that were pawed over

Posted

I felt exactly the opposite!  I was an avid watcher of the little American telly we got back in the 60s, and my comics were DC rather than Hotspur.  I was aware of Hot Wheels from very early-on, because they were advertised in my Superman/Batman/Flash etc comics, and I knew some of the cars from seeing them on the likes of Hawaii 5-0 and Ironside.  Perhaps I was just odd...

Posted

I was buying Street Machine mag from 10 onwards so I was pretty clued up on the custom stuff, especially once I got into Rod & Custom and various other US publications. All the same, as a child I liked models of real cars that I was familiar with rather than fantasy castings. However as an adult I really like Hot Wheels so had to have the Original 16 in my collection

Posted

I was born in the 70s so maybe was playing catch-up ?

Living in Australia at turn of the 90s got me buying Rod & Custom and Classic American as well as plenty of Australian SM etc.

Unfortunately all left behind in loft after last house move. Because disorganised and exhausted. Wife was elated though!

Don't forget, Allan has others in both series, available.  I've told him I'm showing you lot, so if you want anything, send me requests and I'll see what he's got.  Postage will be £3 up to 2kg, as usual.

And finally, my latest ebay purchase, an Oakland PD Ford Fairlane

That's another one I've been chasing since I first saw one listed, which tbf wasn't that long ago, but this one didn't run over budget for some reason so I grabbed it.  Always interested in a police car, especially American!

A quick question for you die cast restorers, what do you use to strip the original paint off with? I was about to use Nitromors, but thought I should ask on here in case it pits the white metal haha.

Here is as far as I've got with my model of C30 T5, plastics removed and sunroof cut out...

It was strange when I looked at the real car properly and measured it up, how curved the sunroof is on the edges...

Not sure if I should remove the doors to paint it or not, I think they were attached when originally painted...

Usual rate Jo: £1 each plus post.  Hang on a bit and I'll see if I can find some more.

The Triumphs are Atlas, from their Sports Cars series that came in Corgi-like boxes.  Allan does have others, but no duplicates.  I can see what else there is if you're interested?  They'll be a fiver each plus post, but one payment of £3 will post a few models ;)

Caustic soda.  Save and wash out an ice-cream tub and keep it strictly for the purpose.  Put model body in.  Fill with boiling water until the model is covered.  Add a capful of caustic and stand back.  Might be best to do this outdoors!  Quite a bit of paint will be fizzed off in seconds, but you may find it takes somewhat longer to clean off the whole shell, and may even require a second bath.  It's probably also a good idea to keep a stiff toothbrush for stripping, to encourage the paint off.

Cor, looks like you stripped the shelves rightly!

Yes, that was a cracking couple of months while those were sloshing around - I managed to find most of them, though I see you managed to track down the green Moskvitch saloon which I never could find in any branches I visited. Good going!

Erm...

please wear gloves and eye protection !

I find mixing the soda in with hot (not boiling!) water is more than enough. The reaction is exothermic - heat is created.  Stir and then let it settle for five mins then add the metals first. Allow half hour of cooling and then introduce the plastics. Don’t do any of this near your kitchen worktop, or sofa.

I have used caustic soda as it's quick, but I have concerns that it may affect the metal long term.

If I'm not pressed for time I use paint stripper in a jar, leave it to work for a day or too. Brass wire brush to remove any little bits left, small pick etc to clear out the lines etc in the casting.

Leave the doors on, one coat of paint with them open then after it's dry shut them before a 2nd coat.

I usually try and use a bit of heat from a hairdryer to help the paint go off although you risk blowing dust into it if it's still wet. I've heard of people setting up a metal rack above a 60w bulb to bake the paint on too

Thank you.  The green Moskvitch is actually a Lada, but yes, it did seem to be rare, I only found two.  One is now unpacked so I can change the stock at my restored garage from time to time.  There was a Moskvitch???

Gloves and eye protection, yes of course, sorry.  I kind of took it for granted that a Shiter would do that but you're right, it doesn't hurt to top up the warnings!

Gosh, I never saw a Lada in green either (though I have a yellow plod version) - but I seem to recall a few folks on here managed to bag the green Moskvitch 2140, as below:

Moskvitch_2140_De_Agostini.thumb.jpg.73096ce464b71ab3bf4b7146ade72dc0.jpg

I looked and looked but never found one!

Still, the orange Moskvitch van (electricity service?) is bloody lovely and the Volga estate - paramedic and Aeroflot - is fantastic too.

And I still love the (very effective) GAZ-69 Snowplough...

I've tried caustic soda, but much prefer paint stripper.

Find the caustic soda too harsh,I've experienced paint reaction problems from it too, despite scrubbing the model thoroughly with clean water and washing up liquid after the caustic solution.
