Did you get it?

Nope I have a few versions already. I'll be rolling past again later if you want one

Not sure, I'm busting at the seams here

Looking at it, it's a custom grille and the Toys-R-Us wheels are a problem

Not sure I can blame any one individual addict on here this time, just that I like Volvos generally and I seem to have started collecting Matchbox SuperKings although the scale of them is very variable to say the least.

Strangely they are RHD

1) No idea why they were RHD

2) You need* to get the ambulance one now for completeness!  Had one but sold it on a some while ago as the wheels spoiled it and, well a clear-out of service vehicles had to happen

Saying that, having an Ambulance about did come in handy when Doris had a bit of a turn

Recent arrivals that I shouldn’t have bought!

Dinky Austin Princess. Not in too bad condition, but it needs a suspension pump up!

Dinky Transit. Came with the Princess. Needs a rear door and glazing. I like these though so I’ll probably strip this one and do it as a standard panel van.

Dinky VW 1600. Saw this one and couldn’t resist it! It’s in lovely condition, only missing it’s steering wheel.

Finally. French Dinky Renault 4.
Im no lover of French cars to be honest! But, the 4 is a car that my grandad had in Cyprus. Bought after his new Morris Marina was written off as a stop gap car. This was 1974, which was when the Turkish army invaded the island. The Renault became a bit of a hero as it was the car my grandparents, mum, auntie and uncle all had to pile into and evacuate in! It was formed into a convoy of other brits being evacuated to RAF Akrotiri all the while there was fighting going on around them!

Anyway… lovely little model!

Around the same time there was a Volvo Estate fixation, the Dinky Volvo 265 also made an appearance

These are the only colours I was after: the Made In England blue metallic civilian and the Plod livery one, together with the Made in Italy (by Politoys I think it was) garish orange 'vistoso arancione speciale'

Kept the blue one though, it's still here, the wing casting flaws on the Politoys one made me itch.  It's a real shame about the Speedwheels  though, would much rather see the metal set on there

On the Porsche 911 Turbo maybe, but look way too wide and out of place on a Volvo!  Jerry Leadbetter wouldn't have stood for it,I'm sure

1) Made by Matchbox so why not RHD. Also maybe someone at Matchbox thought Sweden still drove on the left, they didn't swap until 1967.

3) Doris looks quite healthy to me.

They remind me of the Volvo 164, with Woolfies on, that the butcher at the end of our road had.

Jerry always wanted big rims, but Margo put her foot down and said no.

PS Just found a shot of a 164 with slot mags, the one down the end of our road was dark blue.

Yes and why not.  Could perhaps the answer lie with the planning around the Rally Team gift pack with the RHD Datsun 240Z ?

hd_item_3019327_3243418530.jpg.c651509db635d70f3a5dd167edb9bbac.jpg

Seems odd though, as the Volvo model could have been a prime export model for liveries, such as  Ambulans/Ambulant/Krankenwagen/Doktor/Læge/etc, though that was seemingly avoided by having a generic Ambulance tampo.

Either way, the earlier SAAB Sonnett III was LHD.

I was told years ago, that the road casualty figures for the Swedish switch-over year were suppressed / not released.  Though probably rumour.

I just need a tailgate and glazing for it now.

I doubt I’ll get much further now, even trying to find a drill bit was difficult to remove the roof light casting rivet was difficult. Everything is packed away!

They're 15" Wolfrace rims. Those had a kid of extra rim just like the 6" wide VW Bug ones

Used to see 7" wide ones on XJ6s aswell.

Well then. Despite less-than-auspicious circumstances, I didn't leave the market utterly bereft and empty-handed today.

Nope.

Because there was this...

IMG_20231006_1655262.thumb.jpg.be29104b353d986d23a9dd05f542dc33.jpg

And what's inside, you may well ask?

Well, nothing, as it happens.

IMG_20231006_1655322.thumb.jpg.7ebac54447bc0ad0ffc41bb8e21a0c3a.jpg

It's just a lid.

But, it's a very nice lid, I reckon.

IMG_20231006_1655402.thumb.jpg.c19302f38e215339335b79e2343891a8.jpg

This was gifted to me by Nemesis - who possesses an (almost) complete example of the legendary Gift Set 24, but recently found a better, less coggled lid to crown his.

So he then had a stray lid, going spare.

You can probably guess where this tale is heading.

I was rather touched that he'd thought of me, and asked how much he wanted for it.

But no, he didn't want anything for it - happy just to re-home it.

Which I thought was jolly kind of him.

As and when I get some sort of display case organised, you can be sure this'll look quite nice in it - as I do have a curious soft spot for the Commer PB van.

So even if there was no diecast to take my fancy today, it wasn't an utter washout all the same...

We went to the market in Hailsham this morning on our way to Lewes, nothing doing there even though lots of stalls today.

A Junk shop in Lewes had these for £2.50 each, which while not super cheap is boot fair money here in the south east for Corgis even shite Humbroled ones like these!

Mrs Concern wanted the Matchbox VW, I've not seen one with both doors still attached before!

I've wiped most of the green paint off of the Elan and most of the original blue and the Tiger sticker is still there, but I think I'll paint it white at some point. It's only missing the screen and has one squashed tyre.

The Cortina is a grey one with the late cast wheels, missing tailgate window and "wood" panel. I washed it and some of the red came off, but also some of the grey-you can't win them all!

I've never had a circus crane and never wanted one, but it's actually a nice model with suspension and different wheels to any I've seen before, not sure what I'll do with it, but I like it.

The transporter is complete apart from the cab missing a mirror. Quite a lot of the repaint has wiped off, but I might repaint myself anyway. I do have a pretty nice one already, but you cant have too many transporters as now I need* some more period correct cars for this one!

The silver version seems to fare much better than the previous green one, where you can take the doors off by flexing the base slightly. Two versions to look for, roof up like yours and roof down

Matchbox 34 Volkswagen Camper

It is of course also the basis for the infamous Maisto "Champer" which has many variations, which I shall not post here in case you lose the will to live

Maisto VW Champer

Also just realised what a terrible job Lesney did of getting the windows etc right - looks like someone butchered a panel van

You did well there! :)  And I'd say you already have two period-correct cars to load on the Carrimore, in the shape of the Lotus and Cortina.

Incidentally if anyone comes across a stray top deck from either the next shape Carrimore or the Tri-decker, I'd be interested.  I have a project in mind ;) but the top deck that came with the Bedford units is too bulky and heavy.  Be warned, if you do send me one, it might be some time before you see the finished photos, as I'm on the lookout for a particular Corgi chassis-cab on which to mount it.  I do actually have one but I have a different body to go on that.

You're right and I have some more, but that's no fun I *need a new different set!

I'll keep my eyes open at the next toy fair as I often see boxes with transporter bits "n" pieces.

Also, that sounds interesting and I'm now visualising various possibilities!

Hmm, had a quick look at this not long ago and the brake fluid isn’t looking too promising! It doesn’t appear to have done anything to the Dinky paint. Even rubbing a screwdriver blade on it doesn’t seem to be removing any soft paint.
I’ll give it over night to really soak but I’m not holding my breath.
This might call for something a bit stronger.

B&Q stuff on the Viva above. I've just got some Rustins stripper which is meant to be the old (nasty) recipe and work well, looking forward to trying it now...

I do have some very potent model paint stripper, it’s so good it actually stripped the engine enamel off my Capri’s engine! But, it’s been packed away…😤

Also while I’m thinking about it,

Whats the best way to get the headlight jewels out? Normally I can push them about to loosen them and they drop out, but on the Transit they sit ‘in’ the wings a fair bit and it’s hard to do, plus they’re stuck in fast! I don’t really want to break them as I want to reuse them.

Posted

Sometimes there's a hole to push them out from the back - you might find they fall out in paint stripper anyway as it dissolves the glue. You can buy rhinestones cheap as chips off eBay anyway
