Is that the model or the real thing!

It's the real car. From the sunny side. Taken on Ashdown Forest during the summer of 1990.

What make is the Econoline? Love that. CA camper is lovely too. Seeing this massive buyage makes me feel better about my lack of control with diecast buying... And the green security van?

Majo CX is a very nice colour. Redline is very cool, what's the model name?

Last two customs are interesting, I'm awarding myself a shite point for recognising the Pixar Cars wheels

It is the Hachette 1/43 Bedford CA Dormobile Camper Van, boxed new.  By IXO

It was annoyingly cheaper than getting hold of this Spot-On Tonibell Ice Cream Van example in complete condition.  It was overpainted and awful - BUT FFS I ACTUALLY WON ONE - so dunked it quickly to mask the pain, then primered and coated before it could argue back.  Not got around to putting it back together just yet, might do that shortly if I can drag myself away from the laptop.

Embarrassed about that one too, but thought as I had never ever seen one it was unlikely I ever would again.  So didn't go to the pub that night to finance it

It's the 1970 Mod Quad

It's the Moko-era Lesney 1959-64 Commer 30 CWT Van with the sliding door

69A20-7.jpg.1819c97192a33cdc1b53c213d4296048.jpg

Smart custom wheels I thought.  So much so I was considering repeating the look for the later slightly larger Matchbox body released as 1963-68 TV Service Van

Of which I have a spare body with a snapped base, hanging about wanting something doing, no less

I pondered what I had bought for a while, thinking it was a Morestone or Ben Bros, until the penny dropped that the base had been reseated inside out to lower the body

The Pickup  on the right came from same seller, in same bundle of two, for a fiver top bid for the pair.

It's the 1958-63 Matchbox Commer Pick-Up Mk VIII

But you knew that already.

No I don't know why I have a Commer Karrier affliction either.

They get expensive too...

It's the Spot-On Commer Security Van (Money Box)

Spot-on-273-Commer-Security-Can-X596.thumb.jpg.d28fd58f0feba17333c204513d83360b.jpg

Been outbid plenty on these.  For a year.  Bidding still went to £16 on this.

I pawed over the photos.  Could see casting good, glazing good, grille/lights good, bumpers knacked (but available), BACK DOORS HAD BEEN SMASHED IN (also available); yet at least the decal and paint seemed just about ok enough in that I hoped it wouldn't need to be dunked.  Plus the Spot On Aston Martin DB3 being obtained for a tenner helped the medicine go down, in a most delightful way.

I can remember those decertificated Vanguards knocking around - I picked this Nordic Blue Mk2 Cavalier up in 2007 or so.

2135349890_IMG_20230515_1843412.thumb.jpg.34e26e14f07d339b40dbc0aef3a7d1ce.jpg

I wasn't sure if they were factory seconds - although there were no noticeable flaws on the model I got - but if they were a way to get shot of overproduction on limited editions, then that makes sense.

My understanding was that factory production generally runs to 10% extra margin on limited edition stuff - so if a manufacturer plans to release a limited run of 1,000 models, the factory would produce 1,100 to allow for quality control issues such as paint masking errors or stuff getting chipped/ broken during assembly.

So I guess if only 40 from the run, say, are flawed then that leaves them with 60 otherwise decent examples left outwith the limited edition parameters. I suppose they've then a choice to use the surplus as trade samples, the basis for industry presentation models - or simply flog 'em off a bit cheaper.

In recent years I've noticed some unusually un-round numbers for limited edition ranges, so maybe these days they prefer to manufacture the models first and then decide on exactly how big to make the release, based on how many emerge from the factory in a saleable state - hence runs along the lines of '1 of 880' and '1 of 1135'.

Mine has a punched hole on the box end flap, with the sticker applied over it.

350641919_IMG_20230515_1844032.thumb.jpg.e9c63a212727e9a0788f7400cc937cff.jpg

They must have been sold off pretty cheaply.

Can you imagine paying £6 for a new Vanguards model these days?

Wish I'd bought a couple more at the time, now I think about it!

P5 Rover on the left? Nice casting.

Nabbed for just over a fiver I think it was.  Ignored it initially, as already have a Spot On Rover 3 Litre [P5] example that had a bit of a past repaint, isn't the cleverest, but still have one to fondle.

But when I looked at the underneath photo I saw it was a battery cell/bulb holder version, which I didn't know they did.  Thought it would go well with the Ford Zodiac already on the shelf, blinking its own lights at me.

WP_20230515_21_24_21_Rich.thumb.jpg.c4db5ef83b32e499ae8a34842258cee1.jpg

So a plan was hatched to make the best of two, with new bumpers.  Was surprised to get it, as the rest of the seller's Spot Ons went up to the moon.

Will have to see about what to do with the left overs

This month or so has seen spending insanity.  Two holidays, two 1:1 cars (one a V8) - AND all this ruddy lot of smaller efforts to tread on, now the shelves are full.

There has been some resto/Code3 going on here!  I teased you with a shot of several shells in primer, now I can show you the results.  Some of these will have been sent by various Shiters; some are from ebay and some from toyfairs.  Which is what, sent by who and when, I doubt I could tell you now but if you recognise something, I hope you're not disappointed.

100_0040.thumb.JPG.75159170f31fa5265c9c03b71db1593e.JPG

So... Corgi Ford Thunderbird, finished this very day.  It was abused and overpainted, as so often...

100_0038.thumb.JPG.1f62973ec14518485f1326bc8169edce.JPG

And another Thunderbird, this time from the Bond collection.  I removed the two men and replaced them with two women, then a coat or several of green Humbrol to make the Thelma&Louise car.  Behind it is another Bond car, George Lazenby's DBS, now representing Lord Brett Sinclair's car from The Persuaders!

100_0037.thumb.JPG.08760ddf294593af794c7c329331ccab.JPG

Some more Bond cars: the Diamonds Are Forever Mustang repainted yellow as the true Eleanor (Gone In 60 Seconds, the first one!) and the blue Thunderball Mustang repainted red to be the car in the first of the Taffin books (by Lyndon Mallet if you like a good read!).  It's specifically described as a red 66 convertible with white top and interior.

100_0036.thumb.JPG.c65bac861f4134426d997510d5b93dad.JPG

Yet another Bond car!  The Dr No Alpine repainted as the car that gets dumped in the river with a girl in the trunk, in the original Get Carter.  Behind it is an old Dinky Taxi, the Austin FX3, painted black to represent Sid James' car in Carry On Cabby.  I have another in paint, and a third on the way, so I reckon that's enough of a fleet for now.  I also have an Atlas police mkII Jag which will be painted metallic grey as the robbers' car, then I need a couple of Dinky mk1 Cortinas to become Glamcabs.  God knows how I'm going to make the roof sign they all had.

100_0033.thumb.JPG.221c8a151a6b9975ec22ec5c138689c4.JPG

You've seen the Commer in the background before, but here's the Dinky Humber Hawk that I think was among the primered shells.  I just finished this one today too.  The PC 49 number plates it would have had from new were long gone so I've cobbled up some Vanguards plates from one of my Enfield-era models.  PHV 193 has become 193 PHV by the simple trick of cutting down the middle and sticking to the car bit by bit.  Bloody fiddly trying to attach half a number plate!  Also, it came on white tyres, so I swopped them with the Corgi Thunderbird above; much better.

100_0039.thumb.JPG.ffcae4581b57f4c89114d10d0c4fa487.JPG

These are in the Personal fleet, as seen or at least mentioned in my Life Of Shite thread.  Back left is a partwork Polonez from a toyfair, now representing my dad's E-reg one that you can see in my avatar.  Back right is a Dinky Standard Atlas; not my original but a replacement I've had for 30+ years.  When I dismantled it the window set broke, and I couldn't find one on ebay, but since I didn't need most of it I just decided to make it like an earlier Dinky with no interior and no glazing.  It was originally a minibus but I ground the window surrounds flush and filled them in, because the one I remember (from when I was about 5!) was a plain van.  And we only had it a week, if that.  Finally, the first car I bought after returning from Cyprus!  My Pug 406, which definitely came from a Shiter because two came, at different times.  The better one, in its original blue, is in my Film collection as Robert deNiro's car in Ronin.  This one, again finished today, is now Humbrolled to match my car.

100_0035.thumb.JPG.b59c9154ea45428670a2d039cf1d894f.JPG

There has been talk of the Gamda Koor American cars before, and I may even have alluded to this, the Fire Chief Chevelle estate.  As you can see, it now represents a police car, specifically in what I believe would be the correct livery for Southport, North Carolina.  I don't know if they ever had such a wagon, but it seems reasonable.  Therefore, this livery will be appearing on other models as I see fit, to assemble a series of likely units for the Southport fleet, covering probably 30-40 years in all.  I'm already working on a 1996 Crown Vic, which will represent an actual unit: I've seen the car.

More instalments to come, because I have plenty more cars to do!  And, er... plenty more that haven't arrived yet.  Don't tell the wife!

I wouldn't even have known, perfectly happy with whatever in the box.

It'll be a week or two before I open them as my dad is currently in hospital following an operation so will be visiting him in the evenings until he gets out. Something to look forward to though.
