Just been given this by my late friend's mother.

harvardhomebase.jpg

It's a UK FM 40 channel Harvard Homebase, which is supposed to have the same chipset as an Amstrad model. It appears to work, but I have no idea where to get an antenna for it. I havent used a CB for the guts of 20 years, and have forgotten all the jargon. I seem to recall having a magnetic based aerial for my Escort, but I can only remember that my mates called the aerial a "Super Masturbator".

Any ideas where I might get an aerial chaps (and ladies)?

Cheers all

Kwolity.

I still have my old mobile unit,

in a drawer

I think PMR446 seems to have taken over these days. UK FM is very quiet

Cheers Ted. I'm gonna go full redneck, and get my girlfriend to wear Daisy Duke shorts

10/4 and all that bollocks.

It's very quiet on the old airwaves these days, years back it was jam packed and a right old laugh.

Takes me back to the days of staying up til 3 or 4.00am pissing about, chatting birds up and winding people up. Going on late night hunts for missing people who were more often than not asleep in their back garden pissed out of their head, mobbing up for raids on gangs from out of the area who'd been mouthing it off and going to shit loads of parties we weren't actually invited to.

Isn't that what the yoof of today use Facebook for? And they think they're onto something new

They don't comprehend that their activities can be traced, and there can be significant consequences - just like poor classrom behaviour leads to "unfair" consequences ;) . Personal Information 101 (or Rule No. 1 if that sounds better): once your information is out there, you're not getting it back - EVER!!! - and it can be used to trace or defraud you. This is lost on them - and many adults too :( .

Now in the old *cough* days (and it was only a handful of years ago  ), with no book of faeces, no Messenger chatroom - no traceable evidence of shenanigans, truth be told...

Nowadays any nonsense posted online can be audited, and consequences can follow from that, even if it is taken out of context :( . Truly, Happy Days "back then"! :D

I've got a box full of old CB's in the garage. Really must go through them and see what's what.

I've got several here, it was awesome back in the day (my time was late 80s, early 90s), so much fun and wind ups to be had.

That's pretty much my point. Yoof think they're onto something new, cool and safe for their GANGSTA shenanigans, and think the "oldies" didn't know shit. How wrong they are!

Roger that, the early 90s was jam packed round here with massive big antennae. There were a right few bucketmouths on the air too, and many "eyeballs" turned into fights. A fella I know met his wife on the CB, and they've been married 17 years now.

Me and a mate went to Bangor (Co. Down) to meet up with a couple of girls we'd spent weeks chatting up, and we were pretty excited about it. Alas, said girls were a pair of growlers, and neither had had a shower in years.

I used to have a hand held one back in the early 90's, it was pretty rubbish though looking back at it, I used to get the odd lorry driver driving down the A12 but nowt else, My dad was into CB's in a big way, my family surname is Carpenter, my dad's handle was Woodentop and i was known as baby woodentop.

Dad had a Mk2 Escort Estate with the big ariel on the roof and they used to do a treasure hunt where other CB users had to find thing, Apparently my mum's knickers got pinched of the washing line in one of the games...

Me & my off-roading mates have got CBs in our Landies for the indispensible piss-taking component of a day out in the hills...

Go on I'll have a reminiss -

I had a selection of CB's, though despite having a President Lincoln once over coupled to a Silver Rod, a frequency counter and a 30W burner from Tigers Cage I kept gravitating back to home brewed 80ch rigs - probably my favorite was the Amstrad 901, banded out it had all the chanels I needed and it had a lovely speaker tone the smaller Midlands couldnt match.

I dont really have the room in the Micra to fit another one, but might be tempted to lash my old rig up - i'll nip to B&D up at Forton next time Im going to the caravan and pick up a cheapo DV27 twig.

Oh, my call sign was Mr Rusty (partly because I was into the magic roundabout in an unhealthy way and partly beacuse the cars were rusty heaps of shite). I used to haunt Ch7 Muppets band from 7pm to about 1am - anyone in the NW remember Brian "Camper"?

Cobra 148 GTL-DX Mk2. 400w Zetagi burner, pre-amp, K40 on the roof of the car, sitting on top of Winter Hill or Moel Famau in the middle of the night winding people up for miles around.

Those were the days.

I used to go up Beacon Fell with my set up - silver rod clamped to the rear bumper of the Fiesta. For mobile coms I used a Moonraker. But the Silver Rod was the dogs bollocks for long distance work on the skip.

I had a Cobra 148, great rig, later I used a Kenwood TS140S amateur rig, modified to CB frequencies for even more fun.

Last CB I got to use was in a truck, and I blithely assumed it would be the same as the old analogue units I used when I used to drive tippers - dammit they were handy, and one of the guys had a singing Jack Russell which kept us amused - but could I get this infernal thing to work? Could I 'eck.

I managed to find some traffic on the run down to Newcastle, but they sounded like proper arseholes. I put it to bed after finding what appeared to be a French ham radio station.

Long story short; I like the principle of CB, but obviously my education is sadly lacking! I understand the electronic principles and so forth, but how do you actually use these things? Educate me...

My handle was Knighthawk back in the day. Even painted it in green on my handpainted black mk2 Escort KCO361P if I remember, brilliant days, many a maiden succumbed to my dulcid tones and as a fellow shiter said, many an eyeball turned black
