Yugo-t To Be Having A Laugh

Recommended Posts

As mentioned last week, I now own a Zastava Yugo 313, seemingly the only one of its type in the UK. Purchase was concluded today, with the added bonus of infuriating the entire road whilst unloading it off the trailer. Some suitably shit pictures to get the ball rolling:

So it hasn't been on the road of years, not MOT, no tax, no brakes, currently won't start and needs welding. What's the worst that could happen?

Whoosh, SRSLY impressed!

Is that mildew on the interior by the way or just a green tint to the trim?

Posted

That looks great, I can't remember the last time I saw a Yugo. :D

How bad is the corrosion? It looks pretty staight externally from the pics.

The sills are rotten and it will definitly need work before it goes back on the road. Don't expect to see it up and running by next weekend - it will need to be based around various paydays (tax and MOT on the Bluebird are due soon)

Hopefully it doesn't end up as a case of enthusiasm > talent

is that a map of UK Yugo dealers just a blank piece of paper?!

Lovely! I always loved the, dare I say, coupe-like look of these Yugos. I sat in a pea green one for sale at a garage just before I passed my driving test in the mid 90s and the salesman didn't seem to/couldn't understand that it would have been my car, what with me only being 16/17 at the time.

We didn't buy it and I ended up with an Allegro. :D

According to that map there's one in Plymouth (with the name of the district spelt incorrectly). Think I might pop down tomorrow, buy some mats and check out the latest range

Top stuff! I've had respect for these little beasts for a wee while. How will the welding be carried out - will you be doing it yourself?

Posted

THAT, is bloody marvellous! Well done! That's motoring how it should be - cool, straightforward and direct. Every mile you drive that you really will be driving it, nice and mechanical. I've just bought an S Class so have a cheek to talk, but the very basic car is an art that the European manufacturers have lost.

Enjoy!!!

Superb, that is. A sprinkle of Shake 'N' Vac is all thats needed on the interior.

I don't know how to weld but I know someone who can do it for me. So, the plan is

1) buy car

2) ?

3) MOT car

4) Drive car around LIKE A SIR

6) Profit

Whether the photos flatter it or not, that is rather tidy. Well done!

Some slightly better ones

Overall reactions have thus far been positive (including Pistonheads). Raining all today so very little done beyond clearing out the interior. It's also suffering from some sort of electrical gremlins since the indicators and blower motor are refusing to work. Some LOLZ have already been had by attempting to look up parts at Halfords, where it isn't even shown on their systems anymore

Is there a dealer mentioned for Suffolk called Baylham?

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but thought I'd mention I have found the handwritten sales records for this garage and am trawling through the entries to log anything interesting. There are a load of Yugo's with prices and reg numbers. I'll post up a summary soon.

It does look extremely miserable in a 20-years-ago kind of way. I should imagine it'll be quite engaging to drive, the Fiat 128 which was the base car was highly praised. In 1970.

Well bought sir, hope we will see it out and about soon!

A 60 SUMP ? ! Well done Negative, it's really a Fiat 128 - but I expect you already knew that.....( Ah. beat me to it, Eddy !)

tell them down at your local Halfrauds branch. There is a very knowledgeable chap in Macedonia who is a Zastava specialist,

I am hoping he will join Autoshite soon, he can answer many questions, AND supply lots of readily-available parts from there !

Yes there is - Lower Road, Baylham IP6 8JP. That's in the list dated April 1985. There's also a cut out from the TV Times 21-27 February 1987 tucked inside where it doesn't appear

Fabulous!

Apart from the 128, it shares parts with a massive number of FIATs, Ladas etc. The steering wheel (apart from the centre), gear lever and interior door handles look exactly the same as those in my dad's old A112!

This is fantastic work! Don't suppose you fancy a Sana that lives locally to me to keep it company?

Fuggin 'ell. R E S C E T P and all that.

A deeply obscure and unloved old car that nobody other than us remembers that has been off road for years. Impressive. I reckon that'll make a nice* car although I could well imagine you having to invest a small hill of money in it.

It looks in pretty good condition, hope to see it around sometime as I havent seen a Yugo in years.

I remember there was a Yugo dealer in Plymouth but I cant remember where it was!

Hi Warren - I am Editor for the Yugo Club magazine so any info on the Sana would be greatly appreciated.

I have already said previously that this 313 is an important car being the only known surviving example in the UK and even when new extremely rare. Unfortunately in Yugo circles rarity doesn't equal financial value. Nonetheless, we are extremely interested in this car and keen to keep abreast pf progress. They're not known for electrical problems so the indicators and heater fan are unlikely to be anything sinister - probably fan switch and flasher unit at an educated guess.

As correctly stated the car is basically a Fiat 128 but as someone once unkindy commented;"Yugo took the best that Fiat had to offer and spoilt it..". In short, a Yugo will never drive as well as the Fiat equivalent as it was built down to a price. I have upgraded mine by fitting Fiat 128 dampers (much firmer) and decent tyres which have totally transformed the handling. Many enthusiasts in Serbia upgrade to Fiat X19 spec which is ok I guess but not for me..!!

Rust isn't usually a huge problem - rear sills, inner arches and jacking points are generally as bad as it gets.

Keep us informed.

Seaton Avenue Nutley [sic]. It must be the buidling by the Post Office which is now a small mechanics

Good save.

Is there any chance of a scan of the Yugo dealer list so we can all go and find the remains of our local Yugo dealer?

I've recently seen a red one parked up in Hibaldstow, off the A15 and also at a Fiat specialist in Hull. I've got some pics but fook knows where they are in my computer...

Posted

I'm guessing the red car in Hibaldstow is G204PND? I used to own the car and sold it in 2005 to a Spanish guy who lives up that way. I haven't seen him with the car since the SALT rally in June 2009 but I understand he still owns it.
