In Norway there's actually a company called rent-a-wreck that does just what it says on the tin.

There used to be a place in Bradford with that exact same name, engaged in the exact same business activities.

I once rented a luton style transit from a chap in Stanley who advertised as a 'rent a wreck'. I presume it's a style of business rather than a chain :)

It had a hole in the roof, no third gear, a rotten diesel filler which required aim to get fuel in the tank, and steering that required half a turn to stay straight at 45. On the other hand, it was £25 for the day, and I was 21. Good enough for a house move then!

There's one in West Ruislip as well.

I don't know why car rental is so expensive. The buy a car at 40% fleet discount, rent it out for six months and then sell it for more than what they paid for it.

and why can you rent a car for £10 a day in Spain (off season of course)? cars are not much cheaper in Spain than here.

We had a company called Rent a Rek (actually spelt like that!) in Middlesbrough, back in the early 90s. I remember them having a mk2 Transit luton, a Transit LWB, a couple of CF2s and various rough 80s Fords, including a red rattle canned Cortina Ghia estate.

At the time, the company I was working for wanted me to drive round for a week delivering their catalogues to all their customers. They had booked the Cortina estate for me, but it expired the weekend before, so they just gave me a wad of money for fuel and I used my own Escort mk3. That little 1.1 x-flow didnt appreciate the car being loaded to the roof with catalogues... Rent a Rek, like it's cars, expired long ago!

I seem to recall a 'rent a wreck' operation here in Plymouth back in the 90's with a fleet of Lada Riva's......

There was even a short piece on them in the early '90s BBC2 documentary "A to B - tales of modern motoring". I seem to remember a family extoling the virtues of renting a Mk4/5 yellow Cortina estate (or somesuch) from them.

I'll have a root around in YouTube for it. You never know .....

O RLY?

Discount is far more like 20% as an average although obviously is more on big stuff and less on small. Also, rental cars are vat qualifying as well which helps bring the price down..

Off season is the reason. That sort of market is primarily for the tourist industry so if you've got a few hundred cars sat around in October doing nothing then £10 a day isn't bad really. Uk rental industry is very different and mainly aimed at corporate business - retail / tourist bookings are just the icing on the cake.

The vast majority of rental companies are making very little at all. Those that do make money tend to make more on disposal than actual rental unless they do much in the way of credit hire and then its £££££££S all the way to the bank.

August 1987.... I rented a Mk2 Transit Luton 2 litre petrol. With bonus Overdrive. It cost 9 of us £55 to get from Lincoln to London for the Acid Daze Festival...... The night after the night before, we were staying in a squat in the Hackney area, and woke up the next day to find a space where the van had been. Bugger. Luckily, we had paid the extra insurance. Cue 9 people thumbing a lift up the A1..... I was the first home, and had to explain to the Hire company what had happened. I took the keys in, and they told me it had been found in Leicester! All they had to do was go pick it up. They thanked me for the business. I asked about the remaining fuel in it..... I got told to fuck off. Strikes me they had taken it back themselves...... wankers. Just to prove how upset I was, I never used them again! That showed 'em.

I was going to mention that... ah, the joys of watching the teenage kids squirming and blushing in the back seat, muttering (approximately) how walking was better  ! A cracking series - I'd say the best telly of the 1990s, period - but rarely seen and sorely absent on YouTube :( .

I rented a Transit from a locally respected (and well regarded) place in north Manchester back in '96. It was 5 years old, the brakes worked when they could be bothered (driving a Mini 1000 at the time with drum brakes, it was't an unfamiliar experience  ) and the gearbox grated and clanged when changing gear on a basis I couldn't fathom (I was too busy worrying about the brakes - oh, and the noise from the exhaust - I suspect). Any Rent-A-Wreck worth their salt would not have let anyone drive that one.

The LDV hi-top I rented from them in 2002 was a sweet, dear, friendly and reliable thing in comparison!!!

They're not there now...

I went on holiday to Scotland back in about 1997 and rented a Rover Metro 1.1 from a company called 'Hire-A-Heap'. They were located near to Hearts' football stadium.

It was dirt cheap and marauded around the snow-bound highlands trouble free for an entire week. ACE.

My sister rented a car from an American rent-a-wreck place. It was pretty minging with saggy seats, odd panels, missing bits of trim. However they offered free breakdown insurance, and guaranteed that the aircon worked which is apparently all Americans care about.

That low-cost car rental place looks brilliant, shame it's a local firm for local people. There's a similar place here doing Ford Ka rental for £10/day (although to save on the cost of revinyling their cars, it's now £12 - if you point out the error, they tell you it's £10 plus VAT) but nothing bigger

I once rented a "lorry" with tail lift.

I'd stood looking around for said lorry when I went to collect it only to be taken across the road to what looked like a breakers row of old shite.

Ex-Royal Mail, absolutely worn to bits, there was a MASSIVE, probably one foot square plastic etched sign fastened to the dash telling you not to set off in 2nd gear as it would cause rapid clutch wear... if it had gone into 1st gear it might have helped this slightly.

Correct. In fact, last time I rented a car in Spain during the off-season, I certainly didn't pay a tenner a day. More like £40, and that's for a hateful Polo 1.2 and including a decent discount that I get through my MEGAPLATINUMSUPERTITANIUMEXTRAVALUEDCUSTOMER Sixt card. Of course, it was in Madrid where tourists usually don't dare to rent a car. Had it been in Malaga, I could've had change from a tenner!

From A To B: Tales of modern motoring on YouTube, for your delectation. Not the clip we were after, but the few clips are SOLID GOLD nonetheless.

The rep in the Maestro Clubman D complaining how badly he'd been treated; the other rep in the Cavalier GLi who bowed down to the SRis and CDs who were behind him and let them pass - but asserted that NO Cavalier without an i in the badge would be allowed past (the irony is strong here, later in the clip  )...

And the young lad in the Metro who drove his last car under the back of a lorry while brushing his (then-Jason Donavan style, he says) hair and applying spot cream while rushing to get to work.... "This metro's an old person's car!", said in Hovis Bread Advert tones, is something to behold.

Best TV of the 1990s - period. And I don't think much, if anything - except perhaps Auf Wiedersehen, Pet! series 3 and 4 - has touched it since :) .
